A lot of changes have improved the set. It’s not top tier by any means, I’d say it’s best gimmick is the insane amount of burst damage you can do with Burn -> Energy Transfer -> Total Focus. The ATO sets, the ease of access for top tier IOs, the damage modifier increase and AoE/Aggro cap increase make this set feel wonderful. I have a “guide” in the works for Fire/Energy, it should be posted later today.
-
The difference between FE and BU though is FE is more like proc damage. The damage bonus you get is directly related to how much initial damage you do. That’s why a power like Knockout Blow, Total Focus, Energy Transfer, etc receive the most benefit. Since they’re base damage is huge, they get a large chuck of extra damage as fire damage. FE will even push you PAST the damage cap as well. I’ve seen my Energy Transfers extra fire damage hit for 400+ on the regular at +4 and at +0 a fully self buffed Energy Transfer can deal over 1k sometimes.
-
I had 8 for the longest time on my Fire Tank. Found myself getting KBd in the final fight on the ITF so I went to 12. No more KB from what I’ve noticed on the ITF (unless I got lucky) but I am still getting flopped around by Lord Recluse.

Fire/Energy is a blast and a +1 for nostalgia. It might not be obvious to pair it with Fire Armor but it has a synergy I think is often overlooked. That being Fiery Embrace and how it’s damage bonus is a % of the damage dealt by your attacks. Since Energy Transfer and Total Focus have such a huge base damage, they coincidentally get HUGE damage increases when buffed by Build Up & Guassains Proc + Fiery Embrace. Solo I could hit mobs for 1k+ with ET and TF both. On teams I’ve seen over 3k damage at +2 with a Kinetics on the team and several debuffers. Another thing to note is that if you have enough +recharge from your build and teammates, you can run an attack chain of Burn -> Energy Transfer -> Total Focus with only fractions of a second between another full cycle, just enough time to use Taunt and some other powers.

Definitely go on test. Dark Armor is your go to for primary as far as control. Dark/Stone, Dark/Ice, Dark/Psi (hello Confuse, Disorient AND Hold? Hmm...) Dark/Elec, Dark/Energy all being top contenders for control. Any Targeted AoE can get KD in Ragnarok, an Immobilize in the Winter ATO set and then various other procs depending on what you have. What this means is that you can slot a chance for Hold proc AND a chance to disorient proc in a power like Electrifying Fences from the Mu Mastery. This opens up a ton of options.
-
I didn’t do a lot of testing. But both sides are beneficial in their own right. You get more damage with the chance for + mag and Psi proc tree. But I swear I noticed more control with the other. I went with the tree that didn’t add damage if I remember. As I wanted as much confuse, disorient and immobilize going out as possible.
-
I made a Ice/Dark/Leviathan Scraptroller and it was very effective. Ice Patch, Frozen Aura, KD proc in Death Shroud, Cloak of Fear, Oppressive Gloom, Water Spout with Immobilize/Disorient Procs... more disorient and immobilize procs and then the Control Hybrid that adds more stun, immob, etc. It was very effective. Ran a lot of +4x8 content safely.
-
I’m also of the mindset where, outside of farming, why would anyone roll a Brute? Don’t get me wrong.. I love Brutes. But in general PvE gameplay, a Tank will be more survivable AND able to dish out similar damage while having a slight edge in AoE. And if you just wanted to focus on damage then a Scrapper is the superior option. Just an opinion though.
-
I just recently rolled a Fire/Energy Tank and it’s been nothing but smooth sailing so far. He was an absolute monster in the TF Commander TFs being the highest DPS more often than not and also being practically invulnerable. Being able to use Burn (and many other amazing powers across other defensive sets) before level 20 is a game changer and exclusive to Tanks. The higher target cap and wider radius means you can carelessly throw out AoEs and still hit mobs despite bad positioning. This is my first Tank since the big changes and they are well received, as you can still make an invincible Tank meant purely for defense, or you can go for offense with sets like Bio, Fire and Shield and deal great damage. Pair those sets with any high damage secondary and you have an AoE burst machine that can hit more targets than anyone.
-
Definitely, with the melee core added into the cycle you could further increase the duration of God mode. I opted for a more offensive approach as I thought my defenses were good enough.
-
The thread I linked has a Energy/Energy build that incorporates Hasten alongside a Power Boosted/Clarion buffed Unleash Potential and Force of Nature. With Hasten, good global recharge and multiple Force Feedback procs you can have several minutes of insane defense and resists, while also keeping an equal uptime to downtime ratio. It’s a bit different, instead of a static soft-cap defense or resist to 1 or 2 damage types permanently, you instead get frequent moments in time where you are beyond soft-capped defenses and at the resistance cap to almost all damage.
-
I second going Stone Mastery, not only is it thematic, but the tools it grants you are great.
-
It’s been said many times before, but thank you, from all of us. I’ve played many a game in my 27 years and nothing has ever given me the experience CoH does. This game means so much to so many and we are so grateful! Much love, Caz
-
I see it as more of a novelty than anything. In its current form, even in the perfect power the protection is underwhelming. I use that ATO set for the fantastic set bonuses it offers and almost entirely for that reason.
-
This particular power set will yield better results on a Defender. The -resistance values are superior by a large margin and will outweigh the benefits of having higher damage values.
-
Dark/Dark/Soul is quite good. /Dark Affinity has almost every tool you’d need and can be paired with every single Controller primary and be very good. You can soft-cap your defenses to all positions with Fade buffed by the Clarion incarnate that grants +special (which will also buff your controls, heals, and -tohit debuffs), Soul Absorption can be made perma and can get you and your team to incredible levels of +regeneration/+recovery, Howling Twilight is an auto-hit stun that also has a resurrection and -regeneration (500%) component, and you also get another pet in Dark Servant. All of that combined with your other tools make for a secondary that can complete any primary. Mind being the least synergistic of them but still great.
-
/Fire would still be best as it has the most AoE. Even with its non-synergy with Dark Blast being more cone focused.
-
I’d say Energizing Circuit is your most important power behind your circuit power that grants absorb, I would recommend a minimum of 3-4 slots to maximize its endurance mod, endurance reduction and recharge. This will patch up your end problems entirely and help tremendously on teams. On an MM you can get away with 1-slotting certain powers in EA, but all the other ATs benefit from multiple slots in powers like Defibrillate, Empowering Circuit and Galvanic Sentinel. I 4-slotted Defibrillate on my Elec/Elec Controller and it can drain mobs entirely. YMMV though.
-
I’ve had success with slotting the chance for build up proc in Empowering Circuit. With enough stacks and teammates it activates essentially every time.
-
Not seeing any love for Mental Manipulation. I have a former Fortunata Operative themed character named..... Un-Fortunata, total cyberpunk theme with a costume inspired by Trinity from The Matrix. Had a lot of fun nuking mobs with Ion + instant cast Hail of Bullets for what might be the best ‘burst’ in the game. Ion has a delay that practically matches the activation for Hail of Bullets, so when the damage for Ion hits you are doing damage with your nuke at the same time.

