I guess in CoH Market terms that would make me the guy who comes around from time to time in the morning offering to sweep the stoop for a few bucks. 😆

Congrats to @Icono04 and many thanks to @Yomo Kimyata for hosting the contest and the bonus prizes!  Thought of many, more original, concepts for the combo I submitted after the fact - Swim Coach, Lunch Lady, mostly school related I suppose.  Maybe I'll spin one up as a counterpart to the fire/mc I've been running.

Either way, from where I'm sitting 500mil is a big stack to work with all at once.  Usually if one of my (comparatively very few) 50s has more than 25mil on hand it's ear-marked for finishing out the build. 🤣

Mostly unrelated, celebratory dance gif in 3 ...

Ice/Ninjitsu!

Name: NicetoMeetTsoo

The Backstory:

The ancestor spirt stood and waited while the sorcerers glanced at each other worryingly. Something was terribly wrong with this Genin. When separated from it's master, most Ninjas will leap back into the shadows and return but this one....he just stayed passively near the warehouses single exit not saying a word.  They stared back cautiously. Surely, it had to be a trap.   Finally, the lead sorcerer spoke up.  "Uh, Do you.....want to come with us?" he said slowly.  His eyes shifted slowly towards the sorcerer.  "I will follow you, my master". He said in a deep voice.

The rest is history. Eventually, he was accepted into the fold, and even learned to manipulate to arcane tattoo ink that gave the Tsoo their power.  Until one day, as the group was moving on to a new home base, he disappeared.  As they passed the threshold out into the street, from behind they heard him whisper "Into the shadows..." as he vanished in a wisp of smoke.  They didn't follow.  He had served well, and his life was now his own.

The Build:

Softcaped to S/l with a Range is 30 (when +5'd).  Incarnates are dealers choice, but I like to go with Intuition Radial, Assault Radial Hybrid, Degenerative Core, and swap between Clarion/Ageless depending on what I'm up to.

At 50, 4x8 is totally doable (tested on Rikti, Carnies, and Malta).  the -tohit in blizzard keeps things from getting too messy while it does it's thing. Aid Self is a nice crutch, but droppable.  Focus on the bosses first, hit them with a couple holds to lock them down, than spring attack in and slice away!  AoE is very light before blizzard, but (solo) it's up for every group, especially if you swap one of the damage procs in Golden Dragonfly with a FF+rech!  AVs though, is where this shines.  Pylons go down in 1:25 (no hybrid, lore, or insps), and when you really want to open up the taps, pop some reds to damage cap turn on hybrid, and that things dropping in 45-50 seconds.

I am outraged, OUTRAGED, that most of the Atomic powers only take Accurate Defense Debuff IOs instead of both Accurate and regular Defense Debuff IOs.  Hello?  Achilles Heel?!?  I guess I have to settle for it in Beta Decay.

You'll be happy to find that what's in-game and what's in-Mid's are two different things. You can actually slot the regular Def Debuff sets in several of those powers unlike how Mid's is coded, my biggest point of contention for this is Negatron Slam of which I have an Achilles proc slotted in-game, but Mid's does not allow for.

I'm not nearly as good at building ranged defense as I am at building melee defense.

I would dare argue that Atomic is a case of secondaries where having S/L/E is probably going to be favored over Ranged since you'll find yourself far more often actually up-front and personal with enemies due to things like Beta Decay and Atom Smasher.

Actually back-pocketed a Dark/Atomic build during Mad King experiments, have one on hand that covers pretty much everything but a few points of defense (grab a base defense buff or... well just about anything you want will fill the gap in-game).

Thanks for posting this.  I really like this build: the Alpha slot choice (Intuition radial) is brilliant.  I wish I had a better grasp on the options beyond Musculature and to a lesser degree Agility.  I tried to experiment with Nerve for bit but beta client performance (even 32-bit) is far to choppy to run for very long or give me a realistic idea of how something plays.

You see a mousetrap? I see free cheese and a f$%^ing challenge.

