- Don't be in a rush. The game doesn't "start at 50." Especially with early characters, just spend time getting to know how things work.  There's plenty of content on the way up

- Don't assume because you don't like how one powerset works in an archetype, you won't like the archetype. Two different powersets can have wildly different feels.

- Don't worry about some superbuild or IOs right away. There are useful tools, like Mids, to help with "builds," but you don't need to have something ridiculous to finish content, nor do you have to run it at settings you're not comfortable with. It's a game. Play however is fun to you.

- You have 1000 slots per server. Use them. Experiment. Do "Sounds stupid but looks fun" stuff.

- ... don't make your first character an "Epic AT" (Peacebringer, Warshade, Soldier of Arachnos or Widow.) They were initially meant to be unlocked at 50, and have some quirks and complexities to them.

- If you're not sure what someone's advertising for in the LFG (Looking for Group) channel, ask. Team requests can often just look like a string of random acronyms.

- I *personally* wouldn't start "goldside" (Praetoria - the Going Rogue option.) It can be fun, but also has quirks to it.

- Have fun. There are plenty of different ways to do so.

Hi, Boosie, and Welcome Home!

It's always a delight to hear from a new player, and we've had many over 2024.  Allow me to reference a thread and a posting where good starter info can be found.

Posting on chat terms (we use a lot of them in our chats and teammate selections and this should clarify):

A good thread full of information for new players:

I would take an additional moment to caution you in regards to creating characters that look or seem like licensed characters elsewhere:  DON'T.  Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it is a common mistake with new players, even with some old players, and it's always a sore spot with them when the dev team has to "generic" the character.  There's a clear rule not to build a licensed character and it's needed to prevent lawsuits from those who hold the license.  You can, however, create homage character which hold some familiarity to the licensed character, but there's enough change in look, name, and powers that it is clearly separate.

Please do ask for help and information at any time, both in the games (there's a Help Channel in chat) and here on the forums.  We have a wonderful community ready to welcome and assist.

All of above, yes. There's lots of folks on the server willing to lend a hand if you get lost, or debating AT's or power selection, some are a lot more informed than I am. (I tend to stick to just playing whatever flavor of mind bangery I have going on for fun.)

Welcome.

Play through your regular contacts, there's some great missions there and you'll get rewarded reward merits for completing storyarcs. Look up @Gulbasaur's good mission guide. Lookup @AboveTheChemist's post for badge pop menus (it really helps you find badges and explore the zones easier, and the post walks you through step by step how to do it). If you want to play a MM and have a full keyboard look up @Sandolphan's keybinds system as it greatly improves my pet control. If you wanna play a PB or a WS ( I recommend typically waiting on them til you have a better feel of the game), @Laucianna has a great guide for Kheldians that can help you maximize their output.

Radios/newspapers are infinitely generated missions but they have no real depth to them.

Download the CoH modder tool to install vidiot maps. Download mids reborn, but don't build super expensive builds on the production servers until you've tested it out (there's a test server where enhancements including IOs are free and you can experiment with builds to get a feel for a toon before you commit to it). Also when you see people's builds on the forums, don't just blindly slot our someone else

Don't farm up your first few characters. The biggest thing about CoH has always been using creativity to make new characters. That said once you have max level character, playing it can help you find your other characters.

Content quality - gold > red > blue

Content quantity - blue > red > gold

Use the help channel in-game, there's a Homecoming Discord to use for the community of you want.

Otherwise the GM staff is pretty responsive to issues you encounter, especially @GM Impervium.

Don't be afraid to play whatever character concepts you want, it's your time and fun. You don't have to play a flavor of the month.

Also if you want to learn how to never be poor in-game, check the marketing section of the forums and read the guides there.

Lastly have fun, and don't be afraid to fail.

Have fun!

Kill Skulz!

Make Alts!

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

Welcome

I'd strongly advise that you play and enjoy the content, especially at first. Probably most easily done as a hero in Paragon (rather than a villain, or Praetorian.) Blue, red, then gold, to put it in colloquial terms.

You can power level but you will lose out on a lot of player experience and feel for the game and some of the best content is along the journey. (It's not bad to PL per se but I firmly believe you'll have a much more rewarding experience doing it old school)

Make lots of alts and experiment with different ATs (Archetypes) to discover which you like best. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of powerset combinations so have fun discovering those too.

Don't be afraid to ask for help in the Help chat channel. People are pretty friendly and will give good advice.

Have many funs.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

I would at least look into IOs. I would as a rule slot level 25 Common IOs into your first/initial build(s), and get one of them to 50. You could even switch over to level 35 common IOs. Outside of crafting them, they sell for cheap on the auction house, command /ah. Use that/those 50(s) to start to horde more currency to eventually switch over to more expensive builds. I think I priced a build with level 25 common IOs at around maybe 4 mill if you buy it all from the auction house, and that's super easy enough to earn simply selling rare salvage on the auction house. If you add in the ATOs and some 1-slot wonders, you will be far better off than those characters who started out without having access to IOs at all. I never really touched the IO sets on Live, so just know you don't have to go all in on pimping out a build. I've earned billions in game and still have numerous level 50s with nothing but common IOs.

Join the discord ASAP.

it has all the modern tips on builds, content, generally useful info. Treat the forums like a small run down town; stick to the only need-to-know’s(modern guides on making $ or some such thats generally pretty solid for today’s CoH.) and pass through as quickly as possible(try and focus your efforts on the discord over getting involved with the forums crowd. Not saying all are bad or even most are, just see my earlier comment about modern info surrounding the game.)

I would recommend a playthrough of the content for your first 50, instead of PLing, but its definitely your choice.

And always fact check any advice you get on Help channel in game with the discord community.

play the character you like.  no matter what anyone says is "best" or "better"  play the "whatever" you came here to play.

play the content you like.  whether that means solo, or pugs, or a weekly social group on discord, or farming, whatever gives you the feel goods

have fun.

- there is an ICON shop in atlas park, north of the central square. you can customize your costume slots there. if you do it before you are level 10, it costs 0 influence

  - you can also design your costume at miss liberty, the trainer right by where you begin

- hollows is a really cool zone, with a bad boss 'frost fire' there. if you do the quests in the hollows (you can go about level 7, to the right of atlas park) and unlock 'defeat frostfire', everyone will join your group and think you are wonderous, because its fun and gives a LOT of xp

- you can click the chat window, at its bottom right, to see a menu.  that menu lets you adjust things like difficulty of enemies, and the number of enemies you'll face regardless of groups size.  running +1 or +2 can result in very good xp if your strong, and higher all the more.

- there is a truck in atlas park square, it shows on your map, and it goes to 'pocket D'.  its sort of a meeting place, be sure to ask for 'Figs' for free drinks at the ski chalet.

  - logging off there, you'll accrue time on your day job, and eventually unlock it as a teleport location. its handy to have later on.

- also in pocket D is 'null the gull' - a seagull who is on top of a truck on the red side of the dance club area.

  - this seagull can change you back and forth to villian, hero, or the mixed alignment classes.  this will let you access different maps.

  - even if you want to stay hero, switch to villian, then talk to him again and switch back.  you'll unlock a special power in 1 week of real time.  in the hero case its a buff to your power that lasts a little while.  very useful at low levels, and it lasts forever / has unlimited uses.
