Hardest Hitting Single Target

JusticeBowler

Recommended Posts

So, if I want to hit one thing, hard, what's the set combo? I don't care about speed, end, survivability, any of that. I don't even want to take AoEs, the fewer the better. I want all the other mobs to just stand there safely in terror at what I'm doing to their friend. I want to look at one foe and know that he's about to expire as fast as the game mechanics allow. What does that look like?

There's a lot about this list I don't understand. Like are these guys tricked out with IOs I can't afford, with things like perma-hasten?

It would seem that some other secondaries add damage (fire, electricity, rad) yet AAO even out performs these one-on-one ... I guess, but how could Super Reflexes? Bio has a number of odd mechanics that look to improve DPS.

Then there's the issue of damage type. PSI theoretically gets best chance of getting through. If a katana strike and a psi attack have equal damage, but the psi attack is 2/3rds PSI it is going to do more effective damage.

Dark Melee and Fire feel like they get a huge advantage here over Lethal in particular, but I assume there are villain groups with very high resistances to these types as well. Maybe not?

And I have no idea how to figure out Kinetic Melee's mechanic. But it looks really good on paper. (thanks for pointing that out, Redlynne)

I am glad to see at least one broadsword up in the mix, I played one for a while and I hated listening to the katana folks talking about how their set was in every way superior and broadsword is just a flop.

One thing is definitely true, there's a lot of poor performers (like ice, ax, and mace which have always been terrible and the devs seem to like them that way because of the minimal mitigation they offer... as someone who ran Ax on his tank I can tell you the mitigation is effectively zero because of the recharge times on mob attack chains.. it feels like you are putting them down but despite the animation of them falling down and getting back up the next swing comes just as quickly).

I certainly have a lot more to think about.

EA can do that as while as you see shield with a top IO build has the recharge the proof is in the results

Those don't have new sets.  Take a look around these boards and see Greater Psi Blade + Insight is probably the hardest Hitting ST attack around.  I bet Ice and Rad Melee could get +200 as well.

Does anyone know what resists a Pylon has?

That's one of the earlier lists that was put together. Incarnate abilities dramatically changed the numbers and rankings. Though Dark and Fire remained at or near the top.

I did know that but in truth incarnates make everything broken

This. Db and stj pulled ahead later on, and eventually stalkers and night widows started to top everything else. Now that there's no redraw options, I would guess the numbers change again a bit.

Also, it wasn't always shield at the top. The recharge in Sr, ea, and elec was helpful. In the current world I think bio armor and rad are promising.

Kezeal from one of the CoH Discord groups is currently compiling a dps spreadsheet between AT and primaries. Read the welcome page, he has link to the CoH Discord group where you can ask him questions.

That is incredible work and I applaud him doing it, but I can't think of anything more useless and it goes exactly to what I've always struggled with when it came to CoH's "tension" between casual and hard core players. Balancing always seems to be about what the twinked out power players with unlimited time and budget can possibly obtain. That's why things like Tar Patch are up less than half the time even ED-max slotted with SOs at lvl 50.

There's no point in calling DM or Fire the winner if they are only a winner when all the power cycles pull the hardest hitting attack chain far outside the range of 98% of the player base. I don't blame the previous dev team or the current folks. In a sense this problem isn't solvable. I'm merely lobbying for things to be bent more towards that end of the base. I'm perfectly aware that doing that might mean that under just the right set of 1 billion IOs a Regen scrapper might again be immortal. I don't care, and like "farming" I really don't understand why anyone would care.

Besides, think about it. If there really is some hero who has worked thousands of hours and honed their knowledge of the game to such an extent to become as powerful as Statesman, maybe it is OK that they are as powerful as Statesman. We are supposed to be their successors after all, right?

Tension, sorry but this game unlike others has little tension between the high end user and the ones that just run SO's. Generally if you are coming to the forums you are looking for that type of information. Sorry I take offense to your post; I know this forum some of us go way back on the scrapper forums to the old days if you come and ask for general advice we give it if you ask high end questions we give it and if I come off like an arse so be it but every game there is always a subset that will maximize everything. The scrapper forum has always been a place for this type of discussion if you do not like it that is on you but do not us.

Yeah if you want general advice we'll give it to you but the Scrapper forumite is usually the type of individual who min/maxes the crap out of their character.

I take this to mean, I should twink or go home, but I don't think you mean that. I think you mean I asked the wrong question. That point isn't without merit. My response ADMITTED that there is ambiguity in the question itself. Hardest hitting means something different to someone with 1 billion influence than it does to someone who got to lvl 50 competently slotted.

While I get your point about my question being "high end" my thought was still about the powerset itself, not the twinked out IO sets that are available that modify (exaggerate) some quirk of the math in the set out of all proportion. You see, if the slots are more significant than the powers, then the real question is "what crazy IOs do you need to hit ridiculously hard." Because the IOs, in the end, will play a greater multiplicative roll in the end than the set itself does.

I didn't mean to cause offense, I didn't even think that was possible. But I see why my additional commentary afterwards could be poorly received.

There is an argument for the IO building being more important than the powerset anyway. I can see a legitimate game design choice saying, "broadsword well slotted should be able to cripple DM less-well slotted"... after all the time and effort to learn the game and earn the influence to buy the IOs and develop one's toon is a significant investment.

At the end of the day slotting is standard and the way to get the most out of the dps is pretty darn simple. The goal is to use your highest Damage per activation powers as many times as possible. There is one common theme recharge and endurance management. That is where IO's really take the it to the next level if you are going strictly SO's your best slotting is 2 acc 3 damage and 1 end (imo)  if you do not hit more than you miss you are in trouble and attacks burn more endurance than people realize.

Then the easiest attack chain with just SO's is probably Martial Arts because 2 attacks have the same DPA and are attacks you want to use so you have 4 attacks and need less recharge so if you are going strictly SO's I would see MA is the easiest way to get a really good attack chain without a lot of recharge and there are a lot of cheap IO's sets where you can IO all 4 attacks for under 20 Million or less (The biggest cost is the orange salvage why I say less because ae tickets are the cheapest way to get orange salvage)

The 4 ST attacks for MA

Storm Kick

Cobra Strike

Crane Kick

Crippling Axe Kick

MA is a nice set and a lot of high end scrapper have play it just because it is all around solid and fun to play