WOOHOO! Time for the classic "Me? Little old me?! But, but, but, I never win anything!" speech. Which I totally haven't practiced in front of the mirror for days... 😉

Seriously, though - thanks a ton for this, @Yomo Kimyata. Your timing is brilliant, I have a couple of new build ideas I want to try but didn't have the inf to pay for them. Forum PM sent just now.

The build I use is below. Only ranged attacks, per my personal preference. FWIW this build cost me ~350 million.

90% of the time my attack rotation is just Umbral Torrent, Moonbeam and Life Drain. Everything else is situational. Originally I had this kooky idea that Abyssal Gaze and Positron Cell could be useful for the Hami part of LGTF but have never gotten around to trying it.

My own dark/atomic is full t4 incarnate, those of you who play on Reunion might recognize the name from the casual Friday iTrials.

I have that same snob bias as yourself re. the very popular powersets, so it feels good to have my view validated.  😄

Thanks again and have fun with your new blaster!

Ok, apparently the voices in my head are telling me that there is absolutely no reason I *can't* give you all prizes.  So 500mm inf to each of the entrants!

That is incredibly generous of you! I'll pm but my global is the same as my forum handle (this has prompted me to capitalise my forum handle which I've meaning to do for ages).

Dark/atomic will be an interesting combination for sure. I've been meaning to make an atomic for ages, probably pairing it with radiation blast for the pbaoe and holds (I'm too lazy to reposition during combat!).

This is how I built mine.

One of a few melee blasters that I didn't go defense shield with. I really wanted posi fist AND knockout blow.

You'll be hopping in and out of melee a lot due to the cones, and that's one of the other reasons I didn't go full on S/L softcap, but mostly because of KO blow.

Pro tip jump up when you use umbral torrent so you don't tag the next two spawns with it. I find the long range of the power annoying AF but I don't hover blast.

Ok, apparently the voices in my head are telling me that there is absolutely no reason I *can't* give you all prizes.  So 500mm inf to each of the entrants!

Thanks for offering, YK: it was truly fun just to be considered, and I do appreciate your generosity.  However, I don't really need 500M Inf, so feel free to give it to someone else who does.  😊

I'm just not "here's 8 billions in a fingersnap" good.  You know?

I’ve been thinking about why everyone in the MCU snapped when using the Infinity Gauntlet, and the only reason I can see is that Gamora described it as “easy as snapping your fingers.”  What if she had said, “easy as picking your nose”?

Sent.  And one of my early creations on HC was an AR/Martial blaster.  Ki push then target practice is so zen, but I can't level to 50 that way.  Or can I?

Thank you!

I guess you could get bored of Ki Push before level 50, but that's why it's important to mix it up by kicking mobs in the face in various other ways, too.

I stumbled upon the One Of The Eight badge while leveling my Fire/Martial.  I briefly considered making 7 more /Martial variants (or just blasters, or ???) and having all of them wear the same badge title. So many tempting combinations. Ki Push just doesn't get old.  It's like a good volleyball partner who knows how to setup the death-stroke.

But who's got that sort of time! 🤣

So, I've been leveling my Dark/Atomic blaster in Praetoria/First Ward/Night Ward, and I've been playing her organically, meaning that I'm adding slots and powers where I need/want them rather than focusing on an end build.  My initial look at this from a lvl 50 would be as a mostly melee based character, but as of now (at 27) she's been mostly a ranged character.  In fact, she plays a lot like a controller, with Positron Cell and Abyssal Gaze as controls while "arresting" with other powers.

My thought process on powers:

Primary:

Gloom or Dark Blast.  I dislike DoT, especially ranged DoT.  I end up overkilling constantly.  But I cannot reconcile choosing Dark Blast over Gloom on how I see the numbers.

Tenebrous Tentacles.  I can't do it.  I just can't

Everything else I take.

Secondary:

Atomic is too good on paper.  I can't bring myself to skip any of them.

I'm trying to work out a few issues:

Do I slot my holds for hold or damage or procs?  Right now I'm leaning on 2- or 4- slotting them with Basilisk Gaze for the ranged D.

Beta Decay seems too good not to 4 slot.  I'd love to 4-slot Metabolic Acceleration as well.

I really have no idea how to slot Life Drain.  It seems of much higher use as a defensive power than an offensive one.

