Announcing the next Base Showcase! Again, there is no criteria for posting a base here; you don't need to have a base that is "at a certain level", has been "judged worthy" or even, is completed! Just showing off what we got. If your base fits in the Nature category (mostly natural setting) or the Other category (a mix of things, or a base that did not fit well in other categories), please post it here! Looking for bases on all the shards, please!! Format: Base Code: (Base name if you like, but it won't be listed in the Tour Hub) Globals: (builder, owner, whomever you'd like to get any comments/credit) Shard (aka server): Special Considerations: (is it a Work in Progress? Would it be nice to have fly in this base, to get around better? Did it win an award?) You might have a sign up in the base to ask people/remind people to please send comments to @yourglobal. And that's all! Thanks!!

Zac's idea is good; you could add some swirling debris from fx as well to give it more of a tornado feel. I'd also go thru all the fx to see if any appeal to your particular aesthetics more. Directional fogcan work well....this was done by another player.

And yes, Everlasting is getting full in the Hub, but, I have plans on how to add more if need be, so please don't let that stop you from listing! -

Life-Like/Realistic Showcase Listing for July 13-28
Dacy replied to Dacy's topic in Base Construction
Wravis, with your permission, I would rather hold this back for next month's Showcase, Nature/Other? Since it's pure nature. I'm not putting it in the Tour hubs yet, pending your response. Please feel free to choose the next appropriate base for you to show off. 🙂 -

I hope that people who are visiting bases will visit both of the servers (or all, if more show up...). There are wonderful bases everywhere! -

Actually, you can change a base name. Petition the GMs and you can rename it whatever you wish! -

It's time for our next Showcase! Life-Like is the next category, and we expect it to be BIG. We're looking for realistic/part of life types of bases and works in progress: things like apartments, houses, places you'd visit in the real world. Not naturescapes, because that category is NEXT month, along with "Other", which should catch those bases that just didn't fit well in other categories, or, had multiple categories in the base. Count teleporters that function as doors or elevators as realistic, given the limitations we have in this editor. Please list the base this way: Shard: Base Code: Builder or Owner: (Include builder's global and anyone else who might like to get comments, such as an owner or co-builder.) Special Considerations: Is this a WIP? (Work in Progress) Should people have flight to see or navigate in this? Did it win any awards?) Reminder: to enter the showcase, we'd like to see the bases listed in the Directory, please. Please update or enter your base if you have not yet done so (code can be "DM owner" or something similar if you'd like the base to be private outside of the Showcase, but the Directory helps others know the base exists). Let's see those bases! We have people who have been eagerly waiting for this category to appear! Thank you!

My go to is the bottoms of shower floors, on a 1/4 grid, they lay perfectly without overlap. If conserving pieces, a substation foundation, but I don't really like it.
-
There is an all inclusive directory, searchable, meant to consolidate all the directories so that you know where to find things. Please be sure that you post any bases you wish to have listed, there as well. 🙂 (see my sig for link!)

Congratulations to all the builders, and we're glad you entered your work! All the floats were great!

Well, this post isn't exactly about that, it was about saving items, even up to a whole base. Honestly? I think they could make premade bases or rooms available. I'd very much LIKE for them to do this. I'd like to have an assortment of styles in a basic base, even a basic apartment base, which many people want. I'd even be willing to create the models. I see these as being available as choices in the editor; maybe they come complete with automated item count so you can't cheat and make the base editor hold more than it should hold, but I would think it's doable, from what I've been told by people with programming skills. Now, the team here has said that copying bases and re-inserting them on a different server is something not yet automated (and so, they do not offer it because it would tie up man hour resources), but as we can copy our characters and all of their various attachments to another server, it seems logical that we should be able to do so with bases, but the devs would need to want to put the time in to make that happen. With a volunteer team, the focus on what they spend their time on tends to mean that they will work on those things they themselves are most interested in and want to see, and unfortunately, as far as I know and as evidenced by the time spent on base development, none of the current devs seem to have much interest in bases, so I do not have a lot of hope that this idea will go anywhere. BUT. Sometimes they surprise us. 🙂

