Book Of Boba Fett

Recommended Posts

First teaser is out and they're not giving much away: though it seems being a respectable criminal on Tattoine probably isn't the easy life the big slug made it look like.

Thoughts? Mine in the spoiler tag:

Spoiler

So, Sopranos in Space or a galactic Godfather?

Not much action in what's clearly a very early teaser, relying on the menace of the Fandom's Ultimate Badass (well, except for Chewie). Given the series is probably about testing the limits of Boba's patience and vulnerabilities, he doesn't quite carry it off in the allotted 90 seconds. Still, will be giving it a watch.

I wonder how much of it will be negotiating with other factions, (aggressively or otherwise), and how much will be Boba doing bounty hunter stuff.  I also wonder if any of the series will be devoted to explaining his apparently difference in behavior between the original trilogy and the post-RotJ era.  I do hope the majority of the series does not take place on Tatooine, but I feel like we'll be seeing an awful lot of Jabba's palace.  I would like to see Boba run into at least 1 surviving clone - would make for an interesting exchange.  I also wonder if there will be any flashbacks to the events of the original trilogy, from Boba's perspective, (a la setting up Han's capture, etc).

I dunno, having had to escape from the intestines of 300 foot wide Venus Flytrap weighs on a man's mind a bit. Not to mention having several million identical clones of yourself running around the galaxy, and occasionally having to shoot yourself in the fac...

...unless...

Spoiler

THEORY: That's not Boba. It's Captain Rex or another clone cosplaying him as a search for meaning and a place in the new Universe - reclaiming their "father's" legacy. If it's as Impervium-y as canon suggests, Beskar would survive Sarlacc gastric juices with barely some tarnish to the paintwork, but the man inside might succumb to the acid fumes quite quickly.

Not quickly enough for it not to be a deeply unpleasant way to go: I once fancied myself a mystery writer, and had one unfortunate low-level villain disposed of by being locked in a pine wardrobe and put through the dip-and-strip process. Quite fun having a suburban, van-driving soccer Mom type running an extended crime family - and investigating crime herself.

And yes, if I'd ever had enough success in Whollyodd to pitch it, Amy Poehler, plus Olivia Colman basically playing my Mum as her intensely practical consigliere.

I'm intrigued, but I feel the fans would go into full riot mode if it played out that way.  People are far too connected to the character to have the story play out otherwise, and Disney is still skating on very thin ice with the fans after the Sequel Trilogy.

What I'm curious about is whether Dave Filoni is heavily involved in this, or too tied up with other projects.  He helmed Clone Wars which had several Boba stories showing a young Boba as walking a mental/emotional tightrope of sorts between being good and being bad.  I'd be interested to see if he's tapping that history to create the older character.

While the trailer didn't show much, it did show a great many aliens, including some never seen before in canon (notably the cyber-spider).  I think that's the take away, that the show is going to be rich in alien life, not just a bunch of humans with a smattering of aliens.

And yes, I'd like to see one of the clone troopers as well.  Rex is now canon for having fought on the moon of Endor.  It's possible he may still be around 9 years later.  Wolf possibly as well.

You do realize that Cobb Vanth is still around, still a lawman, and may therefore show up at some point in the BoBF?

Given Boba's trying to build a (criminal) society based on respect and co-operation rather than brutality, that scans.

According to IMDb:

  • It looks very much like a Favreau & Filoni show again, plus one of my favourite filmmakers - Robert "El Mariachi" Rodriguez - added to the topline team.
  • Kath Kennedy and Karen Gilchrist overseeing from LucasFilm.
  • Filoni's also written at least one episode, as has Favreau, Rodriguez and Bryce Dallas Howard, which they will also direct. Suspect the Mandalorian's chocolate box of writers and directors worked well last time, not just for giving lots of different creative perspectives, but also for scheduling and budgets.
  • Sorry Kiwi lunatic fans, Waititi isn't on the early list and is very busy with Love And Thunder and 800 other things. Hope he manage to squeeze one in.
  • Official producer producer is listed as John Bartnicki, who's been one of Favreau's regulars since Chef.
(By the way, do watch Chef. Great little movie. Not while you're hungry, mind.)

I've heard Waititi will be back acting in The Mandalorian again.  If true, I would assume this means he's voicing another IG-11 hunter droid.

I'm not familiar with Bordizzo, but strictly on that photo, she does bear a good resemblance to Sabine Wren.   She apparently doesn't have a deep body of work, so undoubtedly this will be her breakout role. IMDB.com says Bordizzo has a black belt in Taekwando, which is going to come in very handy when playing a signature Mandalorian.

The voice actors did such a good job, I'm a bit sorry that they didn't create Sabine as looking like Tiya Sircar so Tiya could play her in the live role, like they got Katee Sackhoff to do for her character.  For that matter, I could have wished Kallus was modeled on his voice actor, David Oyelowo, and for the same reason.

