Its time to lock up Blue Steel
Grouchybeast replied to Llewellyn Blackwell's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
The way I've always looked at things, Word of God is pretty worthless. If something isn't actually in canon, then it doesn't count. I don't care what some dev said at some later point -- if they wanted the readers to know something, they should put it in the source material. A creator's later opinions about what the source material should really say isn't worth any more than anyone else's. 14-20 seems like a pretty reasonable age range for 'young man' to me. I might even nudge it a bit older, up to low 20s. -
[Afterburner] +def -fly protection ... only effecting self?
Grouchybeast replied to Joshex's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
There's no high enough cost, because squishy characters like Blasters are not meant to have access to powers that give them 18.8% Def to all. That is why they are called squishy characters. -
[Afterburner] +def -fly protection ... only effecting self?
Grouchybeast replied to Joshex's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Honestly, my main feeling is that min-maxing one's way to a soft-capped squishy character should at least take some design effort, tradeoffs and sacrifices. At the very least, it should require more effort than taking Hover and Fly, and then tripping up and falling face first into power that grants 18.8% defense. That is brokenly OP. -
You could have saved a lot of aggravation if you'd started off your post with 'If you are a dedicated min-maxer who refuses to compromise to any degree on character performance, then power pools are set unless you specifically build against them...' etc etc. I don't think people would have disagreed with that. It's a self-imposed problem for a small subset of the playing population.

[Afterburner] +def -fly protection ... only effecting self?
Grouchybeast replied to Joshex's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Afterburner is a power meant to significantly raise the Flight speed cap, outside of combat, with the limitation of Only Affecting Self to stop it being overwhelmingly better than other travel powers. The +Def is simply a nice bonus to help avoid snipers while travelling. Everything about Afterburner is WAI. -
Make Burn work like this again?
Grouchybeast replied to Solarverse's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
That would be hilarious. *drops Burn* *rest of the team takes down almost all mobs with their AoE* *massive burst of Burn damage takes the final 5hp off the last boss standing* -
city of villains New Redside Content: AMBITIONS
Grouchybeast replied to TalynDerre's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
It would still always feel like a second-best let's pretend to me. The fact that my character was LARPing around Paragon rather than standing in the AE building wouldn't really change that. On the other hand, I'm all for the devs taking suitable AE arcs and properly integrating them into the game. I think that would be an excellent option for a volunteer-run game. -
city of villains New Redside Content: AMBITIONS
Grouchybeast replied to TalynDerre's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
AE missions are fine, they can be fun, but they're playing pretend inside a world that's already playing pretend. I, and I'm going to guess quite a few other players, are never going to find them as satisfying as content integrated with the rest of the game world. -
Good duo with 9yr old Water/Storm Corrupter?
Grouchybeast replied to MagmaticTitan's topic in General Discussion
But ALWAYS make sure that she zones first. A zoning Beast MM is the most upsetting thing in this game. -
Do you play a lot of flying characters? The invasion mobs will only spawn if you are on/near the ground.

The original discussion thread was 66 pages long. This one is 7. The shutting up has already largely happened.

Make Mayhem Missions More Rewarding
Grouchybeast replied to Darkneblade's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
You can run any of the mayhem or safeguard missions as many times as you like from Lord Schweinzer or Agent Hassell. It's probably less than a minute in and out, especially for the safeguards where you only need to speed to the bank and defeat the villains as they spawn. -
It's a Heroclix figure. ETA: I just went looking to see if I ever threw out any of my old CoX stuff. I thought I might have, because we moved house after the live sunset. But no, I still have my CoV Collector's Edition box complete with Heroclix figures.

Attuning the ATOs is fine. The superiors are basically a different set with higher bonuses. The only reason you might not want to attune an ATO set at 50 is if you particularly want to keep the lower bonuses, if the Superior set bonuses would violate the rule of five.

Make Mayhem Missions More Rewarding
Grouchybeast replied to Darkneblade's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Maaaaybe one merit per run? Or a higher reward that's capped at once per day? They're infinitely and instantly repeatable missions that take very little time to complete. -
Remove Personal Force Field from Fake Nemesis
Grouchybeast replied to GastlyGibus's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
I don't think this is true Someone in this thread checked all the enemy powers, and only a handful have more than one positional tag. -
I can see up to level 50 missions for red and bluside. I'm using Foxit Reader, just in case that makes any difference.

Should Entrapment be against the EULA?
Grouchybeast replied to Solarverse's topic in General Discussion
I think punishing both parties is a fine idea when you're wrangling two kids under ten in the back of a car on a long journey. I think with adults the onus is on them to use the block facilities available on the forums and in-game to manage their own online experience. -
The thing is, we already know what happens when someone takes a control power that has a very minor negative effect on their team mates' playing experience: knockback. It doesn't, by and large, lead to any interesting tactical discussions or people considering how best to maximize utility, it just leads to people not wanting to team with characters that have knockback, or complaining that everyone doesn't 'do the right thing' and change all their kb to kd. I'm skeptical that exponentially increasing the chance of negative effects from other team members' powers will suddenly have the opposite effect and make everyone embrace complexity. I think that past performance will be very much indicative of future results, and people will have little interest in 'requiring planning every time you join up on a team', when they can simply switch to preferring single target powersets and suggesting that characters with AOE powersets would be better off playing solo. This concept could be great in a game build from the ground up for friendly fire. But this is a game very much not built for that, with a large number of existing powersets that would require substantial revision (ending up with a mess of exceptions and special cases) and with a playerbase that is already proveably unenthusiastic about even minor negative effects on team play.

It's a protective mechanism evolved by forums to defend themselves from irritation. We're like oysters, in a way.
-
Leaving aside griefing, the internet can be laggy, and characters and mobs not always where they look to be on the screen. At the moment that doesn't matter very much, but it definitely would with friendly fire. Powers like Fulcrum Shift or Heat Loss would either need to be completely reworked, or to have special case rules attached to them to keep them functioning as they do now.

Best "alignment" for a Pure-Praetorian?
Grouchybeast replied to Lazarillo's topic in General Discussion
This is Who fandom in a nutshell. Whoever is currently in charge of the franchise is destroying it, burning it to the ground, salting the earth behind them, everything is awful, flee to the hills the end times are upon us. It's amazing it's lasted so long considering how many times it's been destroyed. The only good time to be a Who producer is when the current one is leaving (rejoice! rejoice!) and you've just been announced as their successor. Then, for a brief moment, you are the sainted saviour Who will lead us from the wilderness.
