2023 Homecoming Base Contest

Hello!

It’s CR Dacy and your friendly base-hopping CR Easter Bunny here to announce that the HC Base Building Contest has returned!

And it’s right here! You’re reading about it RIGHT NOW!

As before there is no theme, alignment or shard requirement. Nearly all bases are welcome! (See Fine Print for details)

Bases will be judged in one of three categories that are divided by item count, for a total of six winners! Plus, the return of the Community Choice Winner! The 2023 categories are:

• RP Base Over 7K Items
• RP Base Under 7K Items
• Utility Center Over 7K Items
• Utility Center Under 7K Items
• Multipurpose Base Over 7k Items
• Multipurpose Base Under 7k Items
• Community Choice Winner

– An RP base is one where the purpose of the base is to provide context, story, or setting for RP; either no services or minimal services are provided.
– What we're defining as a Utility Center is a functional base where the focus is on the convenience and services a base can provide. However, for this contest, how it's presented should be cosmetically pleasing and coherent.
– A Multipurpose Base is a base where full services are provided, but RP is also provided for, and base functions are integrated into the design accordingly. This base would need to meet the considerations for both the service-oriented base and the RP-specific base.

Winners will be awarded a total of 5,000 merits, which will be divided among contributors if there are more than one, and the golden title "2023 Base Building Champion" for all involved (up to 5 for each winning entry, including the base owner). Base owners also win if they are not the builder, and base builders also win if not the owner, provided said participants did not enter a separate base. (Fine Print).

How to Enter

Bases must be submitted by the Base owner (the character with the red star in the member list). Please post in this thread with the following in order to enter:

• Your character name (the character with the red star).
• Your Global handle.
• Your base’s name.
• The shard it is located on.
• The passcode for entering the base.
• The Base Category you are entering under.
• The item count of your base. Full item count can be determined by clicking Upgrade Plot from the entrance room or by typing /editbase 3 while in your base. If you like, post a screenshot of your item count to be sure it's the correct one.
• The character names or Global handles of any members that contributed to building the base; up to a maximum of five, including yourself (don't forget to credit the Builder if different from the Owner!).
• Only one base submission per person (Please refrain from entering under multiple accounts – there will be more contests).

The judging panel will consist of your Base Building Community Reps (Dacy and I) and the previous Winners and Finalists from the last HC Base Building Contest in 2020 (should they decide not to enter this year's contest with a different base).

After the deadline passes, the judges will take some time to go through and score each of the entries using a rubric (attached below) so that each base is evaluated as fairly as possible. Depending on the number of entries this may take some time. We'll do our best to work through them as quickly as possible!
Once the highest scoring bases have been determined we will reach out to the owners to arrange tours for a guided look at the finalists. After the tours have been completed, we will compile the top scoring bases for the consideration of the Community Choice award. Once that winner is chosen by community vote, we will announce all of the winners and award prizes.
Please note, we'll not be taking any tours with individual players before this phase, so please add any extra info you would like to the post if you have hidden areas or something you don't want us to miss!

The Fine Print - the land of ifs, ands and buts

• The only bases ineligible for this contest are the Runner-Ups, Finalists and Winners of the 2020 HC Base Contest (Gold Title winners). All other bases are fair game and welcome!
• For those builders that do contract work or are involved in group projects: You can only enter one base and be entered to win with one base. If you happen to have worked on another base, and someone involved with that base enters it, you do not get to share in their spoils should they win. You must choose which one base you want to represent you and your chances to win. 
• Similarly, for our judging panel: Judges are unable to directly enter their own work. But their clients or other owners of a base may still enter bases that were built, all or in part, by a member of the judging panel. In this situation a judge may not score their commissioned work. A GM (thank you @GM Willow!) has volunteered to step in as guest-judge in the event that a judge must recuse themselves from an entry. Should the judge's entry score well enough to place among the High Scores their base would still be ineligible for the 2023 Base Building Champion Title, and will instead only be eligible for the Community Choice poll.

Lastly, as referenced above, a copy of the judging rubric has been attached to this post so that it's clear what we judges will be looking for in your beautiful works of art!

Additional Info / Must-See Areas of Note: The Hall of Heroes is on an island off the coast of Rhode Island. Non-powered visitors are able to utilize the Paragon City ferry service to arrive.

Upon arrival to the Hall of Heroes, visitors are immediately greeted by the large outdoor plaza. Food vendors line the lower sides of the raised fountain platform which itself serves as a memorial to fallen heroes (also a nice spot for CCs :P).

The main floor inside the Hall of Heroes contains a lounge, museum and training simulator. The main entrance is also lined by two elevators; one to the bottom floor which houses a cafeteria, training room and library; while the upper floor contains offices for the leaders of the Global Defense Force and New Defenders as well as a meeting area. Behind the meeting area is a secure access elevator to the secret base below the Hall of Heroes which contains a large medical bay, hangar and workshop/teleport hub for the GDF/ND heroes.

