  1. Well, this post isn't exactly about that, it was about saving items, even up to a whole base. Honestly? I think they could make premade bases or rooms available. I'd very much LIKE for them to do this. I'd like to have an assortment of styles in a basic base, even a basic apartment base, which many people want. I'd even be willing to create the models. I see these as being available as choices in the editor; maybe they come complete with automated item count so you can't cheat and make the base editor hold more than it should hold, but I would think it's doable, from what I've been told by people with programming skills. Now, the team here has said that copying bases and re-inserting them on a different server is something not yet automated (and so, they do not offer it because it would tie up man hour resources), but as we can copy our characters and all of their various attachments to another server, it seems logical that we should be able to do so with bases, but the devs would need to want to put the time in to make that happen. With a volunteer team, the focus on what they spend their time on tends to mean that they will work on those things they themselves are most interested in and want to see, and unfortunately, as far as I know and as evidenced by the time spent on base development, none of the current devs seem to have much interest in bases, so I do not have a lot of hope that this idea will go anywhere. BUT. Sometimes they surprise us. 🙂
  2. And, Entries are officially closed, and judging will conclude on Sunday, June 30 with awards!
  3. It's not a dumb question 🙂 You cannot rotate the entry, so you need to rotate the BASE. Build with the knowledge that you will enter the base facing south every single time. This video will tell you all you need to know to get started on the right foot.
  4. You can't, currently, resize the entry room itself. What you can do is, use doorways to open the room up (excepting the corners) into other areas. Or, move the portal elsewhere and put the entry off to the end of the plot and just use larger rooms if you prefer.
  5. Everything you need to know to build a basic base, step by step.
  6. This should help if you want to hide them:
  7. You know, tho, I once thought that they couldn't do anything about shift. And then they surprised us all and essentially got RID OF IT. The code has been unlocked. It's still touchy, mind, and it's still a 20 year old game on the original engine afaik, but...I'm super impressed with what they've been able to get out of it. 🙂 We'll see how far it goes!
  8. Certainly, being able to group items so that they can be moved as one piece would be awesome, I agree! However, what I see there is a well equipped base design interface, very easy to use, but very limited in what it can do creatively. This, as I've said before, is the trade. Now, if we could get grouping and more basic household items, and maybe some pre made rooms for those that don't want to create, they just want a base, I'd be happy with that, and I'm sure the majority would be, too. But if you take away our ability to meld items and create new things, then we are dependent on what's in the editor to fulfill our visions, and, having recently TRIED to categorize the extreme creativity that has been unleashed in the base building community through the new directory, I will tell you, we'd lose SO much. The list of categories (and no way we got them all) is daunting. The creativity here is amazing. Take a few moments sometime to read the bios of characters as they go by. Peruse the descriptions in the directory. There are some wildly inventive story artists out there! Yes, we have apartments, mansions, and houses. We also have quite a few that "defy description". Everything from prehistoric to futuristic, realistic to tech to magical to interdimensional. We even have interactive bases with slides, or swimming, or rides and games. I have not played the game you have, but I do know that the more a system does FOR you, the more limited you are in what you can do with the system. We have modern houses, castles, cyberpunk, arcane, aquatic...what's the variety like in just the houses you can create? The furniture, there? Or does everything have that "cartoonish" look I see in your picture? There is nothing against a system like that, lots of people will enjoy it, and that's awesome. However, I am just saying, there is a lot we would give up if we went with something like that, and I, for one, would hate that.
  9. Heh, the person who wrote the code did not last long, and in fact, it was so bad, the original team didn't TOUCH the editor again. Once you learn the controls, it gets easier, at least, it seems that way for most. I think if you enjoy creating things, the editor is a bit of a learning curve, but it won't slow you down for long. If you're not really into making things and just want a base, dang it, it's cumbersome and extra annoying. We creative types will take the trade that's made of automation for flexibility, every time. In other words, the editor won't do a lot for you, but you can do a lot with it (once you learn the system). It's really surprising what we can do with it, especially now, but base building (sadly) was never a primary goal in this game, and so it was never a focal point in development. So it's never going to be like Sims or other games that prioritize building, but honestly, if you learn the commands, it WILL get easier as you work with it. I agree, the arcane beacons are very unclear, but I almost always bury mine in the floor and use words or symbols to show where a teleporter goes, so, doing things that way, it makes no difference what the beacons look like. If you want to display the beacons, you can always use the tiny alphabet letters and write the destination on the beacon. And I think without ctrl/z, a LOT of us would be throwing things. 🙂
  10. can always bind a couple of keys
  11. That's so cute! Love the flying ship, too. Maybe you can show it off in a Showcase; likely it will fit "Other", unless you want me to retro add it to tech (it seems to have a mix, so "other" would prolly be best). WIP (work in progress) is welcome in a showcase, it's not competitive. But, it would have to be listed in the directory (which also supports listing as a WIP). That's so people can find it and see what it's about! (Someone may be looking for a base just like yours!) Since great builds can be found on all the shards, the directory is a way we can connect the community, and also, make sure people can find our bases. 🙂
  12. Great motorcycle! Rest of base too, of course, but I really appreciate created items 🙂 I hope you've entered this, or will, in the directory! 🙂
  13. Add to this: <esc> to let go of something like you never grabbed it. Especially handy for storage, because there is no undo for that. Hold control to keep things on the same level/height they are currently while moving an item. Hold shift when tabbing to select the item behind the item you're clicking on. Put your character near the item you wish to select and hit tab, will usually select that item within a few tabs. Hold control when you want to select the base section, not the items in front of them. Get rid of flicker by disabling anglesnap, then angling the offending piece on the shortest or least noticeable direction possible, for the smallest amount of movement possible (it usually will move the item twice as far as the minimum, on the first try, so keep that in mind). Surface tiles are a great tool for building on multiple levels, or for placing items at a particular height repeatedly. Surface towers are all seen as one big floor by the editor, so you can put things at whatever height you wish with a tower, then use control to move it over to where you want to have it stay. Glass Windows don't make anything disappear. Glass dividers, sometimes do. And they have stripes, where glass windows do not.
