It's not STJ/Regen but I hope it gives you some perspective on what you can do when you focus on a finite number of goals and really build for them. I took whirlwind for the lulz initially but kept it because 1) lulz and 2) it's actually not too shabby. If you look at the totals you will see that it's softcapped to S/L at the very least (among other things). If you look at the totals for your build you will see your S/L is at around 16% which doesn't really help you too much survival wise. You have a bunch of toxic/psi resist bonuses from slotting the 6 piece of the purples sets and doctored wounds but you have to ask yourself are those bonuses really meaningful? The one thing I will note though, is that when you build for defense you will sacrifice recharge bonuses, so it's not without drawbacks. However, lower level content is usually fairly easy and having softcapped defenses while exemped down will be much more noticeable than having uber recharge. The end game has incarnate tools to fill in the recharge gap.
  2. It gets a little bit more complex and as I noted in my post, you need to focus on your priorities and then weigh the efficiency of how you have things slotted. A good exercise is to focus on a single priority such as building for S/L defense and process/slot every power you have with that priority in mind. This way you can get exposed to all the sets that offer S/L defense and in the process get an idea of the sets that offer the best "bang for the buck" in terms of slot efficiency. If a set can get you 3.75% S/L defense at 4 slots and another set get your 2.5% S/L defense at 6 slots, well, I think you know which one is more efficient. At the end of that exercise you will probably have built a character way over the S/L softcap so now move to the second phase and make some cuts to your slotting and start looking at how you can leverage those cuts to fulfill your secondary goals.
  3. You made the mistake, as many posters do, of slotting full sets into your powers
  4. Don't forget slow/-recharge resist. It's a big deal for regen.
  5. It all comes down to focus and understanding that you can't spread you goals out and try to cover all the bases. Let's set a goal as practice: I want to build towards S/L softcap and be able to squeeze in a modest amount of recharge so that I can get close to perma-hasten And we are going to slot crushing blow which is a melee attack You have a few choices here: If you are going to focus on S/L softcap since that is a priority you should be looking at Kinetic Combat as 4 pieces of that set offers the highest S/L defense out of all the other "normal" IO sets (excluding the superior versions of the winter set and ATO). Kinetic combat has 5 pieces for the full set and what does that 5th piece get you? 7.5% move speed. Does that align with your priorities? nope, cut. Then you look at the enhancement values with 4 pieces of kinetic combat. The ACC value is abysmally low so mental note, I probably should stick another slot in there to bring ACC and perhaps damage up, maybe a Nucleolus hami-O. If you are going to chase the secondary goal which is recharge then hecatomb is a good contender. 5 pieces gets you 10% global recharge, great! What does the 6 slot offer? 6% toxic/psi resist? Is it nice to have? Possibly, does it align with your priorities? nope, cut. Now let's move onto another example that is a bit more complex, same goal: This time we are going to slot Hardened carapace which is a resist shield Resist powers take the gladiator armor or steadfast protection 3% defense uniques so you can potentially slot both here and still have 4 remaining slots to work with. Of the resist sets two offer S/L defense at 4 slots. Reactive armor and Unbreakable Guard. Unbreakable actually has a higher value BUT... Reactive also provides energy/neg energy defense at 3 slots in addition to S/L defense at 4 slots. Energy/neg defense might be a tertiary goal since you have a defense shield for those damage types so now you have to decide whether you want to spread your focus out and try to cover your other goals. Scrutinize each power and process slotting of these powers that way and eventually you'll see that there are only a few sets that can get you to your goal. If you go for the extreme and process every power for S/L defense then you may end up with a build that exceeds the S/L softcap. Great! now make some cuts and look for ways to achieve your secondary goal. FYI fire/cold defense is tremendously easy to softcap if you use winter sets. Energy/neg defense is going to be much harder. S/L defense is somewhere in between.

Correct, don't forget to slot end redux in your attacks as well. It comes easier with sets but if you are just on generic IOs they make a big difference.
  7. I made a staff/regen Brute with whirlwind. Highly recommend if you know what you are doing because it's hilarious and meme worthy. However for sane people I'd say maybe staff/invuln, more so because of the +to hit from invincibility than any other factor. As much as I love the breakdancing it feels bad when that breakdance whiff whiff whiffs.

No defensive sweep. I leveled it as it is presented but that's also because I had the IOs I needed for the build and the early levels go by pretty fast. You certainly don't need it for the end game. However I can make a case for taking it for the budget minded players. It has a much shorter recharge and it provides stack-able defense and it's an AoE, so that's a win/win/win for beginners. Level 28 is the level that your end situation will start to change, when you get energize spend the next level maximizing it's recharge and try to get it perma. Then level 35 comes along and you'll be golden with energy drain and can then burn a respec and redirect your slotting (maybe you put extra slots in stamina, maybe you invested in miracle and numi uniques, etc...) and focus your priorities elsewhere.

