How to search the old COH forums at the WayBackMachine?

Is there an easy way to search the old COH forums over at the WayBackMachine? Maybe someone wrote a guide?

I hate to ask, but I've been googling and trying things out, and I just can't seem to get it to work. I'm probably missing something simple.

Looks like whoever took the screencaps no longer links to the Way Back Machine. I don't know of anyone who still has copies of the original forums. At least legally.

Being constantly offended doesn't mean you're right, it just means you're too narcissistic to tolerate opinions different than your own.

You might give this a look

The first phase of that project is complete. I have all of the files. But nobody seemed terribly interested in helping me with Phase 2 - linking the files together to make it a fully linked site. So I gave up.

You can have a copy of the files if you want to mail me a thumb drive.

Ironically, the total file SIZE of all the files is hardly anything, but my machine at least has some issues with the sheer NUMBER of tiny HTML files.

It breaks Windows Explorer, heh.

I'm out.

I thought the issue was coming up with the process and server related issues?

No, I could setup the process to parse the files and create an index, and then start to link the pages, but after I released Phase 1, it landed with a resounding "thud", so... I'm not going to work on it anymore unless a group of people comes to me and asks for it, willing to help along the way. It's a waste of my time to work on a project that nobody but me seems to care enough about to put any effort towards.

I still have the actual files, if anyone wants a copy.

I'm out.

oh,  i didnt realize the project had been discontinued.  I only discovered it after that initial work was nearly completed and read the first post and then the last bit about the problem files.

The project is on indefinite hiatus due to the reason stated above. The "problem files" have been fixed. All of the files are fine now, they just need to be linked up to be searchable. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Sadly, I'm still relegated to a laptop and currently hotel wi-fi which skips more than a 6yo in a park jumping rope.

Dislike certain sounds? Silence/Modify specific sounds. Looking for modified whole powerset sfx?

Check out Michiyo's modder or Solerverse's thread.  Got a punny character? You should share it.

Here's an update... Talked to the guys over at the WayBackMachine and apparently what I read misled me to believe they had a search engine up and running. Turns out it's only for a very few archives, and those do not include the old COH forums. So there's no way to search the WayBackMachine.  At least we can still browse the old forums.

This stokes an even greater admiration for many of my fellow COH players. I've asked questions, and people have answered with links to the original COH forums. They actually had to go browsing for the link. That's a lot of effort, and a lot of kindness. I know I've said it before, but thanks guys.

Looks like the only way to search the old COH forums is to take @The Philotic Knight up on his generous offer and grab a copy of the old COH forums from him. Be warned, that tiny 90 GB compressed file turns into 800 GBs of data!  Make sure you have enough room on your hard drive.  And thanks gain, TPK, I appreciate all the hard work you and your team did to grab these files.

Using your own file search app along with the old COH forum files is a great research tool. You might not be able to browse the files, click from web page to web page, but you can still find the pages you need and even follow a thread if you need to.  Pretty cool. 🙂

P.S. Here's a link to the old COH forums at the WayBackMachine that I use... there are other links for other dates, FYI. https://web.archive.org/web/20121108232155/http://boards.cityofheroes.com/

I have self taught myself a bunch of stuff to do with tech, web design etc. and have some time here and there - Would what you're asking around linking the files together be something that would be difficult? or is it just time consuming? Are you still hosting a site somewhere?  If it's something you want to pursue and can host, I'd be willing to discuss what would be needed and see if I am capable of doing with my skill set so far or if it's something I could learn over a few weeks on my own so it would be achievable or let you know if it was just not something that I could do.

Thanks. I am looking for a thread where people posted different character pictures and artists would change them to match the desired design.
