Lockpick Posted October 26 Posted October 26 Out of the new sets that HC has developed, which ones are fun to play and strong enough for all content? Fun to play for me is to not have hokey gimmicks like Storm Cell. 1 3
merrypessimist Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Most of them have gimmicks of one sort or another. Assault control is pretty good, assuming you can deal with all the ground targeting for powers. There's only like two abilities in the entire set that don't need a location target. 1

I'd say if you're not looking for something new that has any kind of gameplay mechanic, stick with the old vanilla powersets that let you roll your face on the keyboard and you won't be disappointed. 1 1 I lead weekly Indom Badge Runs / A newer giant monster guide by Glacier Peak / A tour of Pocket D easter eggs! / Arena All-Star Accolade Guide! lemming Posted October 27 Posted October 27 I love my Storm/Dark Sentinel. It's not an exciting character, but it's a fun concept. The update to Axe is great. Fold Space is another fun addition when used well. Seismic Blast is another fun one. Electric Affinity is a very useful set The rest I haven't had much experience with, so will leave that to others. 1
Without_Pause Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Depends on far back you go for defining new. I think Electric Affinity and Marine Affinity are likely the best overall sets to be added on the more recent side. While I admit to playing a lot of support, neither set has really clicked for me, but both are on the busy side. I think the best for the others sets are largely set reworks. I think any other of the newer sets fall into the 'fine' category with none of them really hitting any sort of meta in terms of the player base overwhelmingly preferring those sets over other classic sets. Seismic is awful, arsenal is not great, and Storm as you’ve seen is bad. DoctorDitko Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Marine is quite fun. Combos, however, are a pain. I have a Marine/Storm, and remembering to hit both Storm Cell and Tidal Pool at the start of a fight is frustrating. 1 1 Disclaimer: Not a medical doctor. Lockpick Posted October 28 Author Posted October 28 A number of people recommended Marine, so I went with a Water / Marine Corruptor. Thanks for all the replies!

That's pretty much the case with most of the sets, even those released later on in CoH's run while it was still live. Since Sentinels were, AFAIK, only added in the SCORE days, do they count? Seismic and water blast are pretty good. I've only played marine a little, but from what I've experienced, it's quite good. I can't speak to arsenal control or assault...

No, I don't consider most powers that build up additional effects to be hokey. Combo systems are fine, Sentinels are great (usually). I specifically called out Storm Cell as a hokey gimmick because you have to lay out a Location AoE to get effective use of your powers and then it slowly follows you, Another hokey gimmick I dislike is Reaction Time where you get a recharge bonus if you deactivate the power. I love MC as a set, but dislike that type of mechanic. Anyway, I apologize to one and all if I offended anyone with my use of the word "Hokey". I will now go back into my box where I don't post for fear of offending people. 2

TBH, I much prefer storm cell to the frustratingly limited combo system of dual blades. Regardless, give seismic blast a try, (if you haven't already), and i very much like how the HC devs kind of experimented with sentinel SR...

I like Storm Blast. I like Marine Affinity, and it has a similar mechanic - so I'm assuming that you think it has a "hokey gimmick" as well. I like those sets and how they work. Do you need me to go into a big diatribe about why I think they are fun to play? You obviously don't, so that is worthless typing. I can tell you sets I do not like and that is the Assault sets, but this thread isn't about sets I don't like, now is it? Oh, but it does appear to be about sets that you think have "hokey mechanics". I guess that is what this thread was really about as you even list another mechanic that you think is "hokey". Maybe not making snide remarks to people that reply to your posts would be a good idea. High_Beam Posted October 31 Posted October 31 They are all fun. I have a blast with my seismic Blaster and my Storm Blaster, Defender and Corruptor, and my two Marine Affinity and my ARS/ARS Dom. All fun. As for hokey? Building up fury is Hokey, Building up Domination is Hokey, Combos on multiple melee attacks hokey And of course POKEY is hokey. Now a few of the new ones are a bit OP, but that is just my opinion. Girls of Nukem High - Excelsior - Tempus Fabulous, Flattery, Jennifer Chilly, Betty Beatdown, Totally Cali, Two Gun Trixie Babes of War - Excelsior - High Beam (Yay), Di Di Guns, Runeslinger, Munitions Mistress, Tideway, Hard Melody, Blue Aria Many alts and lots of fun. Thank you Name Release For letting me get my OG main back!
