What's the Best Gravity Dominator Build You Can Put Together?

oedipus_tex

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering what the best Gravity Dominator build you can assemble would look like. I admit I'm partly asking because I don't consider this set very good on Dominators. But if you had to build a Gravity Dom, what sets would you use?

I'm tempted to go with some kind of Gravity/Psi Dominator for Drain Psyche, but when I try to build it I find myself skipping all but 3 powers in the Assault set.

Just curious whether it is possible to make this set work in a way that I haven't thought of.

I too am trying to find something sweet to go with Gravity. So far, I'm considering Gravity/Earth.

Having Singularity throwing in some extra controls would allow me to smash things with extra safety. Plus, like the idea of stacking stuns with power boosted Wormhole + Fissure.

I've also seen quite a few players raving about Gravity/Savage and the fun teleport factor.

Warning: This post may contain an opinion.

I have a young grav/sav and i've played it on test at 50 quite a bit.

Teleporting enemies and teleporting yourself just doesn't get old.

Lifting an enemy and nailing it mid air with feral charge just doesn't get old.

Lift gives /sav another nice ranged attack, so you end up being very good melee and solid from range.

I think the secret to playing grav is getting comfortable with quickly toggling dim shift on and off to absorb the alpha. But it can be problematic in teams at times.

Ultimately dim shift has too long of an activate period though imo. You can't play nifty games jumping in and out of it. I believe it is a 2 sec activate period, but 0.5 would be much better.

Below is the best I've been able to come up with so far. Grav/Psi/Fire, skipping nearly everything in Psi. Basically using it only for Drain Psyche and Psychic Shockwave.

Not sure how I feel about this to be honest. On the one hand, it's very survivable. On the other, I can't help but compare it to a Controller, who would do a bit less raw damage, but actually be able to use its support set. Drain Psyche does make a build very survivable though and debuffs AVs so maybe this works?

One thing that stands out immediately though is that on Dominators, the Impact mechanic pushes you to rely on Gravity Control for damage as opposed to your Assault set. I can make Psi work because Drain Psyche is a good power. Much less sure about other Assault sets.

I love my Gravity/Psi, one of the fastest characters to become my main.  I always have a tool for the job, and I can really feel the impact (heh) of the controls.  I use some binds with Jaunt to dash into a group and get 6+ hits on drain psyche, use shockwave and be back out before they can hit me back.

I have Primal Forces Mastery, but I think at 50 I will respec to Soul Mastery so I can add Soul Drain into my melee rush.  Anyone have experience with that?  It seems the only way to get a sudden damage boost with Gravity/Psi.  It'll either be that or Psychic for Link Minds and get some extra defense.  I'd welcome any advice on that choice.

I have Soul Mastery on my Mind/Psi, and I like it a lot. Everyone loves more damage and accuracy and Dark Consumption means no more End issues.

ok cool!

yeah I was wondering if Dark Consumption was necessary since I have Drain Psyche and Domination, but might be nice to have an instant-refill while Domination is still going!

Well, one generally shouldn't have End issues with a /Psy Dominator. Hitting two targets with Drain Psyche takes care of any issues, and usually even a single target is still enough. I run Fire/Psy, and even with Hot Feet and multiple defense toggles, I can manage the End burn as long as I hit a single mob (I always try to target 2+ just to avoid the chance of missing, but sometimes you can't and have to settle for a single victim).

I'm tempted to say Ice. Basically, your scheme with Gravity is to Wormhole enemies on top of yourself and take them down in a nicely packed fashion while your Singularity does what it can to help. Ice is one of the best at this sort of strategy, since it keeps the Disoriented enemies close and deals quite a bit of PBAoE damage.

I wonder if it would balance Gravity Control on Dominators better if Propel did AoE damage. Dominators have tons of single target but AoE damage is limited. The power already does AoE knockdown.

For sure though, the Impact mechanic should apply to Assault attacks. Or else be changed to make better sense on this archetype.

