Alternate "general" channel?

I'm so interested in a "general" chat that has some rules.  The default general added by the Homecoming team is becoming hot trash.  I'm trying to play this game as an escape, but it's constantly flooded negativity of various flavors.  I'm looking for a more moderated chat channel that doesn't allow talk of politics, religion, and other controversial topics.  I'd like to just be able to dish about fun pop culture stuff and the game, basically.

 

Does a channel like that exist already?  If no, is there interest in making one?

 

I'm more of a follower than a leader, tbh, so I really don't know how I'd go about starting something like that and maintaining it is very intimidating to me.

Aint gonna happen although this is the best community chat wise in-game I've ever been (have seriously played every major/minor mmo out thar) a part of it just aint gonna happen human/super hero/fantasy/robot nature lol. My suggestion is combine general/help/ and whatever other social tab you might have and the devs can call it "Generic Social Channel". Just sayin' but just sayin' lol I don't follow them on my char's I did at first but yeah that stopped real quick but that's just me sayin' lol (JMS is the new IMHO lol).

Global chat channels are a thing already, and if someone makes one(or has made) and makes the rules part of the MOTD it absolutely can happen.  General chat this morning is ranging from homophobia, xenophobia, abortions, and plenty of other toxic topics.  the world is a shitty enough place right now without bringing stuff like that into my leisure time.  Leaving general chat has now become part of making a new character because of how awful it is.  But there's not a better option for talking about off-topic things like comic books, movies, tv shows etc.  

 

Adding general chat as a global default channel has made the game worse.

Even before default global General very very very few people used global channels to chat.  Your wish/thought will never come true.

Go check out how many different global channels there are for Excelsior alone

The addition of the General channel is the best thing ever because it cleaned up all the other channels.  It basically separates all that junk into one convenient channel that I can ignore.  Then I removed General from my chat options and saved it to the default chat.txt file, so I never have to see it again on new chars.  Everybody wins!

Yep.  One of the very first things I did back on April 24th, 2019 was to remove the Help channel from my chat tabs, and then saved it to the default chat file.  The very first thing I did when Page 5 went live was to remove the General channel from my chat tabs, and saved that to my default chat file.

 

When playing an online video game, always ignore chat.  Always.

There are -some- Global Channels that see frequent activity.  For example, the OOC/RP Global Channels (primarily populated by Everlasting players, mind you) will frequently just 'shoot the breeze.'  And, when someone drags up an inappropriate topic, there are Channel Operators who can try to handle it (assuming they're online at the time.  We -are- actually looking for a few more trustworthy folks who can handle that, and play frequently).  

There are also subcommunity/cultural Global Chat Channels that see decent activity, and of course Group/Coalition Global Channels.  Chaos United is another example of an active channel.  Not sure what their administration is like, though.  I don't generally pay attention to that channel enough to know if anyone says anything inappropriate, or what happens to them when they do.

Incidentally, if people are breaking the CoC in General, feel free to report it. Obviously we are a finite group, and we might not be able to be everywhere at once, but we will do our best to take speedy action if you file a report.

After about 2 hours of the general chat channel, I did the same thing.

 

Now help, etc. is nice and calm

 

General probably should be renamed LFI though.

I love general chat.  Sometimes people say things I don't like but I don't let it bother me.

The best bet is to find an active SG and chat there.  I doubt any SG's have constant chat going 24/7, but most SGs monitor and enforce some rules and it only takes a few people to get a decent conversation going.

There's Paragon Chat. It's been around basically since Rebirth. Nobody uses it much, and the MOTD says they are looking for mods to help. Maybe contact whoever owns that and talk to them.

The "Excelsior" global channel is usually pretty busy and isn't full of the, we'll say... questionable things that show up in /z sometimes. Just type:

Well, uh, General is for...uh...General stuff.  I’m not sure what you are asking for is really feasible.  Do you want “General, but to my specific Tastes and Sensibilities” channel or what?

 

Honestly just petition someone who is being a fucktard.  The GM’s don’t maybe have time for all of the issues but if enough people find a particular poster to be obnoxious and they petition them I’m sure something will happen.

What I want is for the code of conduct rules to be enforced in general chat.   Unfortunately what we seem to have a lot of is skilled trolls who know how to skirt the edges of those rules.  They manage to create a negative environment while doing nothing "technically" against the rules, even if they're violating the spirit of them.  It creates a situation where there is no active server wide off-topic channel.  

 

I'd honestly be happy if we can get everyone to follow a single rule, since the collection seems to be so complicated.  "Don't be a dick".  Too bad for me, though, some people get off on finding trolly ways to be a dick and not get in trouble for it.  Sucks to suck, I guess.

When they added general I assumed it was so the devs could gather up all the people who felt the compulsive need to share constantly into one spot so we could all collectively remove them from our tabs.  

 

Now the other chats work much more effectively.  Smart move devs.
