Various Powerset Soundmods

Recommended Posts

Hi, forums! First time posting here, and I've done so because I put together some mods for certain powerset sounds I disliked. That's it, really!

Downloads are in the Google Drive link below. If you have any input or ideas, or even requests for sounds to change, let me know!

DOWNLOAD (Google Drive Folder)

Update: All of these are now downloadable with CoH Modder! Neat new tool that makes installing/managing/finding mods way easier.
Update 2: Forgot to format the new packs in the same way as the others posted here. Also, one more new mod!

Update 3: Can't seem to access CoH Modder anymore. Since this post hit the size limit, I've moved to a Google Drive folder instead.

Update 4: Most of my mods have already been ported over to City Modder, the newest mod manager. But I've also added my new Arcade Street Justice mod to it!

Powerful Electricity

I've always found the electricity sounds in this game to be strange. That odd, swirling fizzy noise doesn't sound very electric, and powers like Charged Bolts just sound plain weird. So what I've done here is replace many electricity related power sounds with new ones, sampling sound effects from a great variety of sources and combining them into mostly original sounds.

The melee sfx included here still have CoH melee base sounds, since those are great IMO.

Pew-Pew Beam Rifle

Ugh... While I love the concepts of the Beam Rifle powerset, a lot of its effects are just obnoxious buzzing sounds. So I made new ones, which again combine multiple sources to create new sounds, which I think are more snappy and satisfying without all the electric bees.

Gender-Neutral Sonic Blast

I tried to make a Sonic Blast character earlier- she was a Sentinel who used special gadgets to blast music at her foes, and amplify her voice. But that Scream sound effect... GRAAH! It didn't fit at all, and irritated me so much I abandoned her. Well, with these two sound effects installed your lovely loud ladies no longer sound like extremely angry men! Using samples from other sonic powers in COH, I've created a pair of sounds that replace that manly scream with more abstract sounds, so they fit with a greater number of character concepts.

Blunt-Sounding War Mace

War Mace has a lot of weapon options that are blunt with no sharp ends- and the powerset deals no Lethal damage- but the sound effects sound pretty rip-and-tear-y! It simply doesn't fit your baseball bat, mallet or warhammer. So, I made a soundpack that changes the impact sounds to sound more blunt. Sledgehammer and Street Justice impacts were mixed and edited to create these sounds.

Heavy Hands Energy Melee

Energy Melee's sounds are alright by themselves, but something always seemed to be... lackluster about them. It doesn't help that most of the powers in the set share slight variations on the exact same impact sound.

I can't quite fix the second part, but the former is an easy fix by editing them to use the impact sounds from the melee attacks of the Resistance Heavy Hands enemies- which are considerably more SMACK-y.

Note: Energy Transfer's impact sound is shared with Super Strength. You'll need Better Super Strength Impact below to change that one.

Ambassador Dual Pistols

This is a simple pack of sounds for the Dual Pistols powerset, which mixes in the sound of Team Fortress 2's Ambassador(a big magnum revolver) into the Dual Pistols sound effects.
This firing sound is quite timbre-y, so it gives them more of an 'antique' or 'magnum' feel. This, I find, is more fitting for classic-style Pistol models, like the cowboy pistols or flintlocks.

Heavy Assault Rifle

While the vanilla rifle sounds are perfectly fine, I find that they're generally a bit too 'stock' for my taste. So I've mixed in some Call of Duty 2 weapon sound effects, and the MP5 sounds from a Black Mesa workshop mod, to give them a much-needed beeferizing. Burst, Slug, Buckshot, M30 Grenade, Sniper Rifle, and Full Auto are all modified.
Now all that's left is to wait for the devs to buff Assault Rifle, so it's as powerful as this mod makes it sound!

Satisfying Archery

I've now also made a new set of archery sound effect replacements, using sounds from the Immersive Sounds Skyrim mod, and the original game. This affects Archery, Trick Arrow, and Tactical Arrow. The new sounds are generally punchier and less 'airy'. Previously, arrows didn't have much impact at all, and the drawing sound was always a little weird to me.