And, Entries are officially closed, and judging will conclude on Sunday, June 30 with awards!
-
It's not a dumb question 🙂 You cannot rotate the entry, so you need to rotate the BASE. Build with the knowledge that you will enter the base facing south every single time. This video will tell you all you need to know to get started on the right foot.
-
You can't, currently, resize the entry room itself. What you can do is, use doorways to open the room up (excepting the corners) into other areas. Or, move the portal elsewhere and put the entry off to the end of the plot and just use larger rooms if you prefer.

This should help if you want to hide them:

You know, tho, I once thought that they couldn't do anything about shift. And then they surprised us all and essentially got RID OF IT. The code has been unlocked. It's still touchy, mind, and it's still a 20 year old game on the original engine afaik, but...I'm super impressed with what they've been able to get out of it. 🙂 We'll see how far it goes!

Certainly, being able to group items so that they can be moved as one piece would be awesome, I agree! However, what I see there is a well equipped base design interface, very easy to use, but very limited in what it can do creatively. This, as I've said before, is the trade. Now, if we could get grouping and more basic household items, and maybe some pre made rooms for those that don't want to create, they just want a base, I'd be happy with that, and I'm sure the majority would be, too. But if you take away our ability to meld items and create new things, then we are dependent on what's in the editor to fulfill our visions, and, having recently TRIED to categorize the extreme creativity that has been unleashed in the base building community through the new directory, I will tell you, we'd lose SO much. The list of categories (and no way we got them all) is daunting. The creativity here is amazing. Take a few moments sometime to read the bios of characters as they go by. Peruse the descriptions in the directory. There are some wildly inventive story artists out there! Yes, we have apartments, mansions, and houses. We also have quite a few that "defy description". Everything from prehistoric to futuristic, realistic to tech to magical to interdimensional. We even have interactive bases with slides, or swimming, or rides and games. I have not played the game you have, but I do know that the more a system does FOR you, the more limited you are in what you can do with the system. We have modern houses, castles, cyberpunk, arcane, aquatic...what's the variety like in just the houses you can create? The furniture, there? Or does everything have that "cartoonish" look I see in your picture? There is nothing against a system like that, lots of people will enjoy it, and that's awesome. However, I am just saying, there is a lot we would give up if we went with something like that, and I, for one, would hate that.

Heh, the person who wrote the code did not last long, and in fact, it was so bad, the original team didn't TOUCH the editor again. Once you learn the controls, it gets easier, at least, it seems that way for most. I think if you enjoy creating things, the editor is a bit of a learning curve, but it won't slow you down for long. If you're not really into making things and just want a base, dang it, it's cumbersome and extra annoying. We creative types will take the trade that's made of automation for flexibility, every time. In other words, the editor won't do a lot for you, but you can do a lot with it (once you learn the system). It's really surprising what we can do with it, especially now, but base building (sadly) was never a primary goal in this game, and so it was never a focal point in development. So it's never going to be like Sims or other games that prioritize building, but honestly, if you learn the commands, it WILL get easier as you work with it. I agree, the arcane beacons are very unclear, but I almost always bury mine in the floor and use words or symbols to show where a teleporter goes, so, doing things that way, it makes no difference what the beacons look like. If you want to display the beacons, you can always use the tiny alphabet letters and write the destination on the beacon. And I think without ctrl/z, a LOT of us would be throwing things. 🙂

That's so cute! Love the flying ship, too. Maybe you can show it off in a Showcase; likely it will fit "Other", unless you want me to retro add it to tech (it seems to have a mix, so "other" would prolly be best). WIP (work in progress) is welcome in a showcase, it's not competitive. But, it would have to be listed in the directory (which also supports listing as a WIP). That's so people can find it and see what it's about! (Someone may be looking for a base just like yours!) Since great builds can be found on all the shards, the directory is a way we can connect the community, and also, make sure people can find our bases. 🙂