Leveled a Grav/Savage dom to 50 on red side content, solo without a problem.  Solid from range, great from Melee, decent single and group holds that really come into their own when you have perma dom.  Personally, I didn't like the phase power and abuse the heck out of wormhole.  Wormhole has a great range and recharge.  Don't grab the entire spawn, no big deal, you didn't aggro them.  The spawn wonders, well, why didn't you send them into a corner?  Throw in feral charge, its just fun.  Plus, you get Singularity, one heck of a wonderful pet.

Highly recommend Gravity/Savage.

Hello oedipus,

If it was me?  I'd play to L50.  Take all the powers.  Decide what I like and don't.

So I can build around that.

My L50 Grav/Energy?  You have the new 'Energy' dam bonus mechanic.  Energy is super smooth and fun to play.  And kind of goes with the hard hitting control of Gravity.

Grav and Energy induces that range and close to melee blap style I favour.

I do have a Mind/Psi domi scratching around somewhere...

But I'm Grav' Energy.  For this topic.

A bit end heavy.  But you have the incarnates and build to tackle that.  (*I have the Special Uniques to help with my stamina...)

I find it very fun.  I took everything and am loathe to exclude anything from my build.   So I may have to build around that.  Not sure if I took hasten.

My computer is currently 'off line' so I can't check.

But I'll create a build for this one day.

The Singularity pet is a killer power.  Ofc.  Gravity Wormhole an excellent 'tank pull' to put the mobs in the corner...or fall them onto your Sing' pet. 😄

The Dimension shift power is unusual.  I like that.

And who doesn't like Forking Lift Trucking someone?  Wit' teh' Bonesmasher on follow up...along with...energy transfer....for the cup of grass?

Azrael.

@laudwic, can you post your build? I have been considering playing a Dominator for some time. I like the sound of what you are doing and seeing your build may give me some good insights into how to play a Dominator. Could you give me an idea of your combos? Does it work well on a team?

@laudwic, can you post your build? I have been considering playing a Dominator for some time. I like the sound of what you are doing and seeing your build may give me some good insights into how to play a Dominator. Could you give me an idea of your combos? Does it work well on a team?

I'm at work and I don't have Mids but this will give you an idea:

Gravity:

Crush - skipped - Its an immobilize the best feature was the negative fly

Lift - part of my normal attack chain used third.

Gravity Distortion - This is the power I used first as it will give bonus damage to subsequent uses of lift or propel

Propel - the power I use after Gravity distortion.  While it only damages one foe (plus bonus damage from gravity distortion) it knocks others down.  If they are getting up, they are not attacking.

Crushing Field - Skipped - just AoE Immobilize

Dimension Shift - Skipped, others love this, it can be fun but I never got great at aiming it to split groups.  Just not fun for me.

Gravity Distortion Field - Group hold - I put the dominator set with the energy orb proc.  Group hold and a short term agro soak pet.

Wormhole - Love this power - it does not need much slotting I did a stun duration set - Grabs and teleports spawns.  Solo, grab a few, shove them in a corner, go to town.  Those left behind do not aggro.  If teaming, it groups spawns together.  I find I use it more than Gravity Distortion Field.  Just remember to shove them into a corner as they wander when disoriented.

Singularity - THE BEST PET EVER - get it, six slot it, tell it how much you love it.  This little guy has soloed ambushes for me more times than I want to admit.  I've watched it hold an elite boss and it was winning.

Note: every spot I could put a chance for recharge in a knockback power.

Savage: (sorry, can't find a good list of power on-line and I have to go to a meeting soon)

Call Swarm: two slotted this with a healing proc (its a up to level 30 damage set also gave +10% regen)  Does a little damage, but remember you WANT blood as it gives you a minor recharge bonus and and nice endurance kick) use this to do that little bit of extra damage, I use it all the time because it activates and recharges very quickly and I want to keep blood up.

The only power I skipped was the PbAoE.  I found it too small, it ate all your blood counters for too little return.

Take both normal melee - six slot them

The cone is great to build blood - more useful than you would think at first

Feral Charge is great!  Teleport in to attack.  Just fun.

Get Call Hawk - great ranged damage.  It is fun to watch it take out a minion alone.)

