Some things have changed with the patches. On the whole Fire Armor is still an offfense based armor and it is now more durable. But despite Burn having been tweaked to be (mostly) back on par with the bugged version it is (mostly) not worth using in a ST situation. This may require testing on a per case basis.

 

 

 

I'm messing around with Brutes and dropping builds piece meal into the forums where they will get lost. Might as well make a second compilation thread. Maybe I'll call it the Branker.

Anyway.

 

Perennial Claws/Fire. Can't go wrong with it. Might be better on a Tanker? That's because Claws' Follow-up work better on a Tanker. But also because by level 20 a Tanker has Spin -and- Burn -and- Follow-up and the team is merely following the ball of scratchy flaming death.

StJ/Fire. I remember getting annoyed with the piano rotation because of Crushing Impact's rotation. I've gone around this with a simpler Crushing Impact, Burn, Heavy Blow, Rib Cracker, Heavy Blow. This leaves a one second ish gap. Adding another Heavy Blow before Burn fixes it. Again a Tanker might get more out of this as Spinning Strike has an anemic radius making it act more like a cone than a fireball effect. Tankers, of course, get 50% more radius. This build is not bad at all in my opinion. The FF procs in Spinning Strike work about as well as Dragon Tail in Martial Arts and just like Dragon Tail the soft CC is invaluable.

MA/Fire. It's nearly as good as the Tanker version with 45% to melee/ranged/AoE and 90% to S/L (hole in E/N though), but the first AoE comes out at 26. Cringe. Can't see myself leveling something to 26 without AoEs and always have that Damocles sword if wishing to exemplar. At least a Tanker gets Burn at 18 which fills the AoE needs.

Savage/Fire. Hemmorhage still hasn't been fixed is still undertunned and not worth taking other than for the cool factor, but the animations look good and a build that boasts of -three- PbAoEs will thrive in the thick of combat.

I'm not touching this until the patch hits (and then I will have to rebuild it to include Fault (assuming the devs kindly give it the same code that allows Burn/Footstomp/Tremor/etc to be used while Hover-ing near the ground)) because again, first AoE comes at 28. Bless the current devs who understand a set shouldn't level without AoEs! Tanker again gets Burn at 18 so (until the patch at least) a Tanker version will be easier to level.

Ice/Fire. What I consider the best blend in offense and defense. The lower damage is offset by Brute and by Fire Armor. At 3:20 it has nearly a minute worse times in pylons than the EM's 2:30 (but EM is a beast) but one minute better times than the Tanker version. No -res procs involved. For a new player who wants to be safe but be punchy this build is my advice. Just start fights with Ice Patch.

Some minor bug fixes. Incidentally related to Fiery Embrace, but nothing huge and nothing about tweaking the raw numbers of Hemorrhage itself.

 

'Fixed' was the incorrect word. It's just so undertuned there is no point in taking it other than for cool factor (which is still a good point in itself).

Change Consumes IO set to Mocking Beratement, bit more +def/resist for S/L.  Consume's endurance drain is over done, its good with a taunt set if you are hitting several but to draw more endurance from 1 or 2 is when you need an endurance recovery set.  Can also use perfect zinger as well, damage proc makes a bit of an AoE proc.

Not if you're fighting one or two enemies. But if you want to, sure, go for it. Other than that the S/L def&res is already balanced on the knife's edge and in exchange you lose E/N resist, which is what the build is lacking, recharge, -rech protection

I have been leveling the Street justice build and thinking, hmmm... something is missing. Something is not clicking. And eventually figured out: the builders are anemic. 200 and 250 were just not exciting to press the buttons. Fast animations for sure, very forgiving fast recharges as well, but anemic.

 

Bone Smasher hits for 350. Vicious Slash for 440. Siphon Life for 530 (not using Soul Drain).

 

The FF procs worked really well at pushing the recharge even in the low levels though.

 

I feel like I will try Dark Melee instead. Even without Midnight Grasp two Siphon Life outdamage Crushing Impact. On a Tanker there wasn't much point but it had Burn at level 18 instead of 28 so it's a good excuse to grab Touch of Fear and see how it feels on a Brute.