Additional Info / Must-See Areas of Note:  *Saracen Armories is located in the Old Sloth section of Kalisti Wharf.  It is the manufacturing and repair center for Black Friday's featured services known as "The Limited."  Producing, custom weapons, armor, and equipment for all patrons and VIP members.  From creation of special devices to the repair and restoration of vintage firearms, and personal equipment Saracen Armories does it all.*  (Note that the owner operators home is above the shop.  Special interest in the CNC machines as they are also Enhancement Storage racks.  If you need an Enhancement or help filling out a Build this is what the actual purpose is. )

Notes for those viewing (Screenshots for visual):
Edit: A jetpack or flight powers is recommended for exploring a specific section of the base.  This is meant to imitate swimming in the specific section.  Not required, at all, but adds to the effect intended for that specific section of the base.

 

There is a "hidden/ooc" portal to the south after entering the base and stepping into the area that leads directly to the "capital" part of the base.  This was put there for quick travel from base entrance to the main city for RP purposes/etc - 

 

There is also a portal to the "Champion Chambers" within the city that is often overlooked by some.  It is marked by a flag in front of a door -

Additional Notes: Flight is not necessary, but may be desired. There is tele points to and from ground. Nothing is hidden, per se, but there are a lot of nooks and crannies. Most of the staterooms 'tell a story' about their occupant. 

This SG base is meant to tell the story of a ship rendering aid in a time of cataclysm; there are depictions of death on the ground.

Additional Info / Must-See Areas of Note: The primary method of seeing areas in this base is by doorways. They will just be open doorways, and need to be walked through to enter new rooms. However, certain other areas are accessible via teleporters hidden into surfaces that look like doors. Some of these are decently well-hidden. This base will be most easily shown off via base tour as there is a lot of twists and turns.

The base itself is a Vampire run Industrial/Metal Goth nightclub. It is heavily inspired from Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, and World of Darkness. While also serving as a nightclub, it is also a well protected sanctuary for vampires and their kindred to work with one another under the watchful eye of Baroness Eris, a tall and foreboding vampire figure having lived a great, yet unknown, number of years with one goal in mind. Raise their kind from the ash and shadow, and eliminate the Brotherhood of the Moon, a rival clan of werewolves.

Easily missed locations/Must-Sees:
A - The door directly to the left of the entrance portal has a teleporter to access an apartment that's a well detailed portion of the base.
B - In through the main door of the nightclub, directly to the right, behind the bar, is a hallway. This hallway leads to a great many areas, but through the hallway, there is another doorway on the right entering into a secondary lounge/bar area that's a must-see.
C - In the area directly mentioned in B, there's teleporter doors to a rainy side street with a truck. Check the back of the truck for a super secret teleporter. 😉
D - Back on the main dance floor, up on the stage, there's a doorway that leads into an office area backstage. Continue through this area until you reach a set of stairs leading up to a teleporter door. This teleporter door leads to a main office, that's a well detailed portion of the base.
E - In the main office mentioned in D, there's a teleporter door to a bedroom. In the bedroom, there is a hidden teleporter behind a plant, that leads down into a whole secret crypt area.

I beleive it's one entry per person/SG Leader.

 

There's a bit of gray area / wiggle room in the event of multiple people contributing the the build of a base. Like, if you've helped three people build thier bases, and they all enter, you'll be entitled to a share of the spoils if any of them win. EDIT: See Dacy's reply! But you don't get to enter someone elses base on their behalf if you're not the SG leader.

 

@Dacy or @Easter Bunny could probably clarify or correct me on this.

I need to correct this: you can only enter one base and be entered to win with one base. If you happen to have worked on another base, and someone involved with that base enters it, you don’t get to share in the spoils with that. You have to choose which one base you want to represent you and your chances to win.

This differs from the first Homecoming base contest in that, you could only enter with one base, and that meant that if there was another base, owned by someone else, that you worked on, they were now ineligible to enter that base. In our 2023 contest, a builder may have worked on multiple bases that are entered, but may only win with the one they choose to enter with.

Originally designed as a ruins setting discovered buried on the outskirts of St. Martial's, this base quickly grew into a memorable echo of a realm long lost to the Tirikan refugees of Prime. Over the span of about 9 months, this has been worked on, edited, adjusted, and revamped as the story unfolded of how these ruins emerged buried within an archaeological dig some 17 miles from the central reaches of St. Martial's and the Rogue Isles. Temporally displaced, and ravaged by time, these ruins had been slowly restored by several temporal specialists, unraveling a sealed door that held behind it a number of surprises for the Tirikan, and their allies. That seal was broken and the surprises contained within unleashed on Prime - but not without it's own price for the Tirikan race. The Refugees of Pellea now inhabit these ancient foreign halls, living, and working as any other citizen of Prime now does. But this base is only a small fragment of their expanded history. Admittedly, I never thought I'd submit this, didn't think it was worth a glance by some of the pro builders I've seen here, but after some encouraging words from my RP circle and long time friends, I submit The Pellean Sanctum, as my personal base submission for the competition. May the best shine with pride. The base is open for exploration, I ask those that wish to RP in it, to please be polite and remember this is the home of many of the tirikan refugees that fled to Prime from their universe, and be considerate. *bows formally with a gesture to explore freely.*
