Where do they go?

Just finished an MSR which was a lot of fun and I'm floating there, popping off anything purple that moves as are the other 40+ members of our league, plus sundry robots, pets et al and I got to thinking.

 

We must've "defeated" literally thousands of Rikti in the MSR. I picked up over 1000 merits I think just from that one raid, so we could be talking around 5000 Rikti of varying ranks. That's a lot.

 

they fall down and fade away. They ain't in the Zig. And there's no mention anywhere in the Rogue Isles, Paragon City or Praetoria of large Rikti holding facilities. So where do they go? Thousands of Rikti... just vanishing into the ether. Are MSRs really just a method of mass extermination? Not terribly heroic if it is 🤣

The Rikti reclaim their "defeated".  They are then processed for their failures and used as a form of sustenance and bio fuel for their fleet.

The soldiers went to the infirmary deep inside the mothership. Like humans, the Rikti have teleporters, but theirs are much more advanced. With this technology, the Rikti can repel human attacks without any casualties.

 

MSR (Mutual Survival Review) serves as a training session for both sides.

Yup, humans got their teleportation tech from the Rikti.

I was being slightly facetious in my original post (genuinely only a little) and I do recall something about the Rikti being the original developers of the mediporters.

 

So let's assume this scenario for a moment: Rikti are stranded in their mothership, and related underground tunnel complex. Heroes decide to take them down a peg or two and bomb the crap out of their ship, beat the hell out of their crew and teach them a lesson.

 

In Game Lore is that a single event or is it truly a repeated thing? If it's the former, why isn't it repeated since Heroes seemed to get the wood over the Rikti. If it's the latter why not go inside the ship and ensure Rikti no longer present a threat to Earth and Humans. Earth is for humans after all, billboards tell us that. This seems like yet another of the loose ends in the game that requires further development. And if the Rikti mediporter tech is so good, why haven't they made greater incursions outside of their existing confines?

I'd say this is a place where the lore takes a back seat to game mechanics. There's a *tiny* bit of lore, sure (Vanguard are aware of the "new" (as opposed to when it was the Rikti Crash Site) generators, etc.) but otherwise it's a thin coat of lore flavor (maybe hazelnut) over a repeatable game event.  Realistically, there's no way that (for instance) every December Trixie over on Everlasting can run "the smushening" with 10+ MSR runs back to back as an actual, "this happens within game lore and canon."  (Yes, this is a thing.) Just like Perez Park likely wouldn't have hundreds if not thousands of gang members just standing around in groups constantly so you could run back and forth and street sweep, or the task forces wouldn't have "oh no, what a surprise, the exact same thing happened witht he last group I sent out five minutes before you, and will happen again if you want to run it when  you finish this run."

 

The events of the RWZ arcs (and other Rikti arcs) and LGTF happen as well, sure, but just once (and don't rely on an MSR.)

Yep, the Rikti were first.  From the wiki article:

Operating word is "derived", I think.  That suggest that though we got something up and running, the Rikti's devices are still more advanced.  Who knows what that means, however.  Long before this thread, I'd always assumed the reason for seemingly endless hordes is that the Rikti, like us, pull their troops at point of collapse and give them a complete recharge spurring them into the battle again.  The also wear power suits which may serve as life protection units not unlike a certain red-clad war lord in a very cheezy, often-referenced video-game movie.

Why not go inside the ship?  Because as much as they've advanced into the ship each effort, humans have yet to figure out how to get the shield/boarding repulsion system completely disabled.  Redundancies kick in and repulse them each time.  If Vanguard ever figures out how to get out of the "bowl" and past the access points deeper into the ship, theoretically, humanity should be able to neutralize the threat, but then, no one knows what waits below.  It could be a single greater defense, or perhaps a series of defenses each as tough as all the others.  And remember, heroes barely won the war.  If not for the success of the strike team disabling the dimensional portal, the ending would have been very different.

 

I'd also note that Rikti are trickling through a lesser dimensional rift, the same one that brought the Honoree through, if I recall correctly, so that's more reinforcements, though not the horde as before.  Still, its enough to keep Vanguard and its allies, still rebuilding super-powered numbers years after the war, from getting the upper hand.