Hit 50 and with all the IOs in place that got me to softcap levels and Big Panda handles like a beast... Held off the nictus dwarf/nova ambush on a +4/8 ITF with no level shift just fine, the constant KD from TW really helped a lot and the FF procs helped accelerate energize and drain energy to help sustain my HP and buffer my defenses against the nova blasts. Incidentally I tried a +4/8 S/L farm and it performed fine as well. The heal proc is laughably inconsequential in energy drain (I was hoping it would proc multiple times off multiple enemies annnnd nope, it procs just once) so I replaced it with another efficacy adapter Endmod/Endredux IO for a slight HP bump. Overall impressions - not a strong starter out the gate (slow recharging attacks, end hog, low survival capabilities), gets beastly with IO investment. Energize helped with end issues and energy drain completely eliminated it and those are the transformative levels in the journey up to 50. TW/BIO appears to be the fotm but TW/EA with it's DDR, end management tools, a relatively passive non-click intensive secondary, and recharge boost make it a very complimentary pairing and I'm honestly surprised not more people are rolling this combo. Final build highlights: Perma Hasten with FF procs even without agility Incarnate softcap with saturated energy drain and shadow meld on top of that 50% S/L resist 100% slow resist 51% DDR And as with all my builds, speed TF running machine by level 30. 10. There have been a few titan/bio posts if you dig further back in the brute forum. Everyone has their particular tastes and you can get a general idea of how people build theirs and apply it to your own. There are some basic game mechanics you need to understand. Defense values - https://dechskaison.blogspot.com/2011/01/why-is-softcap-so-important.html Procs - Download mids, you probably have done so already, and start familiarizing yourself with sets and set bonuses. Have a short list of goals when you approach a build, and sort those goals order of priority. Goals like "I want to be survivable and do damage" are meaningless and offer no direction. Bio armor already features armors that offer typed defense so it makes sense to build for typed defense so goals like "I want to reach close to 45% defense to smashing/lethal/fire/cold/energy/negative damage on and be able to leverage force feedback procs to boost hasten to perma level with incarnate help" is much more tangible. Being able to construct goals like this requires some basic understanding of game mechanics hence the required reading material above. Another thing, don't forsake damage for set bonuses. For example titan weapon does knockdown and there are people that will slot knockback sets in the attacks. Besides the fact that those sets offer pretty bad bonuses they also don't enhance the damage as much as real damage sets do. Similarly I see people slotting dark melee attacks with to-hit debuff sets and they complain about not doing enough damage. Well duh! Slot attacks with damage sets. Also, don't make the mistake of slotting full sets as I see a lot of posters do - full set doesn't mean best. Unless you have loads of influence and know the exact final build you want, no build materializes overnight so approach it in phases. When you are just starting you are not going to get that billion inf perma hasten softcapped to S/L/E/F/C dream build so start on the attributes that's going to make the biggest impact first. Smashing/Lethal are the most common damage types in the game so getting your defenses closer to the softcap will dramatically improve your survival so let's work on that first using affordable IOs. Then look to move to the next phase and work on improving your recharge, defense to other types of damage, better endurance management, etc, in whatever order of priority that's important to you. You will burn a few respecs along the way, but if you go through this process you will become one of those build pros in no time.
  11. It helps to understand what your playstyle is: Do you prefer to stay at range or do you have no fear getting up close and smashing face? There are a few posts about fire/elec and most lean towards smashing face

