It would be great to see a hardcore server on Homecoming. Where if you die=character deleted (unplayable). Essentially hardcore from Wow just in CoH.

ALSO, it wouldn't allow a smart vendor and you had to slot into fitness, Like the live servers.

Personally i think this would be super fun and exciting. Encouraging more playthrough of contact missions and people playing more carefully aligned to their roles. Blasters would be less hesitant to jump and nuke in, controllers more aware of aggro, scrappers and stalkers not daring to tank, and tank more aware of squishies.

Please show this some love if you agree and maybe the Devs will hear our prayers! I think this would bring ALOT of people back into our glorious fold.

This should be in the Suggestions section.

I'm in two minds about this. I like the idea in principle, but if I were to get a character to 50, and make a good build and then things went south and I'd spent maybe a billion on that build, I'd be more than a bit peeved if I couldn't get my stuff back at the very least.

I also think that whilst this may appeal to a tiny minority of players, it would effectively be a ghost town, and already many of the other shards are very low pop.

The amount of work necessary to create this for the practical gains I fear wouldn't be justifiable.

How the hell am I even supposed to know if ignorance is bliss?

There are already people who play this way without it being automatic or requiring its own shard. I suggest trying to seek them out and join them. Using the START vendor is a choice, and if you want to delete and rerole after a defeat, you can. Health and Stamina you are stuck with, but you could choose not to slot them.

This topic has been brought up every so often, if you wish to read some comments....

Well there isn't one for Homecoming, you could make a character at Thunderspy as they have what they call Ironman mode which if your character has one life.

The various server groups have tried not to replicate each other's work over the last 6 years.

I don’t see this happening for 1 reason in particular: it would require the devs maintain 2 code bases.

What this team needs is more Defenders

I mean, I definitely hold a lot of nostalgia for the Diablo 2 Hardcore days.  I won't say it was fun looking at the "Your Deeds of Valor shall be long remembered" screen looking down at the body of my lvl 87 paladin. But it was a huge adrenalin rush playing hardcore mode.  So I can sorta see the appeal.

But while I do not oppose the idea in principle, if it were implemented, I can say for sure that I would never use it. Hardcore / Permadeath modes work best when the game is designed around it from Day 1. And when mobs you encounter and powerset builds are designed around it from Day 1. Trying to jury-rig it into an existing game feels like a lost cause.  The Dev Team would to make a statement up front whether any content was / would ever be redesigned with the possibility of an official Permadeath mode in mind.  The "lucky" GM's would then need to stick to that, even when scads of complaints come in that griefing occurred, or why something was "unfair" and people want their characters restored. It feels like a dog's dinner for the GM's to have to handle hardcore related complaints.

But hey, if that's something they feel is beneficial, OK.  I'll never participate, but OK.

Will post into that section....

But according to your example yeah...thats exactly the point. To push you to be careful in situations. To discuss fights and mechanics before everyone just jumps in. You would build your character to survive any bad situations that could occur. You would build team comps to ensure survival. Healers would be actually useful.

On top everything i think it would bring a new player base to the game. Twitch streams would go crazy. Youtube content etc etc. This is a great game and would pull people in to normal servers as well.

You should read the other HC thread posted above.   You're giving the same arguments as the other poster.

Yes i am sure i am but that's also the point of me bringing it up again to show that there is interest in this.

I think you may be overestimating how much interest there would actually be.

As for forcing people to think and play as a team - you could always put restrictions on teams you form.

4 man +4x8 runs.

No enhancements.

No incarnates.

etc.

Heck, you could even advertise that a death leads to being kicked from the team.

A server-enforced permadeath would require more "skin in the game" from player than just a gentleman's agreement that they might or might not make good on. Especially if you have people just dipping their toes in, they might simply refuse to delete... even if some of their antics caused a team wipe.

So I get where the OP is coming from.

As I said, I'm not against the idea as such. I just would never partake, either.

No thank you.

The tools to play this way already exist in game. You can just not go to the START vendor. You can add slots to the fitness pool. You can slot the fitness pool like you would have on live. You can delete your character when you die.

The tricky part might be assembling a team of like-minded folks who also want to play this way. Folks have advertised for static teams with specific rules on the forums before, and seem to have been successful. Good Luck!

This subject comes up every year with the same result: it's requested by less than 1% of the server population. If there were a demand for such a server, it would have existed years ago.

I wouldn't mind at all, and could be cool, but things have to always be looked at in a dev time/value formula.  I can't speak on the technicals, but probably not worth it.  Especially when suggesting things like altering powers, that they'd then have to maintain as different code for a distinct server.

Even if it was set up, you'd then have people saying it should then be this way or that way.  Things like should there be an auction house, should there be IO's, should certain whole AT's be allowed (I've seen people run hardcore groups already where they say tanks and brutes aren't allowed as it'd be too easy, which isn't wrong), should START be allowed, are self rezzes allowed?  If not, do we get rid of/change rez powers?....and 100 other variables.

Honestly, just making it hardcore without quite a few other changes I don't think would even mean much.  At normal difficulty, it is kind of hard to die in this game really.   Almost always my deaths are when I'm on a team with things cranked up.  You'd probably have to implement a harder 'normal' difficulty to for it to mean anything.  There's another coding change.

Assuming we just ignore the people that would just still level to 50 as a 'sitter' with no risk.

I offer some suggestions on hard mode in our game.  Do not use P2W, and delete the character if you die.  Also, if you fall below 25% health drop a brick on your foot.  Feel it.

I think a Hardcore server wouldn't really jive with the game's T rating!

Oh wait, that's the wrong kind of 'hardcore'

Honestly I wouldn't want this, Hardcore in this game is very easy if you just don't go out of your way to take risk. If you just take it slow, play something like a tank or keep the difficulty low you can breeze through it making a server where that's mechanically enforce kinda pointless. Everyone I know who takes up this challenge often has to tack on a ton of other rules or there is never stakes. On top of that, this game is EXTREMELY RNG heavy, death can often happen when the numbers just don't go your way there are obviously ways to mitigate this, but it's a big part of this game, sometimes you do everything right and die to the enemy getting good rolls. That's not even to go into the difficulty in setting this up as a server structure, alot of the code would need to likely be custom written into code the OG devs referred to as "spaghetti code" to implement what is already a niche challenge mode that is already played, and likely would still require personal rules to make interesting. I'm not trying to say there isn't some kinda potential here, but this is a volunteer dev team that already has alot on their plate, I just don't see this happening. Especially for something that can already be done with a little honor.

I think adding a tracker for player deaths to the city information terminal though could be a nice idea that likely wouldn't be too difficult, that way you could at least have proof, but otherwise I think it would be a waste of development time and effort.

This is going to end up with people mentioning an event server (again) and suggest things like vanilla coh or older issues ran on a event server like a diablo season (again).

We've been here many times.

on the fr, i would love a server of coh that replayed the launch of the game up until like CoV, including the time gaps inbetween issues.  I don't even know if Homecoming has access to those versions of the game though lol