  14. Hi, welcome to HC's City of Heroes/Villains, where base building can mean infinite possibilities. You don't even have to use the entry room as the entry room. Make new rooms. Build above or below the rooms. Open up the rooms and the sky and disguise the outer walls. Build several levels inside the base. Or make the base look nothing at all like how it started. The bad news on that score is, it's not an automated system that will do it for you, and there aren't panels or pieces that automatically insert a reasonably sized door into the path a "door" makes by blocking off the rest of the opening, you'd have to build that, and there aren't any pieces that automatically match the textures and styles the base itself has. In the pinned topics in Base Building here, you will find This has print and video resources for you. I recommend using whichever works best for the way you absorb information. There's an in game Base Building channel you can join from Options while in edit mode in a base, or /chanjoin Base Building in game, and there's a Base Builder's Discord, see my signature for a link to that. I'd suggest you look through some bases in the directory, or better yet, stroll through a few in the Arcane/Fantasy Showcase going on currently, to see some of what's possible. (The Tech options are still up from the last showcase, as well). To get those codes, visit one of the Tour Hubs: Everlasting: TOUR-33691 Excelsior: TOUR-30788 Indomitable: TOUR-11167 Reunion: TOUR-9105 Torchbearer: TOUR-14480 If you'd like to build a basic storage base and learn the controls and such for the basics, you might try this video: https://youtu.be/yIJNMblvA8s If you're looking to do something more grand, there are lots of other videos as well, and there are some tours.
  15. And...this is why I've done so many videos.
  16. We are live with the Showcase!! Check out the Tour Hubs for a list of all the bases: Everlasting: TOUR-33691 Excelsior: TOUR-30788 Indomitable: TOUR-11167 Reunion: TOUR-9105 Torchbearer: TOUR-14480 Tour hubs have macros to help with base hopping from inside of one base onto the next! (Note: if you already made the macro last time, there is new information to automatically set visscale! Edit it to add the new information, please!) And please, don't forget to make a comment! Lots of the bases from last tour got comments in the directory, so keep an eye on the guestbook.
  17. Entering for owner @creagcridhe INFINITEOCEAN-33196 WIP, flight helpful or even needed STEPSTONES-33464 EVIL-33918 WIP
  18. @DawL ! Look what you inspired. @Easter Bunny and @Matsiyan spent all afternoon revamping the front page to make it easier to navigate. I think it looks terrific! The tabs are all still at the bottom, too, but these links are easier to see.
  19. So...I'm a bit confused. Should I note that flight is helpful on the hub listing, or not?
  20. Okay, problem solved 🙂 Sometimes it's hard to see that there are tabs at the bottom of the page for the different servers and bases and the guestbook, one tab just for looking up a specific base...it's all there, but if you can't see it because your toolbar is covering it, kind of hard to find if you're not familiar with it. So, note to all, check the tabs at the very bottom of the window on the directory. Thanks!
  21. DM'ing you DawL, to figure out the problem
  22. You might want to put up a sign to that effect in the entry 🙂 I know you're good at thematic signs!
  23. Thanks, Sp3ctr4l! So...could you please add more info to the Excelsior directory listing, it's very bare bones, and the Reunion listing doesn't have the whole sg name. Which, I can correct if that's the only thing, but I thought maybe you'd want to check to make sure that the listings say what you want them to say? There's a tab where you can look up your base to see what it already says. Thanks so much!!
  24. THAT is an AWESOME MAP!
  25. Another Showcase! Non-competitive, all welcome, including past winners. If your base fits the theme, please let people see it! WIP (work in progress) also encouraged to enter. Dates: May 11-May26 Entered bases must also be listed in the directory, so people can find more information on them, and plus, so they can find them later, and make comments on them if they wish. Please make sure your base is listed according to your wishes in the directory. Enter bases with this format, please: Server/Shard: Base Name: Code: Builder Global In Game (Or the global you'd like comments sent to): Other players, either partner builders or owners: Special considerations: "Fly is helpful", "WIP", or list the consideration needed As before, and especially if you are in the showcase yourself, please visit bases, PLEASE send builders comments, we all like to hear things about the base we've worked so hard on. Please keep in mind, base builder abilities vary, but everyone has put a lot into their work. Tour hubs have been set up for your convenience. All the codes are listed, along with macros to help hop from base to base, and the hubs also list the builder globals to send comments to. It's recommended that exhibitors put up a sign that reminds people you would like to hear from them, and where they should send any comments on the base.
