MiDs continues it's years long downhill slide

so, MiDs tells me it needs to update i update

 

then it tells me errors are everywhere

 

i delete, reinstall "the latest"  which twlls me there is an update, but never actually updates, and the new sets are not in the program

As I recall, there as a mids update that was so bugged that you couldn't just "uninstall" you needed to go into your files, find the folder that it created, and delete it to make sure your computer had no memory of that installation at all.

There was a bug in the bootstrapped, but the version of mids you're using can't update the bootstrapped, which is why its erroring out.

 

I don't know why the website hasn't been updated yet, but it hasn't.

It's free. I'm glad it works at all, even if sometimes I have to redownload or uninstall to get it to work.

i tried deleting everything and reinstalling.  twice.  i might be missing something.  also, why does the "latest" version immediately tell me there is a "new" version?

I got a new laptop last year, and for some reason I was unable to download Mids on it.  Curses!  And then I started using paper and pencil.  Good times.

Last time I tried a fresh Mids install (on a newly imaged laptop; about two weeks ago) it was a case of:

(i) Download Mids
(ii) Ensure I've got the Microsoft DotNet bits installed (DotNet 8.0 Desktop Runtime and DotNet Framework 4.8) and the latest Visual C++ redistributable.
(iii) Run Mids (by opening the executable "MidsReborn.exe" directly; not by opening an associated file)
(iv) Within Mids, do a check for Updates.

At this point it downloaded the update; then errored out with a whinge that it couldn't extract something. I found a zip file in my Mids Hero Designer folder that contained the new bootstrapper files (MRBBootstrap.exe and MRBBootstrap.pdb) so I extracted it manually over the top of the original files.

(v) Run Mids again.
(vi) Within Mids, do another check for updates.

This time it found a new Database file; and the new bootstrapper kicked in and downloaded it successfully (the download screen looks a bit flashier than the old one).
Mids then autolaunched properly.

(vii) Within Mids, do another check for updates.

This time it reported there were no updates.

(viii) Perform various manual amendments to the Mids database to fix incorrect values and pet/pseudopet buffs that don't display properly in the UI (urrrgh...)

So… grateful I am passed mathematically perfect builds.  Because MiDs now requires all the above.  
 

My builds these days are thematic, with build goals stated in broad terms and not meticulously tracked. 
 

It is a shame I have lost the tool. Used to be good.

@Snarky I noticed in my mids folder a zip fil called bootstrapper. I extracted it and ran mids update and it worked. Maybe you have the same issue?

could not find that  found this, which seemed open a;ready.  i "ran" it.  nothing happened

I guess it's time a variant of this semi-annual post: I stopped trying to use MIDS many years ago (circa Dec 2020?) because the overhead (in terms of both local and networked connections) became too much for my taste. I can understand the inertia trying to keep this thing together, but it should have been refactored years ago. I'm sorry that the folks who want to keep using it have so much trouble with something that ought to be as relatively easy as an update/install, but from the outside this looks to be just one more piece of evidence that this effort needs a serious rework. Even if maintaining/updating it is a hobby... I think it is probably at the point where the hobby needs to level up.

Slightly disingenuous considering it's a volunteer project run by people who have to build on what's gone before and collate their data from multiple sources.

 

Yes it can be periodically problematic but IMNSHO it's an invaluable took that helps me enjoy the main game immensely.

I'm not sure how long ago Mids broke for me, but the time when I got it working, I accidentally deleted my HC folder as well.

Been plinking at it since it broke again, but honestly I'm at the point I'd rather just write a tool that looks at a build to translate to more readable by me.

Then I'll play on one of the beta servers.

 

And I run Linux, so it's even more glitchy.
