Over a year later, not a word. Most of my bios are blank. People care about THEIR OWN bios, so why bother writing something up that only the author is going to read? I am always reading peoples backstories! I find it fun. I also usually have a backstory for each of my toons I start. If you don't think people read other players back stories May I direct, you to "Stories of the zones" on reddit by the awesome and super famous Scutt. Scutt searches for cool costumes with unique backstories and has made an on going gallery for people to enjoy. on a final note...I would read your toons backstory. eiynp
it's hard to manage "show, don't tell" in 1024 characters, especially given the limited emotes/expressions COH avatars are actually capable of. Too many people structure their bio like a character sheet, which is boring; the trick to a good character description is to let other people imagine as much of it as possible. I like to write little vignettes about the character, rather than provide the whole background. people definitely do notice when you write a good one, though Edited February 20 by eiynp

Please see me after class. Well said. I tried to give more restrictive prompts, including the character limit and also asking ChatGPT to exclude generic genre tropes and focus on the character itself. But it still churned out derivative garbage. I think a better use for it would be to feed it some basic power choices and let it write a freeform story, for when you want to play some specific AT/powerset in the game and don't have a great character idea. In that case, even if ChatGPT gives you poorly-written swill, there may be some concept suggested by it that gives you ideas to prompt something interesting.

Grouchybeast
I'd write more bios if the interface wasn't so frustratingly bad. I'm hopeful that it will be on the list to look at, now, though, since the new player experience is being focussed on and the bio composition window is something new players encounter early. GroovyJivester
How can you say a person is lazy by using A.I. as a writing assistant? I mean I come up with the Hero's/Villain's name, costume, and powers so having an A.I. assist me with the background seems pretty creative on my part especially because I either edit and/or have the A.I. regen the backstory to something I like. I use Bard/Gemini to get at least three drafts to choose from. I guess if I had the A.I generate a name after picking my power set, hit the random button in costume design and then had the A.I. come up with a battle cry and description I would be taking the lazy way out but using A.I. as a writing assistant is a far cry to being lazy/non-creative. I probably could come up with the argument that Dungeon and Dragons is the lazy person's way to play fantasy games because said person is relying on an organic intelligence to come up with the game world. Just because its artificial doesn't make it lazy. Oh and my icon is a.I. genned because I have no artistic talent so I guess I'm lazy. You could have taken a screen shot of your groovy character instead, which would have been more YOU, but no..... 😃 The magic is still in the editing. Ever heard of William S Burroughs and his Cut-Up Technique for writing? Long story, but having read most of his stuff, just reprinting what it created got old really quickly; reading what was created and then writing based upon the associations and ideas it suggested? Fantastic stuff. Meanwhile, online publishers want to hit "create" on their new random number generators and then cut and paste the results without even editing them fort accuracy. Doomguide2005
Chat GPT and similar AI are as awful at it as they currently are. It's only going to improve. Just think about how long they've existed and what the original outputs looked like. There's material out there now that the vast majority of folks won't even notice is AI generated when they look at it and many of them couldn't pick out the 'fake' even if told one was AI generated. 1 hour ago, Clave Dark 5 said: alskdhfbsoldkjhworbfoiuwebdjwkehbr, nme vlkjhshoiycgweoiuybrlkewbrlkjhwgeckujygj Now find the poetry, emotional resonance and humanity in that please. You kind of missed the point though it wouldn't surprise me if that was deliberate. I think you had the post highlighting all the bits of unimaginative writing up thread. Well those various phrases are unimaginative crud commonly known as tropes and virtually all human writing is full of them which is why there's a word for it. Sure Chat GPT writes like a poorly plagiarizing high schooler at the moment. But that's just in the current state, it was only a short bit of time ago when it would have barely passed muster as a poorly plagiarizing kindergartner. And I've no idea how skilled at writing prompts FFFF is either.

eiynp
All chatgpt and similar generative models will ever be able to do is mimic; they can mimic some stuff pretty well right now, and in the future it seems likely they'll be able to mimic more things. But that's all they do, and imo people will find their limits pretty quickly (stable diffusion for example is already starting to have problems filtering input that was generated by the engine itself.) it'll have applications for writing very formulaic material (like say, level 1 support, or clickbait news) but it's never gonna replace human authorship because it can't

And for extra fun, have it write the bio in a particular style, like “…using hillbilly Appalachian slang” or “….Roman-styled prose.”
sbloyd
I dunno, I get tells complimenting my costumes and bios all the time. And I do the same to others. And I've no idea how skilled at writing prompts FFFF is either. I'm sure it will get better at not being completely bland, but it still, by definition, can't come up with an original angle or make a thematic connection between things, unless one of it's scraped sources did so, or its human wielder tells it to. I figure a lot of it's going to stay in "fairly dumb" territory, the occasional peak aside. People are treating it like it's going to drive our cars and do our homework for us, like a train smoothly following previously laid tracks... without realizing all the work that goes into laying down tracks (planning, design, materials considerations, traffic laws and zoning, track maintenance, etc.) Humanity is basically a lazy bunch, so there's going to be some really telegentic screw-ups as time goes by too.
