I gotta admit I wasn't expecting the name release to do much, but I am pleasantly surprised just how many names I was able to snatch up.

So, I checked the name availability in the character creator.....name is available. I don't want to start a new toon, I just want to rename an existing one so I back out and attempt to rename. Doing so, it tells me the name is not available. I think maybe it's because I reserved it by checking the name, so I plug a few others in to clear the way then go back to rename my toon. Still being used by another character. I wondered if maybe someone beat me to the punch, so I head back into the character creator and try the name again.  Available.

 

So apparently the name release thing only works for starting a new toon under the name you are creating. Kind of disappointing.

If you love a name, set it free.. at least the ones you're not really gonna use. Gift them to some friends you'll feel good every time you see them. This is troo.

 

I saw someone trying to sell names on one of the servers.

That person deserves a little timeout, followed by an account reset for the day, and maybe the loss of a finger (just to the first knuckle, nothing too terrible but a taste of old testament).

It's up there with price gouging for water.

Correct.

Create the new character, then delete that character, and the name will be available for rename.

Caution, be quick. Name Stealers are everywhere and their hunger is strong today.

Yeah, you have to make a new character and can then rename an existing one. I'm not sure why they did it this way. I just plow thru the character creator as quickly as possible. It's not a huge hassle.

The way I used is:

Create new character and log back to character select

Have new char on same screen as char you want the name on.

Change new char's name slightly

Immediately change old name to the wanted name.

Then you can delete the temp char.

I tried that also. Deleted character, then tried to rename character. No joy.

However in the time since I originally posted that, now I was able to rename successfully. Maybe there was a delay happening.

I'm now a terrible, awful name-thief. I was, after about five years, able to get my Haroeris' name (properly) on Ex. When I first moved him over from Ev back in the day, it had been taken and that "other" Harry's owner never replied to PMs. So I did the all-caps/0 for an O trick. And have hated that cheat ever since.

 

But now? Now he's fixed. And I have no guilt about snatching someone's precious name at all. I mean, really. Original name owner had years to get their guy to 50 and never did. They didn't even log the character to bump him. So... mine now. 

 

That name was honestly the only one I was interested in trying for.

I did the same thing, except I waited until i was sober.  Last night I was totally afraid I would botch it

I am not greedy nor grabbing names to reserve.

 

I renamed a character to the name he had on his original server when I moved him and it was being held by someone apparently not playing. Renamed a character to a name which a certain Marvel character shares whose theme is utterly different but completely fitting of the character I am playing.

 

I checked and have not lost any of the plentiful names I have on characters which are now freed up. I am not going to take steps to hold those names. If someone wants them, they are out there to take.

I recall people bragging about how many names they had gotten and were sitting on "for later" in the early days of the server. Tons of people knew how the naming system works in this game and wanted to get everything they could before they got taken for use later. I'm guessing for these people later never came, and they just made everything more annoying. Even beyond that, I think people underestimate how many people, picked up the game, made a ton of characters in the creator and just... left never to return, especially in the early days and after we went official. Alot of folks got caught up in the "CoH is back" hype, made a few toons, barely got past the character creator and immediately moved on to something else. Either way I feel like this system should have been put in place ages ago, but I can understand the hesitance. I'm just happy I got my old blaster's name back.

well, of the 925+ alts that i currently have, i can say that none have been reclaimed so far. i am a serial, chronic alt maker that apparently has no self control, but not a bad name camper. 😄

i did grab some good names in this, but, i am not going to name camp those either. i do not farm an alt up to 50, just so i can keep it forever. i figure that there will be some secondary and tertiary waves of name reclaiming, in 1 month and 1 year from now. checking back later would be a good idea.

yep! i got one of my live names back too, Pam Demonium lives again! i know a lot of people that got a lot of their live/original names back too. so, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED devs! 🙂

Candidly, I never tried to get the name before. Not sure if I stole it from a dormant account or not. (I did mention this elsewhere, so it's kind of a double post, sorry)

I’m bummed that I’ve already lost a bunch of names. The arthritis meds I was prescribed caused blood clots and pulmonary embolisms, so I haven’t been able to sit for any extended period which has drastically reduced gaming time. There are plenty of names I don’t care about so I’ve been prioritizing the ones that are on my specialty hardcore and once-a-year holiday characters, but I haven’t been able to get to all of them. As soon as the names were available someone snagged them.

 

The two that hurt the most were RipCurl and Lyrica. I only played Lyrica with a music-themed SG that’s been quiet the last year so she was only level 16 and I guess over the 365-day threshold.

 

I mean, I get the reasoning behind it, but it’s still a drag.

 

I do wish it looked at Combat Level because I have a couple hardcore characters that are permanently level 2. I know that one is Combat Level 39, but now I’ll have to log it in every month rather than playing it when I feel like it. For the others I guess I’ll get the 2xp boost and level them up quick so I can keep the names without worrying about losing them.

 

Actually, I wish it looked at accounts, so if I logged in at all then my names would be safe.