I have to say I'm getting the same feeling with DM as I originally did with Ice Melee, as in, started one on a lark and then be suitably impressed. The darn thing is behaving -very- well! Two AoEs by level 8 made me go into Posi 1 at level 8 with the difficulty at +0x6 and though I died twice it masticated everything. Considering the slots I had available it was an impressive melting of spawns. Tough the little heal from Siphon Life is completely unimpressive it did add that little bit extra. I tried this combo as a Tanker and felt no chemistry, but on a Brute it's razing.

 

The lack of Build-up was felt in Posi 2 where the CoT usual BS caused much kiting since I couldn't overpower the -accuracy, but it was killing so fast I didn't have as much trouble as I first imagined.

 

I know in the low levels Brutes are strong, but I've leveled more than one recently and I could tell the difference. As a bonus is has most of its kit by level 20 lacking only 28 for Burn. But for once I was not slogging through content for that magic number. It's going to be nice having it for sure, but it was no slog to go up the levels.

As promised a Stone/Fire that includes Fault.

 

The good: a low level AoE! Stone needed one.

 

The bad: Fault is not actually an AoE. Full bar of Fury + BU + Gaussian = minions at half HP. Considering the recharge and endurance cost this is beyond terrible.

 

The horrible: Fault has incredibly bad native accuracy. It takes being level 50 with all the raw stats + Focused Accuracy + accuracy bonuses from miscellany sets for it to have 90% chance to hit. In the low levels even with it slotted it is embarrassing to use the skill and see so many misses. Again, considering the cost and recharge...

 

Also the horrible: Fault does not work while hovering. The devs refused to open a line of communication when asked if they could copy paste the code that lets Tremor/Footstomp/Burn be used while hovering, so I have no news to tell whether it is possible, impossible, too much work, an absolute no or a maybe. So for now I have a couple binds that I use to turn Hover on and off and it's as kludgy as anyone can guess. For the rest of you who are okay with not using Fly just move on past.

/bind lshift+1 "$$powexectoggleoff hover$$powexecname fault" - This requires two keypresses if for no other reason that when Hover/Flight/Mystic Flight/Jetpack is toggled off we are still in the air. It takes a second to drop, so, welp, a keypress, wait until we touch the ground, then a second keypress.

 

/bind 1 "$$powexecslot 1$$powexectoggleon hover" - This too requires two keypresses and will reactivate Hover/Mystic Flight/Flight/Jetpack. The powexectoggleon ensures that part will only activate if any of the above are toggled off. I suggest perhaps making more than one bind, maybe one for Tremor who doesn't care about roleplay and one more than just the first attack in case it's on cooldown.

 

Overall where I praise the previous build - DM/Fire - I cringe at this one. It's my first and only Brute/Tanker that I could look at and honest say 'This would not have soloed Posi 1, no way, not ever'.

 

This is because it encapsulates the worst of CoH gameplay. City of Cooldowns? City of Out of Endurance? Yes. Too long CDs, too heavy costs, then when the power is finally up we use it and it misses.

 

Horrible. I can only imagine trying to solo Posi 1 with Fault unable to actually do damage and the slow as molasses progress trying to make endurance last while tapping my foot at the recharge timers. Fault is also not Ice Patch and the mitigation from it was heh. Heh enough that I'm considering it is a waste of slots to keep the power.

 

 

That said the build has good potential but Fire Armor will be carrying it. Consume to help with the endurance, Burn to have an AoE until 32, etc. Seismic Smash still hits very hard and stuns a boss with just one hit and the whole ST rotation is available very early. Despite Fault being crap it does take an FF proc which reduces its role to risible AoE damage, middling to puny mitigation, but a turbo for the rest of the build. A bit like Dragon Tail but I'd take Dragon Tail over Fault.

 

We can chalk this as birthing pangs and with full IOs, more global recharge, etc, that things will straighten up.

 

Later on I can imagine that spamming Fault + the improved Tremor will help a lot with mitigation while Burn does the actual AoE damage. So I'll force myself to level a bit more, but it was cringy to reach Yin and take a minute circling around the first spawn slowly whittling them with Fault because I didn't have Burn yet. If the objective was adding a low level AoE until 32 it failed.

Re-made the Rad/Fire in the original post to have all the goods (Devastating Blow + Atom Smasher). My previous plays of the build (even on a Brute) stalled due to the unimpressive ST but it made sense when not using DB.

 

Also trying a Kinetic Melee version and it seems to actually work well with Fury pushing the low damage in the lower levels and then Burn picking up in the mid levels. The combo seems to complement itself with the longer lasting Build-Up mechanic playing well with the longer lasting Fiery Embrace. It's not too different from the Martial Arts tanker version where Dragon Tail helps pumping up the damage, but the difference is that on a Brute the MA variant only has Dragon tail at 26.

