Awwhh.. shame. I have too much of a sensitivity to bright screens to read on them for any extended period of time.

Amazon Kindle and Kobo e-readers have the ability to invert the screen with an all black background and white text.  I use that.  It's really nice to have hundreds or even thousands of ebooks on one device that's built specifically for reading, where you control the colors, font size, and even the fonts themselves.  I much prefer ebooks to print books these days, especially with my older eyes.

Oooh, I didn't know that! Interesting.. neat-o! I've never had a Kindle, only the cheap e-reader tablets.

I have old man eyes, E-Readers allow me to read more comfortably.

But if I could I would read physical.

E-Readers have been my saving grace.  I used to carry a book with my everywhere.  But my frequent problem is that I'd be near the end of my book, so now I have to carry two.

My Kindle holds dozens of books at a time.  Saves me so much weight in my purse, not to mention bent pages and stuff when my bag gets jostled.

If you read a lot and can afford it, an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Libra 2 is very worth it.  It'll pay itself off easily for how much easier it makes reading with aging eyes, and it takes up so much less space.

They also didn't show ads.

Welllll... not only are front and end ads for other books and such pretty common, but pick up any late 19th century book, usually tech/trade/nonfic, and look at alllllll the pretty ads at the end.

Or get taken away if the publisher or bookstore decided you shouldn't have it, or didn't pay for a Reading Subscription.

Welllll... let's not go there in here, but.

Or get sanitized based on "modern values." Well, at least any moreso than the edition you currently own. 😜

I can't remember what 1950s author had a vistor who exclaimed, "Mr. Smith, Hollywood has just ruined your books!" He turned in his chair to look at the shelf behind him, and said, "They all look fine to me."

I got the Amazon Fire HD on sale (the one without ads)

The Kindle app is great, and I get Amazon Prime videos and Netflix 🙂

Any decent tablet is more flexible, unless you want to read a LOT of Kindle books and in bright light.

The problem with Kindle etc. being that Jeffy can reach out and take books away from you. OTOH, it's of benefit that I can update any of my books and they're pushed automatically to all previous buyers.

I have the Kindle reader on my smartphone a and use the black background. Comfortable and elegant.  I only use it for casual reading though, and occasional material that I must reference often. If I intend to keep a book or share it, I buy the physical copy.  But the smartphone Kindle reader has been great for lunchtime.

Reading's great. I like reading books. Prefer that to e-reader crap.. gives me a headache.

😞

I agree with you on most points, but in recent years I've discovered that pulling down some disposable novel, from bed, at midnight, for free, from the library has its charms.

I have a tablet for web browsing and for reading digital comic books, magazines, and PDFs.  I also have two e-readers for reading books.  A tablet isn't the same.  An e-reader has a nicer screen for book reading, it's more portable than a tablet, it doesn't need to be charged for weeks, and it's specifically designed for reading with no notifications from other apps disturbing you.

As for advertisements, I have never seen any on any of the e-readers I have owned.

About seven years ago my house flooded and I lost almost every book I have.  For that reason I deal mostly in ebooks now.  I vastly prefer physical, paper books but I can't go through that again.

Horizon Twilight, The Chernobyl Effect, XLR Mk8, Dodgeball, and a host of other alts all hanging out on Everlasting.

It's amazing how a bit of mold can just remove the emotional attachment to a book. 😄

I wish it was just mold.  I really do.  I do still have a copy of Shogun that only got some mold spots on the outside edge, and some fantasy books that happened to be in a cardboard box on a high shelf in the garage.

Unless they're in the public domain and from somewhere like Project Gutenberg.  Over 70,000 free books available at gutenberg.org

Plenty of classics like Arthur Conan Doyle and Edgar Allen Poe.

I have so many books that I started making my own bookmarks. The first one I asked the bead shop owner to make, the second one I made for my sister.

Amazon can, and has, erased books off of Kindles before. And they've even done it without informing the owners.

And how long until your books get rewritten by the adherents of "Current Year Ideology"?

How long before you're forced to watch ads on your Kindle?

How long will you be able to read your Kindle beside the fireplace when the power's been out for 3 days?

My books ignore ALL of those problems.

Being constantly offended doesn't mean you're right, it means you're too narcissistic to tolerate opinions different than your own.

Well, on a general reader. Kindle doesn't sideload books easily or well. (The ballyhooed "Kindle reads EPUB!" deal of a year or so ago is a technical shuck with many problems.)

Wouldn't argue; the paper-white screens in particular are nice in all lighting and the readers have crazy battery life. But I long ago set out to minimize the pile of Absolutely! Essential! Junk! and a decent Samsung tablet is more than good enough a reader for me.

(I could add that I am an e-publishing specialist when not wearing my spandex armor. 🙂 )

*looks up over Classic Rock Magazine*

Keep it down, you kids, I'm reading about the history of Powerslave and Two Minutes To Midnight. Which is only 90 seconds these days. That's inflation for you.
