General Chat is an open sewer.

Recommended Posts

In my experience there are only two types of people who argue on the internet:

  1. People who believe their opinions matter enough to inflict them on others
  2. People who enjoy trolling and getting a rise out of others

You will never change the minds of the former, and you will never change the behavior of the latter. Learn to identify those who debate in good faith versus those that just want to inflict themselves on others. And don’t bother asking someone else to intervene, because these people are cockroaches drawn to the dirtiest corners of public discourse. Just keep yourself out of the filth and you’ll see a lot less of them. 🙂

That is advice to someone who has a problem with general chat. People who do not have a problem have no reason to post their not having a problem.

As pointed out by MANY of the posters here.... General Chat was added to get this stuff off LFG.  Which even my dumb butt agrees with.  And I find it humorous.  If someone is violating game policies with what is posted (and that is reported) it is dealt with by the Dev team.

I would float the idea that the suggestion to remove General is because it offends that one person, the OP.

Are you suggesting we have a Dev police general to the standards and policies of whatever the OP decides is appropriate?  Because even I think that is batshit crazy.  And I know batshit when I see it.

General chat existed before lfg existed on retail. On HC they have been around the same length of time. (to my knowledge)

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

No, there was no General chat back on live.  It was added around 2020.

General Chat did not, initially, exist on Homecoming.  It was added specifically to move garbage and off topic chat off of the Help and LFG channels (and to a lesser extent, Broadcast).

Basically, it's *intended* to be a corrosive sewer, one that experienced and/or knowledgeable players can choose to avoid.

The problem is, it was added by default to everyone's chat tabs - meaning that every new player is subjected to it.

General Chat here is... well, like General Chat in *any* game. New People coming into the City have likely played other games prior to joining our community, so most of them will have had some experience with that sort of noise already. You don't need to clutch your proverbial pearls and demand to know why nobody will "think of the children"... Most newbies aren't pure, innocent little lambs who are going to be lured into moral ruin by questionable conversations they might see in an MMO. They've probably seen it all already.

Also, you can reply to those conversations without acting like one of King Louis' crusaders sacking Avignon... Bringing your own faith or political views into it, particularly in an aggressive way that's likely to be as offensive to others as their opinions are to you, isn't likely to foster any understanding or good will towards your point of view. It's also a violation of the game's code of conduct itself.  As you may have noticed, this is a pretty diverse community with a lot of differing perspectives, backgrounds and opinions.  We're not all going to agree, and you shouldn't expect us to.

So... yeah. If you find yourself getting offended, step back and take a minute to cool off. If you're really outraged and think rules are being broken, report the situation and let the mods have a look at it. And realize that yours is not necessarily the ONE TRUE OPINION to which all others must bow. I know that's not easy.  It goes against a lot of cultural conditioning. But when you're dealing with people from a lot of different backgrounds from all over the world, you need to learn how to accept that. That's just reality.

General chat was created to give people some place to chat rather than doing it in /lfg or the /help channel and, I would think, that a good number of us would think that is a good thing.

That being said, since long-winded conversations go on in that channel, I don't tend to monitor it when I'm trying follow /lfg and the /help channel as I try to help other players and maybe posting in or looking for posts in the /lfg.

I go to the tab I have with general on it when I don't need to pay attention to the other stuff.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

Yes, I am a Christian.  Yes my views may be different than yours but everyone has different views.

Same, FWIW.

Unfortunately... that label isn't always particularly good indicator of what a person finds funny or acceptable, how thick their skin is, or where they sit on the sliding scale between "prideful/holier-than-thou/prosperity-gospel/get-the-heck-out-of-my-pew-we've-been-sitting-here-for-generations" and "humble/chief-of-sinners/dirt-poor-suffering-servant/can-I-give-you-the-shirt-off-my-back".

