So this is more of a thought exercise than anything else, but it sounds like a neat idea to try!  My apologies if this has been brought up in the recent past, I couldn't think of how to word searches for the topic.

I was speaking with some mates the other day and in our discussion the concept of the “ideal dungeon team” came up.  This is not a concept related strictly to CoH, but I’ll explain the concept through the lens of CoH.

Most content in the game is designed to accommodate 8 players (there are larger raids, and SBB takes four, but I digress).  This means that if there are 8 like-minded people who would like to clear all content as a group (from DFB to four star hard mode content), it could be done with those same players.  A static number is quite common in MMO design and we all hate it when there is not a consistent number of people allowed in “non-raid” content.  Imagine if each TF had a different max number of players, not great.

With the fact that there are 8 heroes/ villains possible in each of these, we can ask the question that some of you have already seen coming.

If you were building a team of 8 heroes/villains to complete all 8 person content in the game, what would you pick?

I’m not asking for a Razor’s edge min/maxed set of builds by any means, just some ideas as to what you consider a valid group for the assignment.  In a perfect world, I’d like to avoid mirror builds, as that’s a little bland, but I can't see why anything else should be off the table.

NOTE: Yes, I realize that anyone can do any content (or close to any content), but let’s accept the reality that a team of 6 masterminds, a sentinel, and a fire/rad Brute to tank might have some challenges trying to finish later content compared to a well balanced group.

For the sake of argument, let's assume "official" content only.  There is some incredibly interesting and challenging AE content, but I'll leave that alone for now.

Thoughts?

This is the pentultimate minmaxer team comp that is used by all minmaxers usually unless special runs are on the table:

5 corrs

2 blasters

tank type.

3 cold corrs

1 kin 1 nature

1 Ice/Fire 1 Fire/Fire

Bio/Axe tank.

If you want the closest to objective best team comp for content, this is it(I would say this is THE objective best tbh but thats no fun and I wanna see what other comps are like)

If doing combo of heroes and villains...

1x Kheldian PB (doubles as blaster/scrapper/etc)

1x Kheldian WS (doubles as blaster/scrapper/etc.)

1x Arachnos Crab (doubles as scrapper/blaster/mastermind)

1x Arachnos Widow (doubles as stalker)

1x Tanker

1x Scrapper

1x Controller

1x Defender

That is my 8 man team. I think it will go ok, but I'm still new.

I'd do something similar to @Seed22but do it with Defenders.  I like the larger buff/debuff values vs purple patch.  Yes Corruptors get the higher damage cap but if you're looking at resistance debuffs and proc damage they don't care about the cap (so the exact sets used might matter).  Truth is there's hardly any significant difference except maybe clear speeds, maybe.  The issue here is my experience with static Corruptor teams is near zero it's all with PuGs where as I've seen all Defender teams on numerous occasions and clear speed is not a factor mentioned in the OP (though I assume a reasonable clear speed is an unstated goal).

8 Masterminds ... sounds very nasty.  Defenders with 48 pets plus maybe gang war, plus Lores well yes please.  Just hope the server doesn't roll over dead first.

Or my own dream never quite realized on Live of 5 Fire/Sonic, 2 Fire/Colds and 1 Fire/Kin and 24 crazed and buffed Imps (plus Lore and all that).

The (not so funny) joke that began when HC buffed Tanks to the roof (giving them the most melee damage…) is the perfect team is 7 Corr and 1 Tank.

..to be fair, it's been 7 Corr and 1 Tank for a long time.

I prefer form over function. Because I can't think of a static 8 that could complete everything, besides I haven't done everything in the game and have failed at parts.

8 veterans have a better chance of success with a broken team over 8 rookies playing a perfectly balanced team.

Warshade

Dual blade/Dark scrapper

Kin/beam defender

Dual build Bane soldier/Crab soldier

Fire/Fire dominator

Stone/radiation tanker

Demon/Thermal mastermind

Energy/energy blapper

I've been on many different combinations, and the beauty of this game is there is no ideal. I've been the tank on a team of controllers and had nothing to do. By the time I've run in everythings locked down and dead or dying. An all MM or all Kheld team is insane. I've run teams with lots of people joining and leaving, and generally we've tromped over the top of everything. I'm taking pugs rahter than TF's or trials though. But trials are even more OP. As long as there is a balance of different AT's on a team in a trial everyone gets the rewards.

I have done a TON of AE work, both long form and single arc. Just search the AE mish list for my sig @cranebump. For more information on my stories, head to the AE forum sub-heading and look for “Crane’s World.” Support your AE authors! We ARE the new content.