 

It very much needs Burn to pick the damage up though.

Did a few more builds.

 

Dual Blades/Fire was actually good fun in the early levels. Dropping down to 5% chance of failing the combo was good. The speedy Empower combo carried the build from Posi 1 to Synapse and even in the low levels the rotation was forgiving with Lotus Drops followed by Vengeful Slice making a neat loop. Once I got to Yin and started the Attack Vitals my interest waned. That 2.7 Vengeful Slice really killed the flow that had been speedy and flashy once it became part of the attack chain.

 

The combo on a Brute did not get to shine with the Blinding Feint +damage mechanic falling flat due to how those buffs work out on Brutes and that didn't help either. A combo without Burn and on a Scrapper/Tanker would probably shine better.

Next I tried a Kinetic Melee/Fire. It was alright in the low levels with Fury helping boost the very low damage of the first three attacks. Burst helped with the FF proc fitting in nicely, but it fell off pretty quick and even with Fury it was an exercise in frustration to tap those keys and do such anemic damage. Ultimately it ends being a FF vehicle to throw more Burns.

The last one actually surprised me: Spines/Fire. I only had time to solo Posi 1 and 2 but it behaved pretty well. Of course it is too soon to say anything since Fury in these low levels just impels any Brute build forward.

 

That said not only did it went fast (35 minutes for Posi 1, 45 minutes for Posi 2, both ran at +0x6) but I was surprised at how easily things went with neither having a single death. To put in perspective my Rad/Fire got trounced at the ambush on the final mission and had a couple deaths in Posi 2 when getting the internal bombs where CoT lay a lot of CoT bullshit. 45 minutes is also a good ten minutes shorter than my usual when soloing Posi 2.

 

This build was pretty complicated to fit everything in and in the end I'm short two slots to be happy: one for the last recovery unique in Health and a damage proc for Barb Swipe. With ST being a problem for Spines even a low chance of a damage proc is nothing something I like removing, but, no more slots. The build is also -super- heavy and I really don't like not having that last recovery unique. I'm talking 1 net EPS. At first glance this does not appear sustainable and Cardiac might be needed. I'll see how it goes though since Recovery Serums might be enough between Consumes.

 

If I keep tweaking I might find the slots.

 

I decided to ignore Impale's long animation to use Ripper instead: damage is comparable (407 Ripper VS 406 Impale and Impale having no good bonuses for the build in the available sets) , Ripper animates faster, and the coup de grace was that it can slot a FF proc to push for more Burns. Not gonna lie that Impale feels a bit like a newbie trap for the unaware since in the time it takes to animate Barb Swipe and Lunge can be used for more damage and a soupçon of more animation time.

 

ST is still not going to be stellar just looking at the damage of each attack, but the double damage aura helps the whittling and Burn is the heavy attack that Spines lacks.

 

For leveling a Barb Swipe, Lunge, Barb Swipe, inherent attack (in my case Mutagen) was super forgiving and I always had something to press. Double damage auras lets me ignore minions and focus on the bosses. Irradiated Ground it ain't, but Quills does do something once combined with Blazing Aura (neither alone does appreciable damage).

 

I predict this will fall off in a few levels but the progression is good: low levels Fury pushes the build, medium levels Burn shows up to prop the failing damage. +4 content is where things will probably drop into whittling enemies down.

Between those 6, off the top of my head, I estimate probably ~2500+ vet levels. Highest currently ~1350, none under 100.

 

Literally the biggest reason I don’t make far more of them is that I don’t want to slow down the vet level production too much. They’re so easy to level and kit up, but I like them large numbers.

I have to say so far I'm not, like, hyper impressed. Not having Burn since level 18 diminishes the impact of a Brute's superior damage. But the EM/Fire literally has no downsides. Strong ST? Yes. Good AoE? Yes. It just does not exemplar down to Posi 1 without a second thought but that's not exactly a common endeavor anyway.

 

But I was mentioning to a friend how my Brutes felt a lot more squishy in Synapse and after some thinking I decided that, yeah, of course. Dropping a Burn and killing half the spawn is half the damage not coming in. So of course.

