Travel Powers - what happened?

SWTOR is a bigger culprit to me. I haven't played much of it and still have much, much more to do and explore despite years of sporadically playing it. Recently they enabled the galactic travel menu from anywhere, whereas before you had to use it from your ship

Really?

There was already a TP to ship deal on a long timer.  And a TP to checkpoints deal ..

As I mentioned in the other thread; while the data states 1 Second, it really feels like it's closer to 0.67  . . . maybe that's just a perspective thing, but this sucker really does feel instantaneous.

I think the 1 second is accurate, but it's still really nice. That's going 300 ft in that entire 1 second span. Not bad

Yup. Not convenient enough, apparently.

So now all those features are obsolete too and clutter up the place. That's one thing that CoH has developed well - most older features still matter.

Kinda sucks TBH seeing your ship in the hanger was a cool part of the game.

Don't touch Super Jump, Super Speed, or Combat Jumping. They're perfect. Not only that, Super-Jump is THE best power in the game, and nothing else in-game makes you feel Super than leaping around the landscape, cities, maps.

I think you've mistaken Super Jump with Combat Jumping. CJ is a must have power on every character I make, SJ is nice if I can fit it, but Super Speed will always come first.

Gasp! CJ might be a useful super power, but SJ is a legit SUPER power. Nobody ever exclaimed Superman was "...faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a locomotive, able to resist Immobilization with a small defense  bonus and fine maneuvering adjustment capabilities."

Anything you can have, we have it.  Even got a devil in the attic.

I made my first no travel power toon back on live before ninja-run came out.  It was before the fitness pool was free, too so ultra-builds were very tight.  It was almost a badge of honor in that I had a build that focused so much on squeezing out power that I sacrificed my travel power.  Crossing a zone was challenging, but I also really learned the zones well.  I learned all the shortcuts up walls in steel canyon and how to get to the highways in skyway city.  I learned the quickest way to the terra volta power plant door by foot.  I actually really enjoyed it.  Then they gave us free fitness, and ninja run/beast run and I was almost upset because my sacrifice was no longer needed.  I still generally don't take a travel power because I really like the ninja run and beast run animations.

But having all the easy access powers on top of that, and now on this server the public teleporter - well there's just no point using anything else now, unless you're deliberately restricting yourself for the sake of roleplay.

At least for me, this is one of the great things about the game now in that we have more options.  Those that want to min/max by skipping travel pools can do so while those that want to keep them can.

Well, in theory there's the argument "you can do x if you want to" - but in reality, water seeks its own level.  If the rules allow it, people generally will just drift into doing it.  To a certain extent, developers are in a constant struggle between what they know would make for a good game and what people want that they think would make a good game (where, in reality, if they get what they want, they'll get bored fairly quickly and drift away).

Again, it's a question of balance - on the one hand, there's the extreme of nickel and diming everything, on the other extreme there's God Mode and you might as well just email each other spreadsheets (wasn't there that skit on the web at one time, a game where you just press a button and "level"?)  Somehow there's a sweet spot where the rules the developers set up make for a good combination of immersion (virtual worldeyness) and QOL/convenience.  It's just hard to find that sweet spot (partly because it's a moving target - it's almost like, adjust one thing in the game and everything else has to be adjusted slightly).

In regards to P2W offering free powers such as Ninja/Beast Run, I believe the philosophy of the developers was to make sure players from live who bought these powers with real world dollars could come back to the game and still retain access to those powers. The way to do this was to make it free for everybody.