Star Wars Beam Rifle

Made to a (somewhat) higher quality standard than the others, I actually bothered to pop into the testing server and polish these sounds to a mirror shine! Or at least... they would shine, if sounds could reflect light.

This pack features sounds from Star Wars, chosen to create a consistent, blaster-y overall feel for your Beam Rifle.

Better Super Strength Impact

Changes Super Strength impact sounds to have a bit more punch. The comic book "pow!" sound is intact, but I've added an extra "smack" sound, since the originals felt too light to me.

VineSPEEN

"Y'know, I could say something like, 'speen'... but I'll let you use your imagination."

This is a pair of sound mods which replace the audio for two powers - "Spin", from Claws and Arachnos Widow, and "Whirlwind", from the Speed pool.

"Spin" now has the voice of a New York jabroni streamer saying SPEEN in a silly voice, and "Whirlwind" has a looped "SPEEEeeEeeeeEeeEEeeEeE" sound, for constant vine-flavored sauce action.

"I can! I can... SPE-"

Metal Sonic Attack

Is your Sonic Attack character a real metalhead? Fight crime or do evil with these sick riffs, which replaces all the sound effects for the Sonic Attack powerset with metal guitar riffs and solos!

Arcade Street Justice

With a little filtering and sound effects from Kirby Super Star Ultra, I've beefed up the sound effects for Street Justice.
This mod replaces every Street Justice sound effect, including the swings, Combat Readiness, and Assassin's Strike.

Crumbly Stone Impacts

This mod just replaces a few sounds related to various Stone/Earth powersets which I felt didn't quite sound rocky enough.
These sounds are shared by many powers.

What folder would you drop these into? I'm on my phone, haven't opened the zip yet.

As in the readme, the "data" folder goes into the root of your COH install- the same folder as the original game executable.

Edit- If you don't have any mods(like the Vidiot map overlays), the folder will not exist until you move it in.

These are awesome!

Woild you mind telling me path to the sonic blast files in CoH? I've been hunting through the various ones labeled sounds and so far I have not come across them.

The two that I found were in "powers". I seem to have acquired an older sound folder though, since I looked in the game files and could not find some of the ones I had.

These sounds still work, which leads me to believe I just don't know where the originals are in the game files. It's odd, because I extracted all of the sounds and yet searching for some of the filenames gets me nothing.

Edit- For example, searching the extracted sounds for "chargebolt", the name of the sound file used for Charged Bolts, gets no results- but that sound is obviously still in the game. If anyone knows why this happens or where these sounds are, let me know!

Thanks for looking, at least I know I've not gone crazy or blind!

Added a new soundpack replacing War Mace impacts.

I only know of three sound files that this powerset uses that sound rip-and-tear-y, but if anyone knows of some others or notices their War Mace sounding rippy sometimes, let me know! The filenames if you can, or failing that, the power names.

When I altered "chargebolt.ogg" file with my test sound, it played the altered sound without issue.

Dislike certain sounds? Silence/Modify specific sounds. Looking for modified whole powerset sfx?

Check out Michiyo's modder or Solerverse's thread.  Got a punny character? You should share it.

You should find most if not all of them here. Let me know if there are any missing.

Now these are the kinds of modifications I was looking for!  Dear community, more of this please!  ^_^

PS: I wonder if music files can be overwritten too. Is that possible?

They can.

Base builders has a list of music files in their guide.

Thank you very much for the beam rifle sound mod. I was looking for something like this.

You're very welcome!

I know personally that the Beam Rifle powerset just doesn't sound very pleasant. The sounds are cool, but there's far too much buzzing. The rest of the game has neat laser SFX(Like the Council marksman's rifle), so I don't know why Beam Rifle is so weird.

Would love to add my recently released mod to this list - available via the COH Mod Tool

Battle Axe SFX - Titan Overhaul

This mod replaces the Battle Axe 'hit' sound effects with custom mixed SFX from the Titan Weapons and War Mace power line to give a more powerful and "crunchier" feel to Battle Axe. The "woosh" sound effects used for swinging your weapons have been changed by mixing various wooshes and reducing the pitch
