By that metric, you'd think someone swinging a tree around might do more dps than a battle axe or a pair of wrist mounted blades. (TW is only top tier on pylons, before anyone corrects me.)
Also, it's incorrect. Bows could very well have more punch than crossbows depending on various circumstances and comparisons, like what type of bow, what type of crossbow, and who's firing it. In a setting where even the 'natural' heroes and villains demonstrate above peak human strength, I could very easily see a bow being absolutely devastating.
So tl;dr, it's best to just view the merits of the cosmetic change in and of itself and not getting wrapped in 'realism' unnecessarily.
