Copyright Policy

Use of copyrighted characters and content without permission is not permitted when creating characters or Architect content. This includes characters and stories from intellectual property belonging to any IP that is not City of Heroes.

Additionally, creating copies of existing characters from the City of Heroes / Villains lore or naming your Supergroup after existing groups from the City of Heroes / Villains lore is not permitted. Use of these characters in Architect Entertainment and character backstories is permitted, and you are free to present yourself as a member of an existing group or portray your Supergroup as an offshoot or subdivision of an existing group, but you cannot portray yourself as owning or being in control of any existing group.

THIS IS NOT CLEAR BECAUSE RULE ARE BEING ENFORCED BEYOND THIS example SUPER-MAN there is no copy write on this name.  IF a you do not make the image is it acceptable who knows. You will not know until it gets delete and replaced with generic. This example name  is not copyrighted

I CHECKED but you will still get flagged in this  game for it seems.  IF you are banning people  for this you need to say you cant put ANYTHING even close so people know what the f you mean.

Perhaps examples of the character you lost would help us understand what it is you are referring to?

Doja Dash Cat. with the dash in the middle. Apparently their is an artist named DOJA CAT but not with the dash. Anyway that is beside the point. they need to change  or update the copy right policy to include anything close. (because their is no copyright on DOJA-CAT or doja dash cat either). She does not own or anyone own any of the later.  I pissing people off having their name changed to generic with type of guideline and people trying to figure out how to get the name they want without breaking the rules. I been using Doja Cat since 2004 @aol.com

It may not just be a copyright thing?

In this article they talk about where her name comes from:

https://www.nickiswift.com/241200/the-real-meaning-of-doja-cats-name/

And there is a chance that this might breach:

The following is considered prohibited content:

  • Anything illegal in the real world:
    • This includes anything related to gambling, child pornography, terrorism, illegal controlled substances, and any real world criminal activity (yes, we know City of Villains exists)

As it is a controlled substance in some parts (depending on where you are).

I am not a trademark expert. I am a man on his phone with Google. But I looked up “Doja Cat trademark” and this came up:

https://trademarks.justia.com/882/25/doja-88225430.html#:~:text=DOJA CAT Trademark of Amala,Number 88225430 %3A%3A Justia Trademarks&text=The name(s)%2C portrait,register is made of record.

I suspect they may just be being cautious. As some people are very litigious. Im hypothesising.

You’d probably get away with Dojo Cat (maybe a feline themed MA/SR stalker). I won’t sue if you use that name btw.

she owns Doja cat Not doja-cat or doja dash cat. I did that before i placed the name. Anyway its not my point they need to change this policy to include anything close so you have idea what they mean. Because I went by copy right.

In the unlikely event you decided to start a music career under the name “Doja-Cat”, I suspect her and her legal team wouldn’t be impressed. It’s the same reason we don’t have loads of “5uperman” toons running about.

I'm pretty sure you couldn't create a comic book under "Super-man" or "Supermann", or any number of permutations, either.  The rules are kept vague so as to avoid "rules lawyers" from trying to get away with something that is against the spirit of said rule.

this is why if you have an idea any idea that is original you need to copyright it first. Anyway from what i have read she is far from a comic book character. They need to further expand on this rule so they are not getting pissy with folks.

So THEY don’t get pissy?

hoookay…

Speaking of, shouldn’t this be a private discussion with them? The general population can’t do much when it comes to responding to what sounds like an official complaint.

I have done a TON of AE work, both long form and single arc. Just search the AE mish list for my sig @cranebump. For more information on my stories, head to the AE forum sub-heading and look for “Crane’s World.” Support your AE authors! We ARE the new content.

Instead of going all "caps lock" and trying to garner an audience on here. Did you reach out to the team and file a ticket to get a specific answer instead of speculation?

I get it you had an idea and it got quashed for not a good enough reason in your book because of a vague set of guidelines. Take it up with the people in charge.

I understand being disappointed that one of your characters' name got changed, but imagine how much more disappointed you'd be if you went to log onto HC and it didn't exist anymore over something as stupid as fucking Doja-Cat.

On the topic of the thread title itself, don't expect clearer guidelines. Any attempt to clarify what is a veritable swamp of legal landminds will only create loopholes and risks.

The flexibility to be cautious is important. Players who feel they are not in violation are invited to contest actions directly via a ticket.

Lines summed this up very well.

If you are in doubt, ask a GM. We are happy to help folks and appreciate people trying to follow the rules.
If you do not like our code of conduct, and the rules required to play here - then do not do so.

The only rules we have here are to keep the server safe and operating long term, and so the majority of players can enjoy playing.
