Soooo, like the stupid American white boy that I am, I have been calling this group the Tsoo, pronounced like Sue, pretty much since Live.  I know, I know.

I've been bouncing around the internet for a little bit trying to find a proper pronunciation, but it seems like there's a pretty wide spectrum on offer.  Some people seem to pronounce it So or Sho, some Cho or Jho; the IPA guide on Wikipedia says it's pronounced Chu.  Several of these are not quite accurate, mind you; the pronunciations used don't quite fit the American alphabet in a few of those cases.

Does anyone have any input on how this term is actually supposed to be pronounced in Hmong?

Dananshan (most common) pronunciation of the ts consonant is the zh sound, which itself sounds like sh, so it would sound like "shoe".  Other dialects pronounce it the way it's spelled, ts.

Properly, it's spelled txo, which is pronounced shoe or tsoo (dependent on dialect (there are... fifteen, i think)).  Tsoo is the standardized English spelling.

And it means crash.

I've always pronounced it "Sue" as well and my extensive study of Chinese take out kinda makes me an expert, no big deal.

Interesting.  First I've heard of this.  I always assumed that it was translated into English more or less phonetically (why would people do otherwise?  And yes, I know the "otherwise" is done all the time.)  I've always pronounced it with a hint of a T at the start of "sue", but now I'm curious as well.

What does this mean for the name Cub Ti?  I've been pronouncing it just as it looks in English:  "cub" like a bear cub, and "tea" like the fluid which fills British veins.

I'm now expecting to hear that "Yum Sauce" is pronounced completely different to what I've been saying for decades.

Tso is sow, as in the female pig.  The T is completely silent in this word.

I cannot offer proper Hmong pronounciation but standard transliteration of Japanese  つ is "Tsu" which is how I pronounce Tsoo.

The issue with these transliterations of origin characters to Roman characters is that we doesn't capture the lingual mechanics of the speech.

All that to say: "Sue" is fine, but start with the tip of your tongue pressed gently to where the back of your front teeth meet the roof of your mouth. It will create a bit of an aspirated break that I believe is appropriate for pronouncing Tsu, if not Tsoo.

I can't even get "hover" right from what I hear on the Discord. Nor Striga, Cimerora, Croatoa or Eochai. And never ask Snarky how he pronounces "melee". You can't unhear it.

The only easy thing about German (so far) is the way it is spelled is how it sounds.  Me Lee just looked right.  And i only encountered it in books for ?a decade?  Whoever did not spell it may-lay.  Blame them.

Due to my experience, I tend to pronounce it as I would in Japanese it like this (using katakana to represent it):

ツー

There's a city near me that actually has that name but without the long vowel version :P.
