I also have noted that on the "official" CoH reddit, you can't actually post links to anything related to Homecoming. You cannot link other reddits, discords, or even forums. I've also personally had posts advertising in-game events taking place on Everlasting, like the Christmas Bash I threw that were instantly removed by admins for containing "bad words", as well as guild adverts for the same reason.

None of the afformentioned stuff had so much as a close-to-curse in the message, and I've seen other posts for similiar for other servers, yet was told directly by staff that it breaks Rediquette to basically even link to or try to get people to engage with Homecoming, as the admin team sees it as "poaching members", which tbh is entirely ridiculous if the people the posts are marketed towards are already in homecoming.

You can.  I have linked directly to the Homecoming Discord server, as late as last week. I have seen your posts that have been deleted… they contained several links, and honestly I could see how it could trigger the AutoMod’s anti-spam mechanism.  That being said, it is a little overzealous at times.

"Poaching members" that is fresh coming from the people that when a newcomer ask about servers goes on and on about why HC is the worst choice and they should join x one instead, you would think by now they got over being banned (with reason) from the original private one.

That is bad, but it also goes both ways.  There's been many posts and comments over the years promoting Homecoming (especially Excelsior and Everlasting), and denigrating other servers (even other Homecoming servers).  "Homecoming should merge Indomitable, Torchbearer, and Reunion with Excelsior.  Heck, they should merge Everlasting with Excelsior as well.  (Yes, I've seen this.)  There should be no other server than Excelsior.  Rebirth, Thunderspy, New Dawn, Asmodei, and other servers should all shut down and their developers should migrate their players to Excelsior and join the Homecoming team." (Yes, I've seen that as well.)

 

Then I've seen quite a few comments on Rebirth, Thunderspy, etc. posts, "Eh, no one plays here.  You should play on Homecoming where the other people are."

 

Again, I'm not excusing the anti-Homecoming bias on the sub-Reddit.  It's there although it's been getting better.  But it goes the other way as well.

Different opinions and viewpoints aren't exactly welcomed with open arms here and the mods here absolutely hide stuff all the time.  They have since the beginning.  Not saying they shouldn't do it, it's their server so they can do whatever they want.  Just pointing out that this kind of behavior isn't unique to reddit.

Yes, at the start. But it takes a lot to build the habit to return. People go to other platforms more regularly for other things in their life and therefore could indirectly pick up the info about the game. I completely think it is worth spreading the news elsewhere if we would like new or returning players.

"The Reddit scene", sure, but the CoH reddit scene?  If you know what CoH is, then you probably found HC already, without the need for Reddit, and if you aren't familiar with CoH, it's pretty unlikely that you'll gain interest from its reddit page vs what a Google search would yield.  Do what you like, but the cynic in me sees something like this and screams "someone just wants a place where *they* get to moderate their way and/or conduct things in a manner that they wouldn't be able to get away with on the official forums".

So someone makes a spot to talk about city of heroes homecoming stuff and because its not a discord a bunch of people are dogging on it?  Seems a lot like what people claim happens on reddit......

Eh, probably from past experiences from mentioning Homecoming on Reddit.

 

Honestly, other subforums there are - well, hit and miss, but from my experiences on anything dealing with COH on Reddit, I can see why people would be - hmm. Hesitant? Gunshy? Not really gushing? regardless of what the person who created it / mods it intends.

Not surprised that a subreddit would be dogged on by people here even though it will bring more traffic to the servers.

 

Just look at the Homecoming and Mids compatibility thread. Apparently, external collaboration is frowned upon. Anything that is not Homecoming™ Dev sanctioned or a platform (Discord) that fully censors negative feedback will be condemned here.

I hate reddit, I truly do.

 

I only use it for D4 news(don't even care about the CoH reddit). But this right here is pure gold. The discord is just reddit with more outdated memes or sometimes useful advice. Oh, and maybe the folks on the discord don't resort to racial slurs or whatnot as often

it isn’t about “can’t find or be bothered” it’s about finding people where they normally are and converting them into regular users. It’s using social to do advertising or drive users to your platform and not the third party one, which used to be part of my IRL job. People aren’t on your website, go to where they are, lure them to you = profit. I didn’t find out about HC from the forums, I found out about it from Reddit. Now I am both an active player and, more recently, an active forum user.
 

I wonder if there’s also something about perceived approachability on here. Could some of us look at how we interact and wonder “is my attitude helping to foster conversation and a welcoming environment”. I saw someone on the CoH FB saying “why can’t I post pictures on the HC forum? Everyone else seems to.” I probably won’t ever know why they didn’t post that question on these forums, I hope it wasn’t because they didn’t feel comfortable.

Yeah I get this. Sometimes I talk about CoH in coffee shops, sometimes I talk about it with friends during a run. It would be foolish to dictate where the appropriate 'forum' (see what I did there 😉) was for folks to talk about the game.

 

Only thing I wanted to point out was that the official means for the Homecoming team to put out information is the Homecoming forums and their Discord. And while they can lead folks to the site by requiring them to sign up to play their take on the game, it's up to the individual if they want to stick around and use their forums to talk about it. Maybe there is a better platform for advertising to new players, I'm not in that business to say what works best or even if that's the path Homecoming should take. I'm just here because they keep the lights on each month.

The thing is: I agree that the official way HC communicate should be through the platforms and avenues they've set up. It is a much better place to put it all. I guess I just don't think we should poopoo those other avenues or the people using them. I don't want the team to spend what time they have thinking about how they formulate their reddit release notes, but can't see any issues with anyone putting the link in a place that has higher traffic (this is, of course, depending on if that place allows that link there).