Spot prey is worth having, but not worth extra slots.

Blood Craze is a healing power that is worth having but remember, you want to use it early as most of the healing is overtime.  I didn't slot this more than the initial.

I soloed mine and it did better with much of the harder content than my Sentinel because I would split groups with wormhole.

I got kick/tough/weave (Luck of the Gambler bonus recharge in Weave)

Hasten two slotted - not permanent but close enough

I slotted to get as much recharge as I could to get permadom.

Since this was my red side character, I get the villain tip power which fills your domination bar.

I got Maneuvers and tactics but I got those at the expense of not having a travel power.  Again, a defense power to put in another Luck of the Gambler.  (Day job power in Grandville gives a free jetpack - logging off there gives more time to it or you can by 30 min at 5k at P2W)  If I'm looking for a flight power, I just get it through P2W or day jobs.

I took Mace Mastery as my Epic

Scorpion Shield (Def so another place for a Luck of the Gambler)

Personal Force Field (I was surprised how nice this power is to have.  Basically, it lets me stop taking damage for a minute and figure out how I'm going to handle things or get out of there)

Summon Tarantula (summon on to the Elite boss and let it absorb damage for a while)

Hope it helps!

Hey all,

Last couple weeks I leveled a Grav/Energy to 50 and maxed out the build. My all time fav character has been an Ice/Ice Dom and now I am worried I may have a new favourite.

The reason why I picked Grav was to set mobs up with Wormhole and then activate Soul Drain (Soul Mastery) together. Energy seemed to be a high damage set that would accompany the bonus damage well and I can say that after a Total Focus (Gives bonus damage to the next attack), my boosted Whirling Hands is very satisfying. The fact that wormhole recharges so fast means I have some form of AoE control each new group and am rarely overwhelmed.

I am not sure if my build is final yet, but I have enough recharge going to have Soul Drain recharge in roughly 70s which is 40s downtime. My only regret with Soul Mastery is not having the Defense power, however my SL resist is high. I am using a lot of the Winter IOs take make up other Defenses.

One of the major benefits I find with /Energy, and I believe it was mentioned already, is that you have both good Melee and Ranged attacks. I prefer to play melee however Power Burst and Snipe being part of your attack chain makes you feel like a ranged melee character.. heh.

My build is very top heavy in the sense that most of my early powers are just LotG mules. I have a separate build in the works for being exemplared down and won't focus so much on melee.

The biggest downside for this build is the activation times. Wormhole > Soul Drain > Total Focus > Whirling Hands is a monster wombo-combo but it does take time to pull off. Add in Dark Obliteration/Consumption for extra AoE.

Soul Mastery is pretty much my favorite epic for Doms. I know most people prefer Ice, but Soul offers End management, good armor, bonus Acc + Damage, and a decent pet. Plus, a nice AOE, if you need one.

A little late to this thread but here is mine.

Love seeing Unrelenting & Unleash Potential used together with Link Minds and the focus on boosting holds & stuns (very under appreciated). Well Done!

@oedipus_tex

Gravity Control / Psionic Assault has always had a pull on me. Lift, Propel and Worm Hole are some of the most fun powers in the game. Add Drain Psyche and Psychic Shockwave and I'M IN.

Skipping many of the powers works, they just aren't needed on higher end builds. Note: It does become very average if you play down to lower level content.

whoa uhh can you elaborate on this?

If you do enough tip missions choosing the Villain result, then you can do a villain alignment mission.  Succeed in that mission, wait a few days and you will be given the Villain alignment power of Frenzy.   Clicking on this power will send your domination bar to 100%.  It DOES NOT recharge your domination power, but it fills your domination bar so you can click on your domination power if it has recharged.  (Filling the domination bar and recharging the domination power are two different things.  Permadom is possible by recharging the domination power before it would normally expire which drops the bar.  If the domination bar is full and the domination power is recharged, you can hit it again.)

This power has a 6 minute recharge time that cannot be changed.

I use it to start domination before I start fighting or if I got distracted and let permadom slip.
