Well, one of the spiritual successors, Ship of Heroes, is supposed to be launching within the next two months.

I think there's failure to look at the big picture here and/or putting all your eggs in one basket going on.

 

The CoH servers, all of them will die off. When? Can't say as im not sure. But they most assuredly will. There isn't even a guarantee there'll be more, or at least more of substance.

 

Successors, while on the surface look like they'd be superflous now, actually could very well be crucial down the line.

Not to mention that there's 25 years of technical debt in the City of Heroes code base.  Some modern computers (even ones with discrete graphics cards), struggle to run City of Heroes thanks to the game's technical foundations being so old.
