KelvinKole
My CoH hours are, oddly, mostly split between Tanks and Stalkers. Two very different AT's. It occurred to me today that I've never tried to build a Stalker that could just take a beating. Most of my builds are designed to hit high levels of resistance, softcap defense, etc., but not really optimized for it; I optimize for DPS. So, I want to try it. What do people think the toughest Stalker would be? What combination of powersets a why?
SwitchFade
Look for the build I explained in a thread in this section for dual blades/energy aura.
Shred Monkey
I've never put these 2 together, but I've played them separately. DM/Bio softcapped to non-positional types would be pretty hard to kill. Self heals on top of defense, resists, absorbs, tohit debuffs... even a sleep aura. AoE damage would be weak... but that's most (not all) stalkers. JStacy337
After leveling one, I'd like to point you towards Kin Melee/Energy Aura. If you can get over the "ZOOM!" attacks, the combo is great for debuffing enemy attack power while keeping very high defenses for yourself, an AOE End drain, and a heal/end reduction clicky. One of the few combos that I took through Praetoria that was able to survive everything Gold-side threw at me Formerly Infinity, Currently Everlasting 50s: Necro/Kin MM, Ill/Storm 'Troller, Kin/EnA Stalker, NRG/EnA Sentinel, Grav/Elec Dom, Invuln/Staff Tanker, Mind/Dark 'Troller, Earth/Nature 'Troller, Merc/FF MM
RobotLove
Try /invuln. Invincibility being turned into a flat %def instead of the scaling buff is pretty absurd. Can hit pretty much all the typed def caps easy. No effort S/L resist cap, and plenty of ways to bring all other resists to respectable levels including Psi. Low endurance footprint on the base toggles, so pool picks are easier to run. Dull Pain ('nuff said). Pair it with something slow. I'm partial to Spines.
Microcosm
Staff/Rad. Staff gives you +defense in a fast recharging AoE attack, +resistance from Sky Splitter at combo level 3, and the opportunity for a bunch of knockdown (drop a knockdown proc in Guarded Spin to complete the goodness). Rad gives you heals, absorb, high/even resists with the ability to cap for windows of time using one of the best two t9s available. Sprinkle in enough defense bonuses to get to s/l or melee softcap and you'll have a very sturdy character. Other contender would be Ice/any, because of Ice patch. It pairs especially well with Bio because the AoE sleep in Ice's t9 will stack with Genetic Corruption. Inspiration maker's guide
Troo
There are a lot of stalker sets that can be "tough as nails". Some lean toward autopilot others are more active. If you don't mind being active, it's Regen. Just my opinion, but, it's always going to be Regen. (pair it with whatever, nerfs be damned) A high recharge Regen is the definition of taking hits and shrugging them off. 1600% regeneration on 160% max HP 1/2 time Shadow Meld Placate, optional MoG, or Phaseshift (really it is user error getting spiked on a Regen) Just find some defense and oh my my.. (see hint in spoiler). If you want more autopilot I agree Invulnerability is pretty solid as is Shield A surprise mention may be Ice Armor. (has the debuff resistance many are missing {a late game consideration}). Hjarki
I don't think the primary actually matters much. -hit debuffs are an unreliable form of defense - especially for melee. The various +def attacks might seem good on paper, but they're rarely of much use. They tend to give bonuses like Lethal/Melee. However, every other form of Lethal Defense also has Smashing Defense, so you either up with a 'Smashing Hole' or you completely overkill Lethal Defense. On the Melee Defense end, it's possible to build for positionals - except that virtually every Stalker build that goes for positionals is doing so via a positional defense set. Which means that your +Melee Def set is probably just going to give you way more defense than you need. The control options for Stalkers are likewise not all that great. Most of them either have low Mag, have unreliable conditions attached them or pose slotting problems. For the secondary, I think it's hard to beat Ice Armor. Ice Armor's Defense "hole" is Fire/Cold - which is easily patched with Winter sets and Aegis. Couple this with a crash-less tier 9 power that can hard-cap most resists about 50% of the time, and you can build a nearly indestructible Stalker pretty easily. While Ice Armor has no psi defense, this is an almost universal problem for Stalkers. Even