Example: I'm from Northern Ireland, which is a lovely place where two sets of supposedly-Christian groups have been knocking the absolute stuffing out of each other for decades because a bloke named William liked Orange tictacs and they prefer Green ones or something equally ridiculous. One of our country's major claims to fame is that we have some of the best joint surgeons on the planet because the eedjits can't go five minutes without putting bullets through each other's kneecaps. OK, things have supposedly been on pause since 1998, but it's still it's all themmuns' fault, they started it and we don't want their sort 'round here.

Personally I find "Life of Brian" downright hilarious; I'm pretty self-depreciating with a black sense of humour, I have a large threshold for profanity and for what some might consider verbal heresy, and it takes a *lot* to rub me up the wrong way enough to break out the metaphorical pitchforks.
But I have a few friends who went protesting outside the cinema waving placcards and chanting "Down with this sort of thing!" whenever 50 Shades of Grey hit the screens.

The old George Orwell quote is unfortunately often quite accurate:
"As with the Christian religion, the worst advertisement for Socialism is its adherents."
It's usually difficult to find someone online who argues that Jesus was a bad person; but you'll find plenty of people that argue that Christians are bad people.
And I'd be right at the top of that list.
(Because I believe that I'm fundamentally (ha!) a bad person, who has been saved by Grace... although I fully recognise that other's Milage May Vary)

However as a result, if anyone posts something like "please stop X/Y/Z it offends me because I'm a Christian"... heckles can get raised.
Best case, you'll end up with a bunch of folk thinking "why are they bringing something so off topic as religion into the discussion forums for a fantasy RPG?".
It's similar to bringing up political beliefs, but with a few thousand years of hate, bigotry and martyrism thrown in for good measure.
It might look like a nice broad road to take... but... just don't.
Even if you're lugging your cross behind you.

Now. ALL THAT SAID, the General Chat Channel is a wretched hive of scum and villainy (and heroes, rogues and vigilantes). You must be cautious.

The obvious solution is to remove the general chat but with each new character it resets and you have to remove it again.  Also, with every person joining the game for the first time they don't know how to remove general chat and they get to hear about how someone was abused as a kid, how Christians are bigoted, insulting Jesus Christ, whatever flavor of politics or, sorry to say woke, that someone wants to vomit on you.

My suggestion is to police the thing or to make it off by default and let someone turn it on if they choose.

Ah, so criticisms of Christianity should be 'policed'.  Because you are a Christian.  Hmmm. How about... no?

The others here have already offered excellent suggestions for resolving the personal issue that you are having. With actions you can take to block or report, if the offense is particularly egregious to you. In other words, the onus is on your shoulders to take action, not have the system passively support your religious worldview by suppressing others'. Whether you like it or not, there is just as much room in this online space for people critical of religion (in general) and/or Christianity (specifically) as there is room for the religious.

That being said, the Code of Conduct is pretty clear:

  • Quote

If you encounter a negative person please block or ignore them; do not escalate the situation by engaging them yourselves. If their behaviour continues, please report them...

Now that Homecoming is licensed by NCsoft to run and develop the game isn't it time that the open sewer which is general discussion is cleaned up?

Without going in to too much detail I was highly offended the other day by some comments in the general chat.  They were opposite of what I believe in politicially, morally, and they had nothing whatsoever to do with the game.  And it went on and one with multiple participants.  I made the mistake of pushing back against the narrative they were pusihing.  Then they started calling me hater, bigot, all that stuff.  And telling people to globaly ignore me.

Some did.  Now what is the purpose of general chat?  Shouldn't it be to discuss, general things, or game related things, etc.  But it should not be a place where you can be offensive and then if anyone complains or push back they offensive people encourage people to globaly ignore you.

Thoughts?  Suggestion?  And if you want to come at me as a person because of this post-- fine-- because i never said anything hateful previously and all i did was push back.  Here we can see it plain as day and there will be a record of what is said.

Yes, I am a Christian.  Yes my views may be different than yours but everyone has different views.

Are you the one whose religious toon name got genericked in the middle of the chat? If so, you don't have to worry about many people bothering you. You made a lot of people's lists.

Any discussion of politics or religion should be policed. This is a videogame and it's accompanying forums. There are plenty of other places to hold those volatile discussions.
