Inspired by this topic:

 

Here is my best current attempt at making a all mace bane. No gun, that means no venom grenade

 

Pros:

Capped m/r/aoe def. Really good def in most types by accident.

High damage mace attack chain, decent crit rate with placate

Decent s/l/psi resists

Good debuffing with surveillance and shatter armor

End stable w/o ageless

 

Cons:

Very expensive, purples and winters

Low aoe, especially pbaoe

Cannot solo 4x8 arachnos or carnies

 

 

Notes:

Single target attack chain: Surveillance->Shatter(crit)->Shatter Armor->Pulverize->Placate->BU->Shatter(crit)

AOE: BU->Crowd Control->Disruptor Blaster->Single till CC is up->Placate->CC

Great team character

Crowd Control is a monster if you get the mobs grouped up properly, but that is the biggest problem.

So, I have been tinkering. I made some improvements that allow me to solo 4x4 Arachnos and several other groups 4x8.

 

IMO Bane lack AOE, has has been pointed out. To fix that, I dropped the Mace epic and slotted up Mace Blast and Volley.

 

It's makes a significant difference in damage mitigation and getting rid of minions and lts.

 

The knockdown is helpful in group for crowd control. I am learning the, Bane Boogle. AOE, two steps back, cone, two steps forward, crowd control.

 

Putting assault back in had the nice side effect of limited the bane spider placate duration.

 

Current build, not a leveling build as I swapped the mace attacks directly out for the Mace Epic. I can come up with a leveling build if someone wants it.

Looks like a pretty decent setup for a Mace themed build, but I would definitely make room for the Disruptors and Blaster bots.  

 

Do you find Web Cocoon useful?  When I was last tinkering with a Mace Bane build, I tried to make it useful, proccing it out, but in the end it just felt like a gimped blast where I would do better taking a different Mace attack.  

 

Also, I'd be hesitant to skip Shatter Armor.  It's got better DPA than everything but Pulverize, is a good proc location (30 base recharge, perma hasten levels of global recharge, with a bit on top can get you 7.5s recharge with 90% proc damage chance) and gives -Res.  It would be your best single target attack if you proc it out.

I liked that you went pure mace, the redraws are terribly annoying on soldiers.

 

These do make decent Stalker/Tanks on paper.

Capped positional defenses and/or capped resists or high regeneration are not terribly difficult to achieve.

In practice, Banes are susceptible to debuffs and feel more like a strong mastermind-ish with up to 6? pets available. Incarnates can help.

Banes get 2 Disruptors, 1 PPP pet and the Lore pets.  Crabs are the ones that get 6 (2 Disruptors, 1 PPP, 3 Spiderlings + Lore).

 

Still though, the Disruptors can be really nasty and if you're building in enough recharge for perma Disruptors, they have the same duration and recharge as the PPP pets, so you might as well take that too.  

 

You're not wrong in that Soldiers make good MMs, minus the commands.  I'm still looking for the old live thread where someone did the damage comparison and showed that a Crab's 6 beat a Merc MM's 6 pet DPS. Yes Merc is the worst MM set, but still.

I will look into putting the pets in, maybe that the extra I need to handle arachnos. This is the joy of the beta server.

 

Web cocoon is useful for tagging runners and psi damage, but I am not in love with it.

 

It was a tough choice to drop it, but I have proc'ed out my mace volley to provide some -resist. If I put pets in, then shatter will come back.

I think I finally did it. 

 

First what didn't work. I tried a pet bane aka Spider-Bane. The pets were useful, but they are so dumb that every other fight they would aggro another group chasing runners.

 

I tried provoke to stop the runners, didn't work well enough. Being stealthy and having uncontrollable pets didn't work for me. The build is posted at the bottom just in case anyone was curious.

 

So, I was pondering kiramon's Night Widow build and though. How high can I get my defense.

 

With T4 Agility Core Paragon and some slot tweaking I was able to 55+% positional def and everything else 45+%.

 

That is enough to carefully handle 4x8 arachnos. In fights did I have to use barrier, pop a few insps. But my defense didn't collapse like a wet bag.

 

The Tarantula Mistress, not the queens, are the dangerous non-obvious mob. They have a -33% def debuff with high accuracy. I would target them first, so they couldn't keep the debuff up.

 

Crab slicers have a -12.5 def debuff.

 

My closest fight was 2 Mu Guardian bosses and a mistress, damn Mu must have high accuracy. That required barrier and some insps.

 

I might try and work Shatter Armor back in, if I can keep my defense.

 

Pros:

55+% positional def

45+% everything else

+20% def to everyone in range

+30% damage to everyone in range

End stable, doesn't required ageless even in long fights

I've been thinking about going down the Bane Path on my Arachnos Soldier. I took a slightly different approach and went mostly pure melee, weaponized Surveillance, and took Soul Mastery for a bit of added range and AoE. I went completely petless and went without Hasten as well. This build is a hover build, so if you want to drop the three powers I took from Flight, you can replace them with basically any other power you want without major considerations.

IMO of course.

 

Good job on defs and resists.