sets with Psi defense tend to have so little of it that it's nearly impossible to reach soft-cap. This echos a lot of my thinking before posting. The best primaries for this are probably Ice, Spines, Staff, and Dark. I agree regarding things like Parry. Ice has a good single target hold and ice patch. All of the attacks slow recharge. Decent Aoe to kill off adds. Spines also slows recharge, while having some knockdown from Ripper and decent Aoe. Staff atleast has a useful version of Parry, some knockdown potential, decent Aoe, and the +resistance buff. Dark has no Aoe, but has some minor - tohit and siphon life. I think performance wise, all of these will probably net similar results. For secondaries, invuln and ice seem to most robust. Invuln remains the king of layering defenses. Ice can sort of mimic that with the tier 9. Both get +hp. Neither is too reliant on recharge speed, not that ice has to worry about debuffs. So decision time: ice/invulv, staff/ice, staff/invuln, ice/ice, spines/ice, or spines/invuln Hmmmmmm Edited May 1, 2020 by KelvinKole
Sgt. Terminus
I would go ice/bio: All the glorious st and aoe damage of ice and one of the most diverse survival tool kits there is (assuming you take all the Bio powers): -S/L Resists -Energy Def -Great Regen -Great recovery (can cap it with PA) -Reliable Hold (with hold proc in Freezing Touch) -Great Heal -Stacking Sleeps from GC and FA -Ice patch knock down -Damage debuff -Great Absorb (probably the most important) Slot for Def and Recharge to your taste, would definitely soft cap Energy Def first. Frosticus
When I build a "tough" melee character I look to the holes in the set and then how easily they can be patched. Holes include, but may not be limited to: resistance, defense, debuff resistance, mez protection, recovery, health and active mitigation Things like knockback protection (if lacking) and recovery tend to be a bit easier to patch up than say a lack of defense debuff resistance, or an entire damage type. While I'm not a big fan of the set I think a defensive spec bio with shadow meld, melee hybrid and barrier could survive just about anything. My own foray into /bio on a stalker had me pushing towards offense too much and it ended up being squishy. For my time investment I went with shield (savage/shield specifically). It's only real weaknesses are end drain, lack of a heal and no +perception. Most of which are very rarely a problem. I plugged them with ageless radial, melee hybrid and tactics. Ageless radial w/ shield also gives you SR levels of DDR, so that is nice. Depending on how you play, or more accurately - what you avoid, any armor set can be outstanding. For instance, Raluruu aren't a very good experience on my /shield. Devouring Earth gave me fits at +3/8 solo'ing the numina TF, but a no insp/temp/lore +4/8 ITF wasn't much of an issue for the same build. MTeague
My Spines/Regen stalker is suprisingly durable, and I have zero hesitation at soaking the alpha strike for teams if no one else seems inclined to tank. One nice thing about Regen is incoming damage type matters far less than it does to some other secondaries. It's all damage. You heal it back up. Between Resiliance, Tough, and varied set bonuses, I have about 55% Smashing/Lethal resist, and that's only at lvl 38. It's going to get better. He may well hit hardcap vs smashing/lethal, which REALLY shifts the curve on how well your regeneration keep you going. most other damage types he's at about 30% damage resist 27% melee defense, 29% ranged defense. Throw Spines, from Hide as a Forced Crit, is a wonderful opener if I want to soak the alpha as my team coming roaring right in a couple steps behind me. Ripper or Spine Burst is also good for AE if you're dealing iwth a giant pack of trash mobs, but still has a good single target rotation for when I just want to end bosses fast. Torrent with a KB-to-KD makes for a nice To-Hit debuff on a group, effectively improving my defense and the rest of the teams. thematically I also just love sets with a self-rez. No, I'm sorry, even if you beat me you didn't beat me. This guy literally cannot BE killed for good. KelvinKole
Thanks for all the input this far. I had kind of written off Bio Armor as I always designated it as an offensive set, but after giving it another look it can reach some pretty strong numbers. I came up with a spines/bio build that softcaps F/C/E/N with good resistance to S/L and high regen. I'm thinking i'll run efficient adaptation most of the time to support the endurance demands and get more regen. Would love some feedback from anyone who has tuned out a /Bio Stalker already. Croax
