Years later I'm still prickly about someone on these boards calling me a cheater, I retort calling him an idiot. My post is scrubbed, I get a warning. Their post is still there to this day. Prickly, I say. Turn the other cheek, bend over, and allow yourself to be reamed in dry.

Copied from the 'knockbad, amiright?" thread, in response to a 'maybe a post was reported':

-----

I don't know that someone-else-reporting-a-post is always the reason for a 'warning'; I have it on good authority that occasionally warnings are given to 'both sides' of certain arguments almost entirely because of a sense of 'fairness'. FWIW I don't think I've every 'reported' a post. I have had an entire thread(*1) deleted/hidden, presumably because it made certain people uncomfortable, and based on the user who posted in that thread (rather than contacting me directly) I can guess that the user reached out to a moderator because passive-aggressive open requests to lock threads seems to be their MO.

In (the 'knockbad') thread? I do think that a couple of the posts went past the point of 'snark', into rather direct insults of a specific individual... and (again IMO) it was multiple times. Based on what *I've* gotten warnings for? I am not at all surprised.

-----

(*1) Frankly, IMO that thread should have just been locked if discussion was past the point of utility... because my request/suggestion was one that could come up again in a slightly different context... and the specific context for why I brought that up in the first place has only gotten more sour with age, so it isn't as if it wouldn't be on nobody's mind.

Healthy social interaction is NOT drawing invisible lines around ourselves and exerting Herculean effort to stay inside those lines.

I have much sympathy with @Luminara's position.  I prefer one where I'm much less of a arsehole, because I try to interact as I would in person.

@Snarky, I'm truly sad to see you go.  You've livened up things a lot.  And also brought up many a good point.  The forums will be lesser without you.

I'm just gonna say that one of the reasons I bailed on that thread was that I was getting riled up to the point that I was having to bite my tongue on a lot of things I was tempted to say, some of which probably would have gotten me in trouble, and if I'd kept going I was going to say something I'd regret.  That's part of what I meant when I said it was causing me stress.

Highly contentious topics like that one tend to do that.

A warning is just a warning.  For what it's worth, if I'm guessing correctly (very big if there) which comment it was that was found to be insulting by the devs... well, honestly, it was insulting.  Not so much because of what you said, though, more because of how you said it.  Which... well, is going to happen sometimes.

Leaving the forums isn't the answer.  I may disagree with you on the subject of that particular thread, but the forums are here for us to express ourselves.  Disagreement is going to happen.

I was warned today that the Devs considered my posts in the Suggestions Knockback thread insulting.  And that further infractions will lead to consequences.

Honestly, that thread should have been locked a couple of days ago.  It had long since degenerated into the same people sniping at each other and repeating the same arguments ad infinitum.

That being said, having been a moderator on what seems like practically every form of communicating via the 'net...  I do not envy the mods.  They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.  And something about this game, this community, seems to invite a lot of misdirected passion and over reaction.  (Which I have been guilty of myself on far too many occasions.)

On the first point, I agree.  That's another reason I backed out.  I realized I'd already said everything I was going to say and was just rehashing the same arguments.  At that point, it's time to stop.

On the second point, it's because this game inspires so much passion in general.  Anytime you have that much passion, it's going to get misdirected sometimes.  As with people in general, this community has the weakness (misdirected passion) of its strength (passion for the game in general).

Or, to put it other terms, we get angry because we care.  We care because we're emotionally invested.  The very reason this game came back from the dead, the very reason we're still here to argue about it, is the reason we argue about it.

(And let's remember - the dev team is emotionally invested, too.  We may not always agree with every decision they make, but they care about this every bit as much as we do, or they wouldn't be doing it.  This also means that they're probably a bit more sensitive to people's reactions than they might otherwise be, as well.  After all, for them this is a labor of love).

Definitely.  I'm not immune to wanting to snipe sometimes, but I'm definitely trying to not get involved in "Well, you meant to say this, so I'm  offended" back and forths.

I plead "guilty" to the charges. I can only offer this as my defense: I think it is mean-spirited, simplistic, and possibly the signs of an evil mutant power(*1) to be able to bluntly proclaim what other people are thinking (and/or that certain categories of people are irredeemable) and then use those proclamations to make all sorts of arguments that (I suppose) seem to be irrefutable (in some minds).

(*1) I use the word "evil" because if this is a mutant power, it only seems to trigger when somebody is doing something that the possessor of the power doesn't like.

@Snarky, please make sure you’re not taking this too far. Don’t let anyone run you out of the forums or a game you love… or anything you enjoy. It seems more like you’re punishing yourself more than anyone else. Of course, we will be punished as well because we won’t have your snarky face around to laugh with. Do you mean to punish us too?

Further, your “consequence” should match the crime. An eye for an eye, not a beheading for an eye.  Really, unless you don’t enjoy the rest of us anymore, it would be a good idea for you to continue doing what you enjoy with the people who are your friends. I understand you’re upset, and don’t dismiss that. Just keep balance in mind my friend.

Even though I've had my douchey moments (including a recent one), I don't think anything discussed on the forums is so all-encompassing that it can adequately (or even marginally) serve as a litmus test for how to be be "true to the self." It's just a f'in video game, after all. Whether we like it or not, the truth is it's not what you say, it's how you say it. I could have the cure for cancer, but if I presented it to the world by being a colossal jerk, no one's gonna give a shit. I don't know what Snarky wrote, but receiving a warning is small taters. Not every discussion is - or should be - about who wins the argument. I mean, geez -- a dustup over KB? There has to be a taller hill to die on.

This is unhelpful.

When a person online goes dark it can mean a multitude of things.

I have experienced situations where somebody I cared greatly about suddenly vanished and it was not until much later I learned that they had died, unexpectedly.

When someone disappears, we can respect their actions but knowing they are safe and have moved on at least gives us a chance to  move on ourselves without worrying about someone we've come to enjoy and respect  having experienced serious trouble.

It's common courtesy on @Snarky's part to let us know and, just maybe he can be persuaded to remain and bite another day.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.
