Discussion: Disabling XP No Longer Increases Influence
arcane replied to Jimmy's topic in General Discussion
It may have been a net positive change for the economy as a whole, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a net negative change for some players. And telling me I don’t know what’s in my own wallet as well as you do because I am apparently stupid and uneducated is truly high arrogance. You are lying to my face and insulting me all at once. I’d prefer you stop. -

Well, based on the replies I got overnight, I see we’re back to dishonest portrayals of our arguments, gaslighting people by implying no nerf ever occurred, and shaming them for not adopting superior playstyles. Great. If this is how you want to treat people, fine. Just be sure you never expect any respect in return. -

I think we had started to establish a dialogue based on mutual respect in the last page or so that you just ended. Sigh. -

I understand that bit and why the nerf did what it did. What Jimmy also said was that people shouldn’t feel they have to farm to get in on the best the game has to offer. If that’s true, is there not some obligation to make sure players don’t have similar feelings about the marketeering playstyle? -

Marketeering has always been surrounded by attitudes of “you can have this too if you just do the work”. Which isn’t wrong. What’s also not wrong is that same attitude but with regards to farming. The only difference? Marketeers’ playstyle isn’t constantly in the crosshairs of the nerfbat. Would I get over it and learn to marketeer if long term in game wealth were my sole concern (disregarding personal play style and fun as factors)? Sure. Does it still suck that my preferred method of accruing a fraction of marketeer wages is the one that always gets the nerfbat? Yes, yes it does. Oh. Well. -

Yeah my problem is I like farming way better, so my only interest in marketeering is in being one of those hyper-rich pros that make more than farmers. So when I get the mediocre returns every beginning investor has to start with, I just get discouraged and go back to my farming day job that at least pays the bills, though slower than any of my rich friends pay theirs. -

Absolutely, I don’t believe inequality is inherently wrong either. Unfortunately, the vessel that was helping me reach new heights in terms of wealth - farming - got nerfed. Consider yourself profoundly fortunate that your preferred method of wealth accrual has been preserved better than mine. -

I don’t know his points, but I will say that, for myself, I’ve tried to follow guides to marketeering several times and found the whole process so tedious and filled with long waits that I ultimately decided I didn’t have the patience/capacity to do it correctly in the way that our dear billionaires do. -

I had 100% of my alts purpled to the teeth before the nerf. As soon as the nerf hit, I lost my patience with the slower rates of return pretty quickly. Now only ~50% of my 50’s have enhancements at all. 😕 -

What has made this issue frustrating for me is having to either (1) farm for many more hours than before per character or (2) gut other completed characters to harvest IO’s, and, all the while, reading threads about it where a group of posters have basically stated that everything is rosy now and anyone that’s got a problem with this change is just stupid and ignorant of basic economics. Again, appreciate the truth. -

I deleted a post that was pretty irate that he might’ve gotten something from. Turns out I get angry when talked down to. Major character flaw on my part. Carry on. -

arcane replied to Jimmy's topic in General Discussion
At the end of the day, as it relates to experience and influence, I care about one single figure: the average amount of my real life time I have to input to yield a maxed out level 50 character. And this change has meant for me: more input for the same output. That’s as clearly a nerf to me as anything can be, and usually people don’t appreciate being told they’d see they’re doing better than ever if only they weren’t too mentally deficient to realize it. -

Thanks for the honesty instead of the “everyone is better off now” gaslighting. -

I’m aware of this. But a lot of people have been insistent that this is a good thing across the board and have thus refused to paint it as a nerf to farmers. Which I firmly still believe it is. Please correct me if I am wrong. -

Cute non-argument but if you’re going to admit you have no support for claiming my personal experience is null and void, maybe don’t be so dogmatic and arrogant about your theories. -

There is zero data behind the assertion that my personal experience is not broadly shared with others. The only way the economy is now better for farmers is if the cost decrease is so dramatic that it matches the income nerf, logically speaking. My experience and that of most I talk to (excluding billionaire marketeers and “I have an economics degree” forumbros) is that we are not there yet. -

Prices are not down enough yet to match the nerf, so yes, there is absolutely pain. In before some economist drops in to tell me my personal experience is guided by plain stupidity and I’m actually wealthier than before in spite of having to gut toons left and right to keep the IO’s flowing at a pre-nerf pace. -
That’s what I thought. I just think ability to solo AV’s with or without temporary powers is an important distinction. Thanks for the clarification.
-
When you guys talk about solo’ing AV’s, just how safe is it to assume temp powers are being used? I have zero interest in solo’ing something my build alone can’t handle, so just curious how pervasive a part of the TF/AV solo’ing culture envenomed daggers and so on are.
-
Anyone that doesn’t have that fear is a dangerous and unstable nut job that should be captured and studied in the lab, if you ask me.
-
This is an important point to elaborate on. Every other MMO I’ve played doesn’t have a 10th of the character diversity CoH has. Take guild wars 2 for instance. The ability to swap skill lines and weapons within a class at will means there was hardly any good reason to make more than 9 characters (9 classes) total. In CoH, I think we discussed that the total number of unique powerset combinations was pretty obscene by comparison. And going back and making things harder for characters when so many of us have dozens can be pretty cruel (the no xp / double inf nerf resulted in me gutting half my characters to keep the IO’s coming at a reasonable rate for newer ones), so we should at least be careful about such things.

You should have way more than 6 T2’s by vet level 20. At least 6 T3’s or a mix of T4’s and T2’s... strictly from AE farming or any other character that does zero incarnate content, you should have enough for all T4’s somewhere in the 40’s. Are you not using anything but threads yet, perhaps? No merits?? This reminds me of something that’s not exactly a pet peeve but that just blows my mind: ever seen a vet level 10+ that isn’t level shifted? Mind-boggling.

Could self flagging for pvp in any zone be a thing?
arcane replied to Llewellyn Blackwell's topic in General Discussion
It’s turned towards courtesy now. It was definitely partially about harassment and bans earlier, hence why I pushed back against the statement that no one expects to be left alone (some people earlier in the thread clearly do believe they have that right). We’re probably on the same page now. -
Not disagreeing with any specific proposal for field medic, but no pool power should ever be as strong as a comparable primary, secondary, or epic power. By design.

I snagged Thundersteel for my new Elec/Shield scrapper about a week ago. Good Riot album. Felt like a generic enough name though I was a little surprised it was open on both torch and indom.
