Solvernia Posted May 8, 2020 Posted May 8, 2020 The purpose of this build is to provide a character that can perform a vital yet overlooked role in a team: that of tactical enemy repositioning. Everyone likes AoE attacks. They kill lots of things dead really quick. But the issue is that not all AoEs are created equal. Some are big, some are small. Some are wide, some are skinny. It's perfectly okay to have any kind of these AoEs, but in order to level the playing field for our radially-challenged friends, we need to be able to keep our enemies in a position where everyone can use their AoEs to equal effect. As such, I present to you the Pinball Wizard: a FF/Energy defender whose primary focus is doing as much knockback as possible in order to group enemies into corners/walls. Secondary focuses of this build include: crowd control (very effective in this case, as enemies can't do anything while they're flying through the air); team buffing (bubbles are always welcome), and damage (to a lesser degree, since knockback sets don't always provide the best damage buff.) I trust that the community will appreciate the effort I went through to test this build in random LFG teams. If so, how does it play out? I suspect you'll get a lot of push back (no pun intended) from teams that don't understand how Knockback works. 1 What this team needs is more Defenders

After all, the primary focus is doing knockback. The build is incredibly useful to shore up weaknesses in teams similar to how controllers work -- if not better. After all, knockback is just a spammable hold. When enemies are flying around willy nilly, they can't fight back except for popping off maybe one power every few seconds. Since this build has no healing, it takes Vengeance for the inevitable scenarios in which enemies do decide to attack back and someone faceplants, and also for the extra LOTG slotting. The Resuscitator temp power is useful in this situation. I have had the occasional issue with teaming due to people's misconceptions about knockback being some ancient, insufferable evil, but the teams that do let me stick around either find it hilarious, legitimately helpful, or both. Did get reported for griefing and cussed out once, so this build may not be for the faint of heart. Edited May 8, 2020 by Solvernia 4

Not as effective as bunching them up against a wall, but you still get the benefit of enemies ragdolling and unable to attack. 3

Yeah, those Kinetic Crash sets are a Godsend! Much love for you to embrace the KnockBack! People in-game are a lot better about it than people in-forums I've found. I do want to throw out that I love seeing people take Repulsion Bomb. Just an old power (from a Def Primary!) that I see many overlook in favor of less-KB options. Good on you! Flat Line Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 I know this type of build usually gets a lot of ‘pushback’.... But it can be a viable way to control. I mostly play an Energy/Energy Blaster, and I find smart knockback with Energy Torrent, Power Push, and (drawing a blank... tier 1 punch) very effective at damage mitigation and control. I slot the Nova and Energy Blast with KB to KD, they are otherwise a little hard to control. But they still offer a lot with KD. The trick is to be careful. If you don’t control it, you’re just slowing things down. Or trolling the melee ATs. Or worst case, pushing anchors around. Done right it’s fun, and looks awesome! 2