I posted my intended build for Energy/Energy in this thread. I have never leveled a Energy/ or /Energy of any kind to 50. Since both are iconic sets I wanted to do something special with it and fiddled around with the idea of rotating two “T9” defensive abilities in Unleash Potential(UP) and Force of Nature(FoN). Clarion + Power Boost buffs UP to over 30% defense to all and FoN makes you capped to almost all damage except Psionic. UP lasts 60 seconds and FoN lasts 120 seconds. With enough Force Feedback +recharge procs you can reduce the cool down for those powers and cycle between them. You can activate UP->FoN->UP as each previous power ends for 4 minutes of God mode, making sure to use Power Boost and Clarion before using UP. Once that initial cycle ends you only have to wait around two minutes to rinse and repeat. As soon as I find the time I’m going to make this on live and tweak it. I’m confident this build is good, just have to find out how good.

Here's a build I think I would run if I made this Blaster. Defenses aren't great, but the damage is pretty ridiculous. Proud of my slotting on Cauterizing Aura, Acc, Dmg, Heal and End Mod are all above 80% with some in the red values! Every Attack has a damage proc outside of Cauterizing Aura, Hot Feet and Explosive Blast, the latter of the two having utility procs in knockdown and +recharge. Ring of Fire, Fire Sword and Sniper Blast round out your ST attack chain with the occasional Power Bolt needed for lower levels. AoE is stupid good, I would probably open up with Bonfire + Energy Torrent to knock down the entire mob and begin getting +recharge procs to get your long recharge AoEs off cooldown. Then Nova + Burn + Fire Sword Circle. At this point, the entire mob is probably dead (lets be real, it is dead), BUT, if they aren't, thrown in an Explosive Blast and get even more recharge and rinse and repeat. The whole time that AoE rotation is happening, Cauterizing Aura and Hot Feet are dishing out 100's of damage. Whew... Things will literally melt and flop around like sautéed onions. I went with Sorcery for Rune of Protection to round out some resistance and mez protection. Has a considerable amount of uptime with all the +recharge procs going off. This is what I came up with. I do plan to build this soon, either before I make a /Energy Dominator or after. I can make you a build when I get some free time. I’m not sure if I’ve made one in Mids but it’s a really great build. It’d be nice to have one in the archives!
-
Why not both! I haven’t made it yet on live, but the build I made in Mids has Unleash Potential from the power pools and Force of Nature from the Force epic! Unleash Potential buffed by Power Boost and the +special Clarion gives you a ridiculous amount of defense, 35%ish to ALL if I remember correctly. Force of Nature essentially caps your resistance to all damage except Psi. With a decent amount of Force Feedback +recharge procs going off from your Energy primary, you can have something like a 60-75% uptime with those two powers. Which means that 60-75% of the time you have soft-cap defenses to all damage and capped resistance to most damage. I’m really excited to make it as I’ve never gotten an Energy Blast character past level 8 or something.