So, Ep1 just dropped, and here's your Boba tea:

Spoiler
  • Flashbacks. Many flashbacks, but nicely handled in context as Boba having PTSD dreams. Well, you try dealing with Sarlacc halitosis.
  • Theme of "respect is earned" running through this ep, from the Tusken kid arc through to the dealings with the casino.
  • Speaking of respect, the Mayor may need to show a bit more...
  • And whoever spawned that low-quality minion group ambush on Boba's party - that was just insulting.
  • That said, Uncle Bob is not in good shape. Sleeping in a Bacta tank indicates a major asskicking in recent events.

So: our Ultimate Badass (Chewie aside) is indeed both physically and mentally vulnerable and in need of strength, purpose... and respect.

But you need an element of risk when writing these kind of characters.

Every aspect of the episode seemed phoned in and it looked like a fan film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez who I usually love so I'm going to pretend he did this intentionally but it was really bad. Also Twi'lek orthodontia has evidently become super trendy in a short time.

All Twi'lek scenes were guest directed by Michael Bay.

I was not impressed with the premiere. A few bits looked good, but I agree that it felt phoned in.

I always have a problem with flashbacks when we know the outcome.  To me they are just filler.

I will watch to see where this i s going, but I don't want to watch to see where it has been.

I enjoyed it.

Having said that, the first episode of Mando was much superior.  The backstory of explaining how Fett escaped the Sarlacc and such was necessary plot exposition, but might have been better served by making it more brief and to the point, perhaps just with the scene of Fett escaping the Sarlacc and then having the character himself paraphrase the rest, like he was relating the tale to Fennec or something similar.  Then move on with the story in present day.

Apart from that, I think it was quite good and I have high hopes it will pick up and improve sharply in the next couple of episodes.  We shall see.

Perhaps time to see what hbo has to offer.

Eh, given the multiple things they were trying to juggle for a first episode, it worked, at least for me. Not the *most* exciting, but it's laying groundwork while answering some "ok, what happened between ROTJ and Mando?"

I don't expect this is going to be "flash flash bang speed speed faster faster" action, though. There'll be some of it, sure - it's Star Wars - but this is going to be a short crime boss drama. They don't *want* attention, after all. Too much attention's bad for business.

Primarily on Everlasting. Squid afficionado. Former creator of Copypastas. General smartalec.

I tried to combine Circle and DE, but all I got were garden variety evil mages.

Spoiler

I watched the 1st ep, and while it was entertaining, I'm having a hard time understanding why both Boba and Fennec were having such a hard time taking down those mercs when compared to the Stormtroopers he beat the snot out of in Mandalorian.  I chalk a lot of that trouble up to the handheld energy shields, which makes me wonder why they don't get used more often...

Replying to @biostem:

Spoiler

I guess Stormtroopers are the Level 1 Skuls of Star Wars canon (unlike real shock troopers, they seem to get deployed fresh from the tank/orphanage with basic equipment and little training, relying on overwhelming the opposition with massive numbers and aerial/orbital support). These guys seem a little better trained.

The ring of energy shields and close order combat also negate some of Boba's neater tricks - not enough room to pull a blaster, let alone risk a ricochet. Plus the wrist rocket and flamethrower would toast you. So the Sentinel and sniper Blaster are a bit stuffed surrounded by close-order Shield Brutes. Luckily, the Tanks showed up (late, must have been chasing a loose mob or AFK bio). Shoulda brought an empath, really.

And I don't like that but accept that.

When I want to try a new show, I normally skip the pilot.  The pilot is rarely good, even if the show is good.  It just tries to do too much instead of just being entertaining.

I know it's sort of a "meta" thing at this point, but it'd be interesting if they addressed why Boba never took his helmet off in the OT, even when he was by himself, on his own ship.

Spoiler

I'm also a bit confused by the whole bacta thing - my understanding is that you basically take a dunk in the stuff, and get healed after some time.  I wonder if Boba either has a chronic or degenerative condition, so he's just keeping it in check by all the dunks, or if maybe it's really just a mental issue at this point, and he's kind of relying on the bacta treatments as a sort of crutch or coping mechanism...

At a guess, Rule Of Cool applies. Even with Lucas's obsessively intricate backstories, I doubt there was any specific reason at the time why Boba never unmasked, other than it looked good and intimidating, and Lucas wouldn't have to pay image rights for the toys.

About the other thing...

Spoiler

Presumably there might be something in another flashback, but yer da survived a Sarlacc's stomach, the Tattooine sun unprotected, and that's just the flashbacks. He's not a young scamp any more, so sleeping in a Bacta tank might be just his equivalent of Daredevil's ice baths.

From a writer's point of view, though, it's a neat, 3-second shorthand for telling us something important from the get-go: that he's not in great shape and while still capable of much badassery, is certainly not invulnerable any more. After all, if there was no risk, you already know the ending.

Side note: your point about a bacta tank as a "coping mechanism" does have an Earth equivalent. Hyperbaric chambers are meant for specific medical treatments or accelerated healing for high-end sports.

However, as with most things where people with more money than sense can get hold of them, your assorted City/Wall St yuppie types are using them to get "sharper" and claim a whole bunch of benefits including decreased need for sleep, faster recovery times, sharper memory... and more psychological wellbeing. It's BS, naturally, but if they're happy and you're getting paid £300 a session to juice them on oxygen, are you gonna argue?
