PLEASE ALLOW US TO MINIMIZE THE "RUNE OF PROTECTION ANIMATION"

I love the sorcery pool power set. I HATE! HATE! HATE! the stupid looking runic HULA HOOP it puts around my toons waist when activated. I have tried to see if it can be done in the customizer but I cannot find a way. I know that there must be other heroes out there who are tired of villains dying of laughter when the see you with a giant spinning , ugly HULA HULA HOOP spinning about your midsection. lol...cheers!

To be fair, it doesn't look like anyone is disagreeing with you to me. So there is that at least. Everyone seems fine with the option being added.

Yep, we have to have a non-FX version of all of those sets because powersets aren't allowed to have a theme. People want to min-max to the sky without any downsides whatsoever.

 

So when will I be allowed to use Aid Other without that silly tricorder? That should be first on the list before making the SORCERY POOL look like something that doesn't have to do with sorcery.

They should get rid of the stupid tricorder. I mean at least give you the option. The ability to minimize effects enhance the players ability to create a theme. Like for example  I would like it if you had the option to make it look like your not casting a spell but rather channeling an invisible power. Not all magics have a flashy effect( lots of movies support this Merlin from Excalibur 1981 for example, and plenty of books from Lovecraft use vast amounts of magic but almost all of it plays invisible to the observance of man.

Min-Max'ing and downsides seems like an odd argument to bring into this.

 

Some folks, like myself, spend a good deal of time on creating the looks of our characters and can't stand looking like a walking ice-cube. Other, like myself, get headaches from some of the FX chosen by others or that there is no minimal FX option.

 

My most obnoxious character, a Bubbler named Rainbow Sherbet puts out giant, obnoxiously fluorescent, pink/green/orange soap bubbles and I can only tolerate to play her for an hour at most. For everything else I create where effects are applied to others (as well as my own character), I tend to be a minimalist.

 

Back during Legacy, before they gave us water-based powers, I used fire for my water/time themed character. Coloured properly fire actually made a pretty good substitute. So powerset themes be damned, because any of us may have our own take on it.

Recoloring a powerset to use it for something else creative and great! I just have an issue with allowing people to completely remove the theme from a powerset. If you use the Stone powerset you should expect to see some Stone. If you use an Ice powerset expect to see some Ice. If you don't like either of those then recolor them or play Willpower or Invuln.

 

I especially take issue with people wanting to remove the FX from the Sorcery Origin Pool. The entire point behind the Origin Pools is to have powers with FX representative of that particular origin. And I think that most of the people who want to have a no-FX version of Sorcery really just want to have a no-FX version of Rune of Protection.

I think there should be a reasonable minimum of FX. The OP's request isn't awful, but we're getting closer to what I'd call the bare minimum of FX.

I don’t have a problem with minimizing the effect of the RoP. If you can’t thereafter tell when your mez resistance drops, that’s on you. Generally, powers have visible effects because that is feedback to the user. If you want to forego the feedback, I don’t want to see threads like “I can’t tell when RoP runs out, can I make it have XYZ effect?” You asked for minimal FX, so live with it.

 

As for alternate animations, in an ideal world, you’d be able to select from 5 different animations based on origin. Magic = casting, Tech = device, Natural = fist blasting, etc. But that’s a lot of customization and not enough animations to go around — not to mention the nightmare of balancing the activation times of multiple animations of different lengths for every power. And all your “magic” powers would look similar and stale.

 

In the land of the Big Rock Candy Mountain, the real pie-in-the-sky dream game, you’d get to customize the animation effect also. Fire would always do DOT, but you could make it look like ice, radiation, psionics, or whatever. Again — huge investment of time and resources for a purely cosmetic thing.

I am in favor of alternate animations. Specific to Sorcery... I do agree that Rune of Protection is a peculiar standout, considering how the other powers in the set can be minimized (to different degrees).

 

I get the original idea behind the "Origin" pools... but from my PoV those pools offer enough variety between each other that sometimes it just makes sens (to me, anyway) to take powers from an Origin pool even if the pool makes no thematic sense for my character. Some of this is indistinguishable from "min-max" thinking, but sometimes there is a specific non-travel power I want for concept so... Bob's your uncle, that pool gets picked.
