I admit...I'm a tank. I'm used to having either capped defenses or capped resists (or both 😎).

I've played around in mids, and besides Stone Armor, and Shield, I can't come up with a build that has capped resists or defenses.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on either  a Rad Armor or Dark Armor brute,  but am worried about not getting all my resists or defenses capped.

Guess I need to play around in mids more.

my main is a dark dark brute.  mean as hell.  can tank the Psi Incarnate trials not breaking a sweat.  Can tank anything else with a little management.  Dark uses 2 offensive toggles to stun and fear opponents and is semi stealthed.

Def>Res>Heal right?  Basic Tanking.  Dark Armor Hides (cant hit me you dont see me) and then Mezzes (you wont hit me I dont need def%) and then if it takes a beating Dark/Dark has the best heal in the game on a hair trigger.

You should try super reflexes for capping rng/melee/aoe defense.  Super easy to do.  I guess I'm weird, cause I have trouble figuring out how to cap shield, myself.  Willpower too (although, I love the set).  Hybrid res/def sets just confound me that way, I guess.  🤷‍♂️

On the other hand, I don't really make any effort to soft/hard cap everything.  My toughest tank has S/L resist 90% and everything else is 40%, except Psi, which is a measley 5%.  Yes, I'm aware you can do things to "plug the hole" that Invulnerability has to Psi.  I chose not to, because I think every interesting character should have some sort of Achilles heel.  You can make a tank near immune to most everything, but that would get boring (for me, I mean) pretty quickly.

SR is easy to softcap for all archetypes that use it so you can have room for adding on damres and health. With its scaling resists kicking in as health goes down it can rapidly become a full tilt beast that will survive when you don't expect it.

I'll admit, I've never played SR. I think one of the reasons is because I like having a damage aura.

 I may look into this.

I main SR. I've got three B... Z Bubbas, tank, brute and scrapper. Got a couple SR Sents. A few other SR meleers.

SR is freakishly awesome 95% of the time. After you softcap it. And the rest is Rularuu eyeballs and anything autohit. DAMN YOU, Romulus Autohit Fluffy!!! And leveling up. No fear protection, before softcap you get hit, get hit hard and you feel it.

It's definitely an end game set. Shield is far more forgiving and based on my experiences so far with my shield/em tank, it's just plain numerically a superior mitigation set.

But it ain't and never will be as sexy.

And, yea, you're right, the lack of a damage aura or any kind of damage buff other than quickness's +20% recharge is off-putting.

This is what I do not get lol.  I can run Invul or Dark armors on Tanks or Brutes.  But a pure DEF set?!?  I believe B Z B, I just cannot fathom it lol.  May have to alt into a new concept and try it....

I think part of the point of a Brute is that you do enough damage that you don't need to cap def &/or res.  After all, your enemies can't hurt you if they're dead.

That being said... Mids is a great tool!

I love my dark armor tank-- 90% resistance to basically everything except energy and toxic, 45% defense to all types except psionic. Huge self-heal that's up every 10-14 seconds (didn't go perma-hasten) but my SR/ice tank has a lot to recommend it.  58%+ defense to all positions, 64% S/L resistance, about 42% E/N/F/C and 32% Psi/Tox. Resistance rising substantially as health goes down.  No real self-heal but the call of the sandman proc in frozen aura and an occasional green inspiration is all I've needed for a while.

My dark tank is nearly unkillable to standard enemies but energy damage that does -Def is a real problem, and toxic damage hurts a lot. My SR tank isn't afraid of much in particular, probably a few enemies that get big ToHit buffs (e.g., Rularuu eyeballs, Vanguard sword).  Being able to laugh at defense debuffs is nice, and knowing that sappers and carnies are very unlikely to be a problem is also nice.

Pretty much capped all Resists on an Elec/Elec Brute except Toxic (42.5%) and Negative (57.13%) and I honestly can't say that I don't miss some softcapped defenses.  😛  May just be Cims that make me miss it, as I can feel things crush through that 90% Resist when surrounded.

Since SR is so easy to softcap I drop leadership pool and take sorcery for rune. My SR tank has almost capped s/l and is over 70% on e/n/f/c before any scaling resist kick in 50% of the time. The other half of the time I still don’t get dropped down far enough for scaling resist to begin kicking in.

However, even without rune, I will have capped resists to all except psi and toxic if my health ever did start dropping into dangerous territory.

I honestly think of SR as a hybrid defense/resist set honestly since it is so easy to stack up resistances on it, especially once the scaling kicks in.

I do like shield better though. Shield is just insane.

Heh, I'll put it this way... my SR/Claws tank can continue tanking even with Rom's autohit fluffy beating on him. Even with the game cheating like mad to try to kill me it can't!

It really is. My shield/em tank honestly feels like cheating with godmode turned on. Kinda fun sometimes but overall leaves me just shaking my head that it was allowed to happen.

Its deceptive but invul, Shield, SR, Ice - even willpower aren't capped in every category - at first but with invul and the ATO proc usually every resistance is capped and with invinc saturated defense is softcapped to every type also in a heavy fight.

SR softcap the positional and gets really high when the increased res with lower HP

Ice uses a mixed bag of defenses, resistances - dmg and slows

Shield is positional and decently high resistances.

Willpower - I chose to cap sl and max regen with the help of RTTC saturation.

The res sets are the only ones you definately need to cap res in most if not all categories.

With your dark armor you can cap all categories or get close enough - and if you also get above 45% melee defense it will be awesome.

Aggro Aura, nice level progression, easy to softcap

Isn't it the tanker ATO that adds resist?

I went in a slightly different direction with my Dark Tank.  90% resist, Except to toxic, that at 79%  That with Cardiac Core, no other incarnate powers up.  Pre incarnate is 89.2 s/l 90 energy 86 fire/cold  Defenses are low to mid 20s across the board.  The Tank is a side project because my main is a Dark/Dark Brute focused on Damage.  And is pretty much unkillable.  Once in a great while my Brute will need to heal.  Not often.  and the heal is always up....just sitting there

Pretty much capped all Resists on an Elec/Elec Brute except Toxic (42.5%) and Negative (57.13%) and I honestly can't say that I don't miss some softcapped defenses.

@BrandX, would you mind posting that build or PM'ing it to me? Regardless of defenses, I am sure your build is better than the hodgepodge I have been able to come up with myself for my elec/elec brute.

After a couple tough experiences lately (some teams ...wow lol.  They do not get that +4/x8 has to be approached with a plan.  Everyone sees it in AE and thinks every team should run this every mission) I have revised my Main's build to get Rune of Protection.  The build is tighter.  Tankier.

But Dark/Dark WILL fold under enough pressure.  Pressure that an Invul Brute would most likely not fold under.  But Dark has Soul Transfer.  An insanely powerful Rez that recharges in less than a minute and a half on my build.

Still, Bruting instead of Tanking is about more than "how much damage can I take?"  Bruting is a commitment to the sloppy ROFLSTOMP team style that Redsiders invented.  Tanking is built for militant by the numbers, line up in an orderly fashion to be killed style.  Either AT can do either style.  But Brutes revel in the former and Tanks glory in the latter.
