After awhile, they just start piling up from multiple sources.

One way is to take part in the Hami raids.  Those are usually done twice (for 80+40 reward merits, or 4 E merits, or a Hami-O) , sometimes triple.  And normally multiple times a day on at least Everlasting and Excel.

TFs, especially weekly.

The Vahzilok Pollutant Plot flashback give 35 merits for 4 door missions which I think is the fastest to solo (about an hour if you're lazy about it) and the least annoying and accessible at a low level. Set level to -1, run it twice, Grab Luck of the Gambler(+recharge) and sell on AH for a quick 5mil.

If you have a stable of strong 50s and some good macros you can triple box solo Tin Mage tf when it is the WST for 240 merits every 15 minutes.

I just play the game, haven't had to worry over Inf or merits for years now.

Tim "Black Scorpion" Sweeney: Matt (Posi) used to say that players would find the shortest path to the rewards even if it was a completely terrible play experience that would push them away from the game...

What is best way to get reward merits? Farm TF's?  buy super packs?

I get most of mine through super packs.

For me, the funnest way to get merits by fighting in game is hunting Giant Monsters.

But, honestly, if I'm going to buy something with merits, it is with merits that I gained through card packs.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

As near as I can tell, the "baseline" level of acceptable-to-devs direct rate of merits-per-unit-time for solo-play averages to approximately one merit-per-minute.

There are ways to do "better" than this via conversion of other rewards, multi-boxing, alting against the daily/weekly timers, joining late to certain events, etc.

I think the simplest way to accumulate merits with almost no special effort is to repeat the "Who Will Die #1" arc ad nauseum blue side, solo at x1. The first time is for 20 merits, the first repeat during a week is another 20. It takes less than 7 minutes (I've cracked 5 mins several times for full-kits) to do for at-level 20 characters (i.e. "not a level 50"), and is 5 merits each time.

Better be good L50 builds and very good at Triple Boxing because Apex and Tin Mage II TFs are locked at +4 (the only reason they've kept those Reward Merit returns).  Have fun!  😺

The only items that are probably worth using merits to buy and then sell on the AH are some of the winter pieces. Buying that LotG for 50 merits and selling it for 5 million inf is leaving millions of inf on the table compared to just getting 3 converters per merit and selling them at 50k each (which iirc is on the low side).

TL;DR: the exact numbers will vary with AH price changes but generally any enhancement that costs less than 20 million inf on the AH is not worth buying directly with merits.

This is also true for me, but I think that this answer begs the question of why the OP (or anyone) is looking to acquire merits.

Is it simply to get the max number of merits?  Definitely super packs.  But super packs cost inf.

Is it to get as many merits as you can and monetize them in terms or items or inf, either for building out your characters or hoarding?  That's a tougher row to hoe, and if you are just trying to earn inf, I'd suggest other routes.

As I a little surprised that the maximum number of merits a character can hold (in personal inventory) was 9999.... or was I more surprised that the maximum number of Monstrous Aethers was 999? ...anyway... I have yet to hit a cap on Hero Merits.... but after that, there are always Villain merits!

I *was* using the merits to kit out characters(*1), but I'm somewhat slow to alt... so for me the answer is "hoarding".

(*1) Not really recommended, based on typical market prices.

The actual number is 10000, not 9999.  I always try to convert them all to hero merits every time a toon gets over 9000, but capping at 10000 happens more than I would like.  There is no error message when you hit 10K, you just stop getting merits.

Well, you can (presumably) also have 9999 x25 merits in your Character Items inventory.

I'm assuming the 9999 as I have 2357 x25 merits in my email>character items at this point.

I keep using these (or it would be higher than that), but I only pull them out of the email>character items when I need to use them on the character that I'm currently playing that way they don't get "stuck" on a character that doesn't need to buy anything with merits.

My closest to the 9999 cap is converters. I have 9338 of those. I never have even tried using them.

Merits, IMO, are one of those things you want desperately at first, and then, as you keep playing that character, you accumulate more than you can use...

Kinda sorta... Whenever I start a new character I almost always burn merits to provide them the ATO pieces they'll want. If the final build will include Winter pieces in the attacks, I'll usually use a merit purchase for those too. It isn't always the most economical use of Merits, but it is fast. There are IMO a handful of recipes for commonly used pieces that are not a terrible use of merits, but those depend a lot what is in the AH at the time. For example, 20 merits for a lvl 10 Steadfast Protection recipe isn't bad if the AH is out of recipes that won't force a lot of converter roulette.

I definitely think the point made by @biostem stands. I've been funding new alts with a single Hero Merit.

A bit of an outlier here, but my best source of Merits was actually from the HC costume contest 😇

I think I had a couple thousands stored in my global email that I slowy went through converting to converters to IOs, which basically funded my ever growing stable of Incarnate builds...

I have finally almost run out now, so time to go out win another one (*)

Other than that, I hop on GM hunts pretty regularly, which is a fun way to farm rewards and monster merits.

(*) Nowadays they award prismatics and not reward merits anymore, don't know if one is actually better of with those... I have hardly a use for these, I just keep them for the occasional special FX costume if that suits a certain character concept

That incident involving a nuclear accelerator and a banana… You know… I REALLY don't wanna talk about it!