There is another Adaption than Offensive? (Just kidding) If you use DNA Siphon and Parasitic Aura on Cooldown, you will have no Problems with Endurance. A lot of /Bio users never change from offensive. I did see your build and took it as a challenge to get you some "Tough as Nails" results with the same powers that you choose. I could not resist to switch Mu Bolts to Zapp and make it usable and also i droped Assault for Haste. Everything else even the levels when you pick the powers are left the same as your post. Just changed slots and sets. The Incarnates are just a suggestion but i would like to point out that the Ageless radial has DDR which is nonexistent in Bio and therefore somewhat usefull. If you want to stay in Eff Adaption no matter what you will be at S/L resist cap. So i would call it tough. Here are some facts: 45% def to S/L/F/C/E/N 44% to melee. 69% S/L resist in offensive adaption. DNA Siphon/Ablative Carpace and Hasten are at near perma levels. perma with ageless. KelvinKole
Thanks @Croax! These are some pretty awesome numbers. My pockets aren't quite deep enough to plan for so many winter sets (too many alts to fund) but your build definitely shows how tough we can get. Do any bio users find the lack of DDR to be a major flaw? I've grown accustom to sets like invluvn, ice, and SR that all have some debuff resistance. Does Bio's defense get flatlined late game without ageless?

It's not just the lack of DDR but the lack of DDR coupled with the lack of S/L resist. Yes, you can barely stagger across the soft-cap for S/L with proper slotting - but that just means you have a 1-in-20 chance of the cascading defense failure occurring. Contrast with builds that go for 59% S/L defense coupled with DDR and can confidently charging into such spawns. I think */Bio is more of an 'adequate' defensive set than one I would consider for a 'tough as nails' build.

Other Sensor
My take on this project and currently my own via Savage/Invulnerability. Some of the proc'd out savage abilities could sacrifice damage for even more mitigation..... but isn't more damage technically mitigation too? 😛 Features perma-dull pain (5hp away from Stalker cap w/o accolades ~ 2083hp) Unleash Potential and Shadowmeld as "oh crap" buttons. Otherwise its pretty close to defense capped to most damage types except psionic, which has some semi-beefed up resistance. Snapshot before Incarnates / Enhancement Boosting: (Hide toggled) Snapshot before Incarnates / Enhancement Boosting: (Hide de-toggled to simulate -def suppression) (If defense caps before incarnates desired to be capped here, swap some winter io/other set bonues in for Oblieteration, etc.) Hero Plan by Mids' Reborn : Hero Designer 2.6.0.7https://github.com/ImaginaryDevelopment/imaginary-hero-designer Click this DataLink to open the build! Yoru-hime
How well does Weaken Resolve work on a Stalker fighting AV/GM-class enemies? I've been tempted to switch around my DB/EA to make room for Force of Will. She's got survivability and endurance to spare so if I can trade off a bit of that for some extra killing power against hard targets, that'd make her even more awesome. It's pretty solid considering you get -31.25% resist from it when achilles procs! Combine that with Fury of The Gladiator -Res and Reactive Core... Pretty hefty res debuffs.
hakurr
As far as stalkers go this is the build i run and i have solo'd ITF to about 3 hours but i did it with no deaths i ran alot of stalkers threw mid's and this is the best i could get for both Damage output and survivability. Stalker Dark Melee - Energy Aura.mxd Edited May 5, 2020 by hakurr i do appologize in mids i do have the wrong enhacement in Assassin's Strike but i did correct that in my actual build
Croax
Always put the Hide proc into Assassin's Strike. Also try Option->Configuration->Effects and Math-> Check "Attacked" This way you will see the real numbers in a fight. Yoru-hime
Here's what I'm working on. It was heavily inspired by SwitchFade's DB/EA posts, but I've made modifications to make room for Force of Will for Weaken Resolve. I'm not sure whether I want to keep the epic cone or go back to Tactics for the to-hit bonus. I'm in the upper 30s right now and she's already very hard to bring down unless something just ignores defense. Defense is 51% for S/L/F/C, 57% for energy and 47% for dark, with 62% resistance to S/L.