 

Granted that at Yin Burn is already in and then it's driven by a Brute's damage and it slathers napalm over anything that moves. I was playing with a Tanker friend and I'd sneak up behind them and see their patient whittling of a spawn. Then I'd drop Burn and kill all the mobs surrounding them 😄

If you aren’t farming, I think tank would be better too.

 

Only reason /fire brutes dominate farming is because their mitigation deficit vs tanks is nigh non-existent with excess fire resistance, so the damage difference takes the sole spotlight.

 

For regular play, I’ve pretty much stopped playing Brutes except for /EA and /Regen. The damage difference is barely noticeable compared to the mitigation difference. Heck, not even sure my Fire/Rad is behind at all at farming either. I built it with maximum procs to see just how close to a Brute I could get it to feel, and I can’t really tell a big difference.

And then went to solo stuff to test it. It really melts things despite having had to sacrifice Atom Smasher due to lack of slots and finding Burn + Irradiated Ground is enough AoE.

 

I then decided to run the Yin test just to see the difference with the -res procs in IG. Now, granted, it's not a perfect test since A) Amplifiers ran out, and B) the character is in the upper 40s instead of lower 30s so there are a lot more slots.

 

But with that said I'm surprised at a 40 minute run. Same as the Tanker I felt as 'slow' (but lets keep in mind it had Amplifiers and Fiery Embrace at Yin's level) and only four minutes faster than the Rad/Rad Brute and six minutes faster than the Stone Armor/Rad.

 

How it -feels-? It feels like the Brute melts everything at a much faster clip be it ST or in AoE. One BU and a Burn kills a whole spawn compared to the Tanker who feels a lot more anemic.

Went to the test server to try the Rad/Fire build.

 

 

First try 2:15. Better than my EM/Fire Brute who got 2:30.

 

Next try I got 3 minutes 😄 Oh CoH, never change...

 

Third try 2:39.

 

 

...of course the Rad/Fire cheats outrageously since it has two -res procs in IG which work very well for pylons. So for the sake of testing I exchanged those two procs for damage procs. It's not something I would condone but just to see the difference in numbers, aaaaand...

 

3:40.

 

More tests could be ran but its enough for now.

Pretty much. It still has a CC component but I found it less useful when not on a Scrapper who can chain it and mobs barely have time to get up before being knocked down again. There's a post with Shockwave in though.

Decided to try my beloved Ice/Fire Armor to see how it behaved in the Yin test (be in the low thirties and still running amplifiers to make the test equal, so I couldn't use the one I already had).

 

The truth is... it didn't behave particularly awesomely.

 

46 minutes which shows the weakness of Frost in only hitting part of the enemies instead of that nice PbAoE where we just sit there and hit all mobs. The survival was not exceptional either despite Ice Patch. Ice Patch is, in my opinion, a bit like having an extra defensive toggle. We definitely notice we're taking more damage without it, but it also doesn't save from death if overwhelmed.

 

Breaking line of sight and throwing an Ice Patch does do wonders to help survival, but it's something like an extra 20-30% in the survival scale.

I'm trying a Psi/Fire having only done it with a Tanker. And it's actually behaving quite alright, though to be fair I've not reached end game and robots. Even so all the fire will surely mitigate Psi's problems while all the FF proc-ing will keep the Burns churning out.

 

The progression felt nice too. Did Posi 1 0x6 at level 8 and the low level Fury made mince meat out of things. Then after a trouble-less Posi 2 with Insight noticeably helping with the damage I went into Synapse and Clockwork being weak to psi kept the ball rolling.

 

Psi Blade Sweep is garbagey and tbh once having Burn I stopped using it, but for Synapse and under it's the sole AoE -and- doubles as third ST skill. It hits decently hard but 69% (why -exactly- 69%, devs of old?) makes it hard to hit enemies. Frost it ain't. I can understand narrow but long cones, or short but wide cones, but short and narrow surpasses me.

 

Regardless it's just three TFs and since the build lacks a third ST skill and AoE for such low levels I picked it up.

 

At Yin I had both Greater Psi Sword and Burn and it was soloed in 46 minutes which is a bit slow for a Fire Armor Brute but forgivable due to only using Burn for an AoE. It actually did not go too badly since I could either finesse the Freak Tanks with a timely KU from TK Blow or Burst with Greater Psi Sword and prevented a good number of them from healing before being killed. I could probably better that time since I was trying to force a 'no inspiration' run but due to have all toggles with one slot only it wasn't working too well (two deaths which accounted for part of the extra minutes).

