Willpower?

Hi,

 

I'm trying to understand the main drawbacks of using a willpower tank.

I was told that the aggro management wasn't as good as some other sets but is it really that noticeable?

I have a theoretical build that would be softcapped to all typed and 88% res to s/l with 78hp per second regen (1 enemy) but I would like to know what to watch out for.

The weak aggro aura has been fixed on Tankers and Brutes, so you won't have that problem to worry about.

 

The biggest problem that I've had with my Will/SS Tank has been, believe it or not, a lack of endurance drain resistance. If you're near the softcap on most things then that probably won't be an issue for you.

     And heavy defense debuffers.  Without DDR (Defense Debuff Resistance) any defense debuffs can get problematic once that first one gets in past your capped defense.  Cimerorans, for example, with all those sword attacks can trigger cascade defense failure fairly easily if they (when) they land the first attack.

No self heal is the biggest drawback, that I have found, but easily mitigated with the massive amount of regen possible or via incarnate (Rebirth Destiny).  Also, defense debuff resistance (DDR) is very low (comparatively, considering other tanking primaries), so without Barrier or the Ageless version that has temp DDR, you can get squishy in things like the ITF.  I remade my WP/Fiery Melee 50 from live and he's a whole lotta fun (many on this forum have seen him in action on Torchbearer for Tanker Tuesdays), he's my best farming tank and powers, nearly effortlessly, through 98% of PVE content.  WP is a very fun set, not as "set it and forget it", like Invulnerability, but very durable.  Also one of the primaries that I use the T9 (well, his name is "Will", so you gotta take "Strength of Will", right?), routinely...or at least when I've got even a single blue skittle in inventory 😆

The main problem is that the set is so "Set and forget", that when you DO run into problems (for which you DO have mitigation tools), you forget all about them.

It's not THE toughest set for Tankers.  But it's mix of Resist, Regen and Defense, as well as Enhancement options makes it tough enough for most things.

Energy and otherwise, WP covers defense and resist "holes" with absorb and regen...quite efficiently.  The build I just posted can (and has) taken everything but solo ITF, I've thrown at him.

The bottom line...

 

WP is a great set for those that enjoy a streamlined set that requires no maintenance. It has layered mitigation that performs respectably and predictably. It leans heavily into regeneration to achieve a scalable dependent mitigation curve, which is a strength at low diff and a handicap at high diff. It works well out of the box, but begins to fall off when the diff is cranked up.

 

I've pushed WP to absolute min)max extremes on all ATs and the set is fun but will not be able to keep pace with invuln, stone or even rad.

 

If you don't care about meta, maxing or extremes, WP is great. Avoid foes that debuff Regen, this will dirt nap you. Be careful of cascade failure.

 

In the end, WP is great fun and I love it, but when it's time to ProperTank, WP won't cut the mustard.

My Willpower / Super Strength tanker is one of my favorite toons. The build I'm using handles 98% of content easily and does respectable damage. When it fails, though, it fails quickly. I think the combination of low defense debuff resistance, Rage crash, and my own lack of skill are the culprits.

 

In my experience, Invulnerability, Shield, and Super Reflexes are all more durable. I haven't played the resist-based sets enough to have an informed opinion.

I played an inv/ss on live but wanted to try something different.

My build for anyone that was interested without incarnates selected as I like to try and see what stats I can get prior to them.

I also forgot about the tanker sets until after I finished it and I'm not sure how to fit them in without sacrificing.

I actually had an idea for a WP/Ice Tanker, which I've found to be fun and pretty survivable. Tested it on Brainstorm against +4/x8 radios in PI, and it seemed really good against Arachnos, Carnies, and Tsoo. The only times I had an issue was when the debuffs started to roll in, but that's what I have Ageless for to counter. Frozen aura works like footstomp, Frost is great for extra AoE, and I basically used the four attacks from Ice as both single and multi-target chains, which flowed smoothly without gaps. I'm in the process of leveling a WP/EM Tanker, and am currently at lvl 26. Aggro management has not been an issue at all in team play. What I have noticed in solo play, and what others have already mentioned, is the lack of DDR. Fighting groups of Warriors in Talos radio missions can be dicey once one of their -def attacks lands. I definitely have to keep some purples on me to counteract the cascading defense failure. Another noticeable hole in WP I've noticed is the lack of any native slow resistance. In Councl radio missions, I sometimes get shot multiple times resulting in -recharge debuffs getting stacked on me. I find it very annoying, but then again I've been spoiled by Ice Armor.

The biggest problem that I've had with my Will/SS Tank has been, believe it or not, a lack of endurance drain resistance. If you're near the softcap on most things then that probably won't be an issue for you.

 This is exactly correct, IMO.  Willpower tanks have basically Zero endurance issues, once you level past a certain point.  

 

HOWEVER, you also have zero endurance protection.  In practice, what this means is that sappers, Mu mystics, Shockers and like will drain your endurance down to zilch and you will swiftly experience toggle cascade failure and face-planting.

 

I find this to be an issue primarily when playing solo.  If you regularly team with groups that have solid support (kinetic or what have you), it's really not an issue.  When it does happen, I have resurgence on a 2 minute 15 second toggle, so I can just get right back up again.

 

Apart from that, I love Willpower.  Absolutely one of my favorite armor sets!   👍

Does anything offer end-drain resistance? We can at least get some DDR from Ageless Radial, and you can go Ageless Core for more recovery, but I can't think of anything at the moment that grants drain resist.
