And just how easy is it for most people (who don't have advanced computer skills) to do this?
-
Amazon can, and has, erased books off of Kindles before. And they've even done it without informing the owners. And how long until your books get rewritten by the adherents of "Current Year Ideology"? How long before you're forced to watch ads on your Kindle? How long will you be able to read your Kindle beside the fireplace when the power's been out for 3 days? My books ignore ALL of those problems.

Any IP holder, not just Marvel or DC, can sue for infringing on their copyright or trademark. So Yes, a Neo knock of character is at risk for being genericed.

Redside... Best side? Right??
PeregrineFalcon replied to Dev Unitas's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Ok, so first the idea that "no one really wants to be evil" is contradicted by the popularity of Grand Theft Auto, where the players run around stealing and murderizing people all day long. Secondly, the problem with Villainside isn't that it's too evil or not evil enough, it's that players aren't allowed to play the part of a comic book villain. They have no agency, the missions mostly aren't any different from heroside in that you spend a lot of time defeating other villains instead of fighting heroes, and players can't even do low level thug stuff like beat up a civilian and steal his car. If the developers really wanted to fix this they'd have to come up with a couple of different villain goals (build a secret base, conquer the world, summon an elder deity who shall remain unnamed for trademark reasons into the world, some other specific goal) and then set up a contact to allow a player to pick one of these goals per character. The character would then get a 5 - 50 story arc that goes thru these goals and is written in such a way that the player, not the NPC, appears to be making the decisions and selecting targets. In other words: allowing the player to play a comic book villain. That's what players wanted, they didn't get that, so villainside is dead. Also, I completely agree with what you said about SWTOR. But I won't go into detail as I don't want to sidetrack this thread. -
Pretty much nothing that you've written here is correct. Targeting enemies is easy in this game. You may wish to rebind certain keys to your liking, but it's an option. You want the game to target the enemies for you, zoom your camera out for you, move up to the enemies for you, do you want the game to press the attack keys for you too? Your Scrapper is a foot too far away from an enemy and you can't hit them? Let me give you a pro tip; tap 'W'. Reading your post it sounds to me like you want the ability to get this game to play itself. May I recommend Progress Quest?

It's not intended as a gotcha statement at all. If anything I am making your point about context. The reason that no one was upset about Samuel L Jackson playing Nick Fury is because people understood that he wasn't being picked to push "Current Year Ideology", he was picked because he has the right attitude and charisma to play Nick Fury. And people were ok with that because movie and comic fans ARE NOT evil racists despite what adherents to "Current Year Ideology" would have you believe. Just as you said, context matters. The problem is that adherents to "Current Year Ideology" seem to want to destroy our favorite characters and stories instead of create their own. And when fans of the original characters and stories complain about it, and refuse to buy tickets to those movies, they're accused of being an entire list of -ists and -phobs. Everyone knows it isn't true, but they keep saying it anyway because they're pushing "The Message." People have voted with the wallets and the message is crystal clear: "Stop pushing The Message and make entertaining movies or keep losing money at the box office."

Well now, this is interesting:
-
You are correct. Can you tell me why no one had a problem with Samuel L Jackson being cast as Nick Fury?

There's a reason why you can use google to see a ton of memes like this one. And it isn't because a handful of people on this forum are imagining this. It's because millions of people around the world have noticed this phenomenon.

*crickets* Yeah, that's what I figured. Ok, well here's a video that sums up what I think of Madame Web:

Sorry, I was at work and misremembered the correct name of the option that I'm talking about: So I have the option for either "Show" or "Hidden." My main on Torchbearer has this as "Show when selected." This means that I can see my name and title when a teammate that I'm targeting targets me. I do have this option on a couple of other characters but, if I click it at all then I lose the ability to pick "Show when selected" and it only allows me to pick "Show" or "Hidden."

Ya know, I really hate this whole dead horse meme thing. Just because you talked about an issue and settled it in your mind back in 2004 doesn't mean that others have. Other people didn't play CoH then. Some people weren't even on the internet then. My son who is in the Marines today was born in 2004. I can assure you that he didn't participate in the discussion back in 2004/2005. Bottom line: if you're tired of a discussion then feel free to see yourself out of the thread. Door's over there. But unless you're going to log in to your moderator account and lock the thread, then please don't try to tell us whether or not we're allowed to continue discussing what you see as a "dead horse" topic.

Ok. So you're completely fine with Charlton Heston playing Moses then, right? And you'd be ok with Ryan Gosling playing Black Panther? If not then why not?
-
So you're saying that "It's ok to change characters and rewrite history and do other bad things because of stuff that happened 70 years ago." I thought the entire point behind being progressive was to not repeat the mistakes or bad actions of the past. "It's ok when we do it!" Right?
-
BTW, can we get "Show when selected or on mouse over" added back as an option to "Player Name"? This used to be an option. I know because my main on Torchbearer still has this selected and I can see her name and title whenever someone I'm targeting targets my character. However, this option has disappeared so I do not have this ability on any other character.

Your best bet is to just remove general chat from the chat window altogether. And, speaking from personal experience, you won't get any help here on the forums. The woke don't police their own.
-
And here I was going to tell everyone the story about how I played your mom. But now you've gone and given everyone the wrong idea. 😁
-
I wouldn't get too worked up about it. I've played a couple of moms before, it's not as great as it sounds.

Well, according to a GM in a thread on this forum a few years ago, you'd be fine. So if an SG predates a copyright filing is fine, then a character should be as well. .

Don't give me that "I'm old school so I don't air my grievances" nonsense. As a kid in the 70's I heard my grandparents, born in the 20's, talk to other people their age and complain about stuff. So please don't act "old school" means you don't ever complain about anything. And if you think that this isn't the appropriate place to talk about stuff then I think you don't understand the entire point behind an online forum.

The movie industry is the only industry that I'm aware of where it's considered acceptable to make a garbage product, have your employees insult your customers on Twitter, and then blame the customers when they refuse to spend money on said product. Think about it this way, in the 80s, when people started buying American cars less and foreign cars more, American automakers didn't publicly chastise Americans. Instead they decided to start making better cars in order to get Americans to start buying their cars again. A couple of years ago, in response to my children not believing me when I grumbled that movies used to be better, I showed them "12 Angry Men." Not the remake, the black-and-white version. For those that don't know there's no special effects and no action of any kind. It's just 12 guys in one room talking. That's the whole movie. These energetic teenagers were riveted. Afterward I said to them "Now imagine if today's movies had those same special effects but with that quality of writing." They both said to me "Ok, now I see why you complain about modern movies." TL;DR: Make a better product and stop blaming your customers. You aren't entitled to our money.

Yeah, it's actually pretty impressive when you realize that Cryptic shut down their AE (the Foundry) entirely in both Star Trek Online and Neverwinter (two games that use basically the same engine) because it was too difficult for them to keep with all of the changes that kept breaking their version of the AE. 😁