 

I was eager to try Mass Levitate so went straight to Moonfire and soloed it in a respectable hour and six minutes. Mass Levitate is a really good breather since it has such a long animation for enemies. Between being tossed up really high, then landing, then having to do the animation to get up. It's not Scrapper Shockwave but it's close and with Burn ticking under the bodies as they were tossed and the FF proc the damage was pretty good. The -recharge was extremely obnoxious but once complete the build has a decent 80% resistance to it.

 

 

So far I am using GPS but still unsure whether to keep it or not. A long time ago someone ran tests (but on a Scrapper) where not using GPS ended being the same damage due to Insight's damage boosting. In a perfect world/game we would have a good UI to track Insight and only use it at the last second but this is not the case. I am not -super- impressed by GPS yet, but it's a disservice to compare it while leveling to the final product where it boasts of two purple damage procs that have a hefty 83% chance of going off.

 

To keep Insight rolling for longer I'm not overthinking too much and try to replace GPS with Burn if possible. In AoE this works nicely as Burn, Mass Levitate, Psi Blade, TK Blow, Psi Blade can sort of be looped allowing to keep Insight from being used. After two rotations I use GPS on a boss so it does not go to waste.

 

 

Overall it's pretty pleasant to play and the damage feels good. Triple procced Burn melts a whole spawn and what survives gets tossed in the air which seems to reliably triggers Insight. Mids says Mass levitate has a 20% chance to trigger Insight and a 40% chance to trigger Insight. I have no idea why it has two such things (any idea, @Bopper?). The 20% might be per enemy which would explain the reliable triggering. Regardless it makes mobs whine to have survived triple procced Burn and be tossed in the air, only to land and be assailed by Insight powered hits before they can even get to their feet. It wasn't unheard of to kill a red boss before it got up.

 

 

If there is a wish for it I can whip a leveling build.

It's 20% to grant it if Boggle is not active.

If Boggle is active, it becomes 40% instead

Something interesting that I tested today is that Overwhelming Force in Burn does not turn KD into KB like Avalanche does. Considering how well Burn takes to procs this has value for defense.

Also was looking at Rad Melee and after some mathing switching Devastating Blow for Contaminated is a 15% damage loss (originally 9%, but had to check actual slotting since DB's slow animation makes it carry procs well).

 

15% is 15%. In actual gameplay perhaps a case can be made of not corpse blasting with the devastatingly slow animation and how misses eat 3 seconds, but 15% is still 15% on a set that does not shine for its ST.

 

Could be worse though, so I'll go out on a limb and call the switch viable since the animation of DB is one of the downsides and reasons not to pick Rad Melee.

 

 

Upsides: six slotting Unrelenting Fury in Contaminated Strike to ease endurance demands, E/N up to a reasonable near 63% (68% with Barrier).

 

Considerations: ditching a damage proc from Burn to an Overwhelming Force proc to force KDs since it does not create KBs. Between Avalanche in Atom Smasher and Burn part of a spawn can be kept bouncing for precious seconds. Not sure I can recommend it since damage procs in Burn are worth their weight in gold, but...

I remember making this as a Tanker and having good fun with it, but it had Burn at 18 so the FF proc in Whirling Axe played very well together same as MA. With a Brute the starter will be slower though with it only having Whirling Axe and it being pretty poor damage.

 

I'm tempted at trying it again now that I've licked the difficulty in fitting everything. It will have too many attacks though, but the recharges are lengthy and force it. Not Rad Melee this where a 1, 2, 3, 2 work. With this it's going to require Burn anyway, -and- four attacks.

 

The rotation is going to be Burn, then spam everything with emphasis on the hardest hitters, but the way the recharges are the first skill used will be the first to recharge anyway. I tried removing Chop from the rotation but couldn't since nothing recharges fast enough to be re-used and make a working rotation.

 

 

Truthfully it does not look like a hard hitting combo. None of the attacks get past 500 damage and the animations are slow. As much as we make noises about Devastating Blow it does over 250 more than the hardest attacks in Axe at the cost of 0.4 seconds more.

 

I remember ultimately finding the damage too mushy on the Tanker despite the very good start but it's been long enough I do not mind giving it a go as a Brute.

 

Also, funny enough despite being a bladed weapon and lethal damage, not one attack does -def.