  14. I'm just imagining the times when you are traveling from mob to mob and BU fires during travel and expires before you reach the next mob but if it works for you I'm not going to stop you, not that I can anyways 😁 For anything/eng I still recommend setting energize on auto because it's your endurance management tool, if you forget to fire it off you will notice the difference in how fast your blue bar drops very quickly. Regarding min/maxing, I'm trying to build something within the OPs means and hence I skipped most of the uniques. You'll notice I even omitted the gladiators armor defense unique. depending on how impatient you are you might end up paying 1.5-2 mil per cheap IO and those add up. Of all the IOS the LoTG 7.5, steadfast unique, Numina Unique, and the Basilisk Gaze IOs are going to be the most costly. I don't disagree on your take on rune of protection, you can go either way and squeeze out a little more set bonuses or be practical and focus on enhancing your bread and butter powers like BU and Aim more. There is always room for improvement, but this should serve as an affordable decent starter build that enables the OP to work up to the dream build.
  15. Putting buildup or aim on auto is ill advised for any build. Build up and aim are on demand damage/to hit boosts. You use them when you need them, right before you engage a mob for the alpha strike or when Paragon Protectors use MOG for example. I'd also take both relatively early if you are not being PLed and plan to exemp down often to do lowbie content. They are game changers at lower levels when everyone else is struggling with efficient end usage because their accuracy is crap. I have fond memories of my level 8 elec/energy blaster going to hollows and two shotting clumps of 8+ outcasts with a build up or aim ball lightning + short circuit. Without build up or aim? It would take me magnitudes more time and debt to accomplish that at that level. With energy manip you'll want energize on auto as that will solve your end issues completely. The heal is incidental and with dark you have another heal anyway if you need some thing more on demand. The 3 slots in rune with titainium coating is for the HP bonus and the energy/neg eng resist. The last aegis is to top off the recharge. It's a nice panic button that's also a free breakfree but if you don't want to invest in getting it to recharge faster you can absolutely dump those slots in build up/aim for more bang for the buck.
  16. You really don't need aid self, the animation time will kill you more often than not in situations where you REALLY need a heal, ducking out of line of sight or out of melee reach and popping inspirations is easier than stop moving completely for 3+ seconds to use an interruptible heal. If you build typed defense to the level where you reach softcap/near softcap defenses against S/L/E/F/C then you only holes are neg energy, where you should be sitting around low-mid 30% defense which is fairly respectable, and psi, where you are probably sitting at mid-high teens. Pure neg and psi damage is not all that common and the ones that feature pure psi you are going to have a tough time anyways even on a ranged defense build because the nasty ones that disable you are untyped. Far more important to blaster survival aside from defense is mastering the art of movement and inspiration management, and using your mitigation tools. I posted a few videos in this thread to demonstrate what I mean.
  17. The combination is never going to be decent at farming so let's focus on regular content instead. If you want to stay at range and hover blast pick a resist shield and build for ranged defense. As long as you are committed to staying in range that is all you need. Even if you don't plan on getting into melee the melee attacks are good mules for range defense and HP bonuses and I highly recommend you mule one or two just for that. You don't need to slot stamina or any of the recovery uniques, as long as energize is up you won't ever have end issues. Here is what a budget build within your means might look like. 18. Rather than building for ranged and s/l defense, you can continue building for typed defense since scorpion shield already offers typed defense. You can reach softcap/near softcap levels on S/L/F/C/E and that will make you plenty tough. Side benefits of going this route is that you will have a healthy amount of F/C resist, sacrifice less for other bonuses such as recharge, and have a healthy amount of slow resist which people don't appreciate until their recharge is neutered. 19. Turn vorpal off. The defense bonus it gives last only 10 seconds so it's not dependable. S/L is easier to softcap with scorpion shield especially if you use both defense uniques and are able to fit maneuvers and weave along with either hover or combat jumping into your build. Getting ranged defense up there while keeping the s/l softcap takes a lot more work. You will be investing in thunderstrike set IOs and the blaster ATOs heavily and most likely will dip into blessing of the zephr sets as well, and that will cut into how much recharge bonuses you can stack. If you don't plan on being in melee range at all as /dev normally doesn't then the alternative is to go with a resist shield and focus purely on ranged defense. That's the way people that avoid melee typically go and it does offer better survival than just defense alone. The pool of choice for pure ranged play is fire because of bonfire with the KB to KD proc.
  20. I hope you took whirlwind on your staff/regen because SPINNING is WINNING Of staff/elec you can probably skip either mercurial blow or precises strike along with taunt. I prefer to keep mercurial for the -Def. Despite the animation Innocuous strikes is not bad and you can regularly hit multiple mobs with it with little positioning. If you skipped two powers from staff and took all but the T9 from /elec you can still fit in most pool powers that contribute to survival plus a few epic pool powers.
  21. Everything is viable and especially anything fire blast. How to make it viable depends on your preferred playstyle. Are you shy about getting into melee to use your melee attacks or do you have balls? If the former most people in that camp build for range defense and stay on the perimeters and blast/hover blast. If the latter then people in that camp will typically build for either melee or positional defense that allows them to survive in the thick of it longer. The better players have also mastered the art of movement and other game mechanics and will weave in and out of combat pending the opportunities that arise to get their melee licks in. I see about maybe less than 5% of the player base that actually do this. Doesn't mean that you can't do it, but most people don't adopt that kind of active playstyle and prefer the "I stand still and whack you while you whack me harder" honor code and consequently the people that do this and eat dirt enough times tend to migrate to the previous playstyle and complain about how squishy blasters are. If you take the time to learn how to play blasters you can be a fearless engine of destruction, if not the pew pew option is always available. Also, what kind of budget are we working with here? All the inf in the world or do you have any limitations? Power pools that you'd prefer to have? Be specific.
  22. AS should use the overhead smash animation with a giant stone mallet, similar to the sped up crushing blow animation in TW. And the victim would then be buried in the ground with it's head sticking out with stars swirling around it. That's how it works in real life, that's how it needs to be.
  23. It's cool that you shared alternate builds for the masses so they have more choices and can make educated decisions on how they want to build their toons. But c'mon, this comment is silly. In fact they are more guaranteed than winter/purple drops and unlike those you don't have to collect a whole set.

Dude I'm not even trying to argue with you, simply pointing out scenarios where knockback may cause additional adds and be a concern for some teams, not sure why are you taking such an aggressive and dismissive tone. And you response is basically telling people to L2P and you know how well people are going to receive that.
  25. The best advice for people playing on a team with electric affinity support. "GET IN THE DAMN SPHERE!" Yes even you the blaster that thinks range = safety. Spoiler alert it's not.