 

You should take Crowd Control ASAP. You'll need it when you do lower missions or TFs.

 

I prefer Mace Beam Blast over Volley. Blast is an AOE, Volley is a cone. In melee, the AOE is more practical.

 

Build up is awesome for stealth strikes. I would drop either leadership or tactics, you have too much accuracy IMO.

 

Gaussian for Leadership/Tactics is pretty common for the random free build up. Two slots or six.

 

Pummel is a nice power but redraw costs time. I would drop it, move the slots to leadership, the power slot for surveillance.

Good resists, but I would have more buffer in the positional def. If you're going to solo at high diff.

 

AOEs will chew you up if you get debuffed. Arachnos will drop -7.5 and -33 def on you. Not sure about the ITF debuffs.

 

Weaponized surveillance is intriguing.

Is Placate worth taking from a numbers perspective?  I seem to recall that even on Stalkers, who get a full crit, for many sets you actually end up lowering your DPS by using Placate.  It's hard to imagine it being worthwhile on a Bane.  I mean, if you want it for style/fun or just need a one-slot-wonder power then sure, but does it actually help your attack chain?

When I tried a 'pure mace' build, it was so slow against large numbers of enemies that I'm not sure Placate would improve performance except in very limited & specific content.

I don’t bother with placate or the hidden status crit.  I open fights with venom grenade.  The crit is 50% venom gives 20% for the whole team and prevents a double redraw going from mace, to gun, back to mace.  

 

Here are some numbers to consider concerning placate.  Placate animates in 1.848 arcanatime.  It provides a +50% damage crit.  

 

Other mace attack numbers.  Activations listed in arcanatime.  

Bash - 1.584, 72.3 dam

pulv - 1.716, 119 dam

shatter - 2.5, 154.6 dam

crowd cont - 2.244, 117.3 dam

 

placate + shatter 

1.848 + 2.5 = 4.348 seconds

0 + (154.6 *1.5)= 232 dam

 

pulverize +shatter

1.716+2.5= 4.216 seconds

119+154.6= 273.6 dam

 

bash + shatter

1.584+2.5= 4.084 seconds

72.3+154.6= 226.9 dam

 

placate + shatter provides 77.3 extra damage.  Anything that activates in a similar time as placate and does more than 77.3 damage will be a dps increase over placate.  

 

If you use anything other than shatter after placate that damage increase gets smaller.  

 

Placate + pulverize

1.848+1.726= 3.574 seconds

0 + (119*1.5) = 178.5 dam

 

that’s .5 seconds faster than bash + shatter with 48.4 less damage.  Without working out an attack chain I couldn’t tell you if placate into pulverize will cost you dps or not.  Maybe I will try to work it out later but with a 60s recharge on placate I would guess using placate will lower your dps.

Seems to me the simple way to look at this is as DPA.  Using your numbers:

Bash - 45.6

Pulverize - 69.3

Shatter - 61.84

Crowd Control - 52.3

 

If we think of Placate as an attack dealing damage equal to 50% of the damage of the attack that follows it, we can calculate the DPA for Placate as well.

Bash Placate - 19.6

Pulverize Placate- 32.2

Shatter Placate - 41.8

Crowd Control Placate - 31.7

 

So it looks to me like the only time using Placate will not lower your DPS is if you have significant gaps in your attack chain in which you're just waiting for something to recharge.  Also the above analysis doesn't take into account the possibility that an attack could land and break hidden status before getting the crit.

 

Like I said before if it's just a build filler or taken just for fun (which it is), I can see including Placate in a build.  But from a pure performance perspective you wouldn't want to use it.

 

Edit: I did think of one possible use.  Presuming that SoAs get the same 50% chance to crit on AoEs that Stalkers get, it might be worthwhile to Placate before Crowd Control against a large number of enemies.  Still, that's a 50% chance for a 50% crit.  Also a large number of enemies means a higher chance to have hidden status broken before getting your crit.

Banes only get minicrits from hide status on melee attacks unfortunately (do wish I could crit with Disruptor Blast...). After reading these past couple of posts I've decided to save placate for my final power slot just for this reason. I was originally going to get acrobatics but after reading about that one IO I decided it was unnecessary (I also got too many toggles as is). It seems strong and relatively affordable. I only have a handful of the IO sets so far but I did a mission and even with mostly generic IOs it played nicely.

So, yet again I keep tinkering on the beta server.

 

This one is for @Tidge, since they are the one that suggested the Presence pool.

 

Strong emphasis on AOE fear. Giving this build strong damage mitigation.

 

I didn't take Unrelenting for two reasons. I am not good at remembering to use long recharge powers. Two, I didn't have slots to make the recharge worth it.

 

Crowd control gets the terror ATO set to add more AOE fear. I finally got the power analyzer out, the ATO -dmg is -13.5% if anyone was wondering.

 

Surveillance does not get procs on purpose. I want to prep my stealth strike target w/o notifying it.

 

Intimidate is good for range pulling.

 

The build works well against 4x8 Arachnos and Carnies with the usual caveats. Sometimes RND is just going get you.
