Thought experiment (status effects)
PeregrineFalcon replied to Luminara's topic in General Discussion
Thank you for this thought experiment. It's interesting to think about and discuss. I play a lot of MMOs and table top RPGs, and mez or controls are always a problem. I call it the "Boss Problem." Players generally don't want to mez trash mobs or even "Lieutenants", they just kill them fast enough that they're not an issue, they want to mez the Boss. Whether it's called a Boss, an EB, a Veteran, a Champion, a GM, a BBEG or an Ancient Dragon. It's the boss monster that they want to mez, and of course developers (and DM's) don't want the players to be able to mez their boss monster. So as a game designer, how do you make mezzes something that players actually want to use without making them game breaking? To quote Private Grif: "I don't know man, but it keeps me up at night." And at this point I don't think there's anything the Homecoming team can really do to fix it. Any rework of the Mez System, even a minor one, is likely to change so many things that the game that came out the other end probably wouldn't look a lot like City of Heroes anymore. -
Thought experiment (AoE buffs/debuffs/controls/damage)

Why? It would make Melt Armor worth actually using on AVs and GMs. -
Sins of the Devs are visited upon the players

It wasn't just you. He did it to a bunch of people. I'm seeing his thumbs down in tons of threads that are over a year old. It looks like he's some angry PvPer who thinks that a thumbs down will hurt us in some way. Personally, I take a thumbs down as a badge of honor, much like a warning point. Both say to me "the other person couldn't admit that they're wrong so they had to take action to try to silence me." -

Try giving negative feedback in the feedback threads on this forum and see how many of your concerns get dismissed as the mods delete your posts while allowing the insulting posts from the dev defenders to remain. And yes, I am aware that he meant within the CoH game setting. That's also how I meant it, and he's not wrong. The people who do want to nerf everything in conjunction with the AE are very intolerant of other opinions. -

Imagine thinking that people can't be intolerant in 2022. -

Sins of the Devs are visited upon the players

The PvPers on the Homecoming forums are still fighting the war in their minds with the Paragon developers. So they come on here and valiantly defend PvP and attack anyone who doesn't like CoH PvP all the while saying "PvPers aren't insulting, it's the PvEers who are like that." "Oh, they're not horribly insulting, it's just standard trash talk." Yeah, it's that "standard trash talk" as ForeverLaxx put it that people don't want to put up with. I too have been playing video games since the 70's. I still have the same email address that I had in 1996. I literally have saved emails that are older than my children, both of whom can drive and vote now. So I've been on the internet since before 99% of the planet. Every online game I've seen without PvP people are nice and go out of their way to help each other. Games with PvP, well LoL everyone. That's "standard trash talk." Am I the only person that remembers the forum threads right before the PvP changes went live with Issue 13? The PvPers made a thread appealing to the PvE player base asking them to join the fight to stop the devs from changing PvP. That thread will filled full of PvEers refusing to help and specifically citing the abuse and insults that they've endured from PvPers over the years. And this wasn't just a couple of forum posters, it was hundreds. So understand that anyone who says that PvPers aren't insulting and abusive is trying to gaslight you. They're saying that 90% of the playerbase is just imagining abuse and insults. That we're ALL wrong. That we're just misremembering or that we're crazy. Yeah, whatever. Go try that gaslighting stuff on someone else. -

Classification on melee types

See, this is where a lot of people get confused. Superman is clearly a tank, so is The Juggernaut, so is Kingpin. But one is clearly far more powerful than the others. One is an Incarnate, one is just level 50, and the other is probably level 35-ish. But they're all still tanks. People will say that someone can't be a tank because they're not as tough as Superman or Galactus, but they forget that it's more about role than about actual level of power. Just as an example, you could make the argument that Condorman is a level 5 Tank. Can you tell I've had these discussions before? -
Yes, The Kurgan is clearly a BS/WP Brute. (Tank maybe... ok, probably not.) Happy Halloween, Ladies! Nuns. No sense of humor.

Classification on melee types

So the reason why I say Spiderman is an SR Tank is because he acts like one. He avoids hits. Taunts his opponents. And the few times he's teamed up he obviously tries to keep the villains focused on him instead of on his teammates. Sure, he clearly doesn't have any IOs or Incarnate powers or even the Fighting Pool, so he's not as tough as some of the other Tanks we've seen in comics, but he acts like a Tank. -

Wolverine is a Claws/Will Scrapper with the Stealth Pool. Spiderman is a SR/StJ Tanker. Also, HULK SMASH!!! Clearly the blueprint for the entire Brute AT. -
Are you serious? What's Superman if not a Tank? He certainly isn't a Brute. A calm demeanor is his thing, not unbridled fury. Anyway, it's a bad comparison. The Marvel Superheroes game (I remember FASERIP very well) wasn't set up around the Trinity, CoH was.
-
I'm sorry no one has responded to your request. And, unfortunately, I can't help you a Brute build. However, I can ask @Bill Z Bubba and @Snarky about this. Both of them are very much into Brutes. Hopefully one of them will be willing to help you out.
-
Dude, seriously? How could you not make a Broadsword/Willpower Scrapper (or Brute)? There can be only one!
-
Add in a -Endurance Cost or +Recovery and I'll sign off on it.
-
Know who I really miss? Venture. I was really hoping that he'd start doing mission reviews again. .
-
I don't think you're being negative, I think you're just stating the truth. However, I think the problem is that the devs don't know what to do with Brutes. They know there's a problem but don't know how to fix it. Tankers and Scrappers are easy, they both have defined roles. But what's the Brute's role? To be a tank or a melee DPS? Brutes were specifically designed to be a bit of both, so now that the AT's are no longer trapped on their respective sides the devs can either try to balance them on the razor's edge by making them a bit of both, but not better than the specific AT at either, or completely remake them with a different role altogether. It's not an easy problem to solve.
-
Wait, what? Someone remembers me from the original forums? Hey! I'm famous, ya'll!!! 😁
-
In my opinion they should replace the special bonuses from the Brute ATO's with the same exact bonuses the Tanker ATO's have. So instead of bonues to Fury generation they'd have the same bonus to resistance and chance to absorb that the Tanker ATO's provide.
-
The inability to resist peer pressure is not sufficient reason to nerf an ability which isn't overpowered to begin with. Grow a spine and ignore the requirements of people you don't want to game with anyway. Or form your own team and make sure to let people know that you don't require specific builds.
-
Hey! At least it wasn't me this time. Yes. I was Peregrine Falcon on the retail forums and in game, and on every forum I've been on and game I've played since then.

Sins of the Devs are visited upon the players
PeregrineFalcon replied to The_Warpact's topic in General Discussion
Back in one of the threads where we were complaining about the addition of that weird sort-of combo gimmick to Energy Melee, someone referred to the developers as "The Council of Thirteen." I use it now and then just because I like the sound of it. -

No, I don't. I stand by what I said. This is a Superhero/Supervillain game. Not Farm Simulator. I don't know if the devs should nerf farming or not, but then I don't have access to the game economic data like they do. I think it's clear that they're going to nerf farming hard at some point. When they do, they'll ignore your complaints just like they ignored the complaints others had about: 1) Adding a weird combo mechanic to Energy Melee, 2) Adding a weird combo mechanic to Sorcery Pool, 3) Removing the base teleport macro, 4) Nerfing Rune of Protection. And I'm sure there's plenty of others that I can't remember right now. This has been The Council of Thirteen's MO since they started releasing updates. -