Then I'm just screwing around with slot allocation.  Am I better off 3 slotting 2 defense powers or 4 slotting one and 2 slotting another.

So far, it's been a blast though.  Here's my current thought process on my future build:

Who run Bartertown?

I'm trying to work out a few issues:

From my perspective:

  • Abyssal Gaze is actually a pretty solid attack on its own right, the hold aspect means you get to drop a ton of procs into it and it becomes a beefy power to throw around, I definitely wouldn't trade off that opportunity, especially considering it ends up making it one of the stronger attacks in rotation. Positron Cell on the other hand is somewhat garbage unless you're desperate for the hold/mule (personal opinion). On my Ice/Atomic I have access to three holds and the hold AoE, took two, still nothing ever lives long enough for me to notice/care if a hold ever sticks in the first place and Dark has more effective (faster) AoE/Cones.
  • There's a couple of decent 4-piece options for -ToHit that can go into Beta Decay, but my experience with Atomic has been that unless I was under constant mez protection or Clarion, I found myself missing that a random blip of a sleep or a hold or a whatever had dropped Beta often enough that it was irritating. I wouldn't ever consider excluding it from the build, but I also tend not to expect anything from it other than "nice to have" which has since always had me hesitant to invest more than an Achilles -Res and an Enzyme. Metabolic on the other hand, there's several good procs you can toss in there and a little health bump gets it going well enough.
  • You only need to devote two slots to the healing aspect of Life Drain with a couple of boosters to be a max value. Preventative Medicine is a good option (Heal, Heal/End at +5 will give 2.5% S/L bonus and 18.5% Heal). That leaves you the other four slots to do with...whatever. Or go five slots of something like Superior WO's for the 5% E/N and a +5'd Heal IO. If you just want it as a heal, however, four slots max, make it hit, get your heal, move on, its DPA just isn't there compared to many of your other abilities (even Electron Shackles is better).

I'm trying to work out a few issues:

Do I slot my holds for hold or damage or procs?  Right now I'm leaning on 2- or 4- slotting them with Basilisk Gaze for the ranged D.

I really have no idea how to slot Life Drain.  It seems of much higher use as a defensive power than an offensive one.

Damage over Time takes some getting used to. A couple of rando comments;

  • There is no such thing as "over kill" when a Paragon Protector goes Moment of Glory.
  • Switch targets frequently. As my Dark Blaster became more able to tackle/survive large spawns, he barely minds the overkills.

I also don't take Tenebrous Tentacles. I could slot it into my build nicely (at level 44) and I have often considered it over the Knockback power (Repulsion Bomb) that I have there... but I sort of like the "get the H3!! away from me' aspect of Repulsion Bomb.

My slotting of Life Drain is:

Level 26: Life Drain -- TchoftheN-Heal:50(A), TchoftheN-Acc/Heal:50(29), TchoftheN-%Dam:50(29), GldJvl-Acc/Dmg:50(31), GldJvl-Dam%:30(31), CldSns-%Dam:30(31)

For me, this struck the right balance between: Accuracy (including a Global boost), Recovery and Damage (via %procs)

My Dark Blaster build only has two powers trying to leverage %damage procs: Umbral Torrent (it is a cone, so consider boosting the range in this!) and Life Drain. Other powers get a %damage proc as part of a set, and two powers (Moonbeam and Blackstar) have a 6th piece using a %damage proc. My Secondary is Temporal, so I can't comment on the secondary.

I would be skeptical on trying to turn the hold (Abyssal Gaze) into a %damage proc monster on a Blaster. My opinion only:

  • The HOLD is probably going to provide more utility than the extra %damage.
  • Hold sets offer some pretty nice set bonuses. I especially like Gladiator's Net for Blasters.

Defcon Zer0 is now at level 39, has graduated from Praetoria's Night Ward, and has moved on to dirty deeds in the Rogue Isles.  Her play style has started to integrate a lot more melee now, and that will increase as I get more defense and more slots in Positronic Fist.  I've learned a lot of good things (and face planted a LOT).  Here's what I'm planning out at this point:

Dark Blast:

Gloom -- I figure both the Blaster ATOs really should be 6-slotted, and I just put Defiant Barrage in here.  I can fire it when mezzed, but I don't know if the proc triggers whether it will automatically take me out of mez.  I guess I'll find out.

Umbral Torrent -- A great power.  The hard part is figuring out which procs to keep in there.  Eventually I will 5-proc it (currently thinking Overwhelming Force, Force Feedback, Cloud Senses, Annihilation, Bombardment) and use a Lysosome for the 6th slot.  Eventually I'll have a ton of +accuracy from purple set bonuses, but I'm not there just yet.  Also, ranged -to hit is a good thing.  The range on this though is a little irksome, and it's taken some practice to not aggro the next four spawns down the hallway.

Moonbeam -- 5 slotted with Sting of the Manticore.  I'll swap out to Decimation for exemplaring if it comes to that.

Aim -- I'm wrestling between 1-slotting this with Gaussians proc and 2-slotting Ionize eventually with two pieces of Rectified Reticle or vice versa.

Abyssal Gaze -- Right now I'm getting more use out of this as a control than a ST attack.  4-slot Basilisk.

Life Drain -- I've realized that the base heal is low enough that I'm better off slotting for damage than healing.  If it's not going to give me 1/2 my health back in one shot, let's use it as my third ST damage power (in addition to Gloom and Moonbeam).  Eventually, I'm thinking 5 slots for superior Winters Bite and 1 for Theft of Essence end proc because who can give up extra end?

Blackstar -- I love it.  But the animation is too long for me to reliably lead with it.  So Umbral Torrent is serving as a pretty good intro then I hop in and Blackstar them to smithereens.  Also, the build looks like this will be up roughly every 40 seconds by the end, so that's nice.  5-slot Armageddon.

Atomic:

Electron Shackles -- 3-slot Thunderstrike for the ranged d.  I also like the Gamma effect!

Negatron Slam -- currently 6-slotting with Blasters Wrath.

Positron Cell -- see Abyssal Gaze.

Ionize -- see Aim

Beta Decay -- I hear a lot about the PITA factor of having to constantly re-activate it when you get mezzed.  It's worth it.  Achilles Heel proc and 3 Enzymes eventually.

Metabolic Acceleration -- I also love this power.  If I can find more slots to spare I'll add more, but for now Power Transfer and Performance Shifter procs.

Atom Smasher -- Easily my favorite animation.  The damage is a little lackluster though, which saddens me.  5-slot Avalanche and 1 for the Absolute Amazement -to hit proc.

Radioactive Cloud -- I like it as an oh shit button, and also can serve as a prelude to Blackstar with a much faster animation.  2 slot Basilisks.

Positronic Fist -- Only have one slot in there at the moment, but anticipate 6-slotting Makos.  Jury is still out on how good this power is.

But aggroing enemy spawns across the map is half of the fun with Umbral Torrent! It can really speed up 'defeat all' SFs if you can draw enemies to the rest of the team. The latest page has me still getting used to the reality that Umbral Torrent has a longer range than (Fast) Moonbeam. (YMMV, but this was a dumb change)

I had Umbral Torrent 6-slotted with 5xRagnarok, but I switched up to a 4x%proc build (including the Overwhelming Force KB->KD) behind a Centriole (Dam/Range) and Nucleolus (Acc/Dam). I like the faster recharge time with the set slotting, but ultimately I found the slightly slower recharge to give me more time to leverage other tricks in my arsenal. Lysosome is not a bad choice since you will almost certainly be spamming that attack. Aside from the relatively low %proc chances (the reason for boosting range on the cone) IMO the drawback to the %proc slotting in Umbral Torrent is IIRC that there aren't a sufficient number of %damage procs that scale to lowest levels.

Ok, heading into the home stretch on this one.  She's about to ding 47, and until 50 all I'm going to get is marginally more protection.  Then at 50, with superiorizing ATOs and WOs and one set of purples, she'll get a lot more protection and recharge.

This will be my first blaster to 50 on HC, and overall the jury says two thumbs up.  I plan on playing her into her incarnates and see if that kicks up her performance into a higher gear.  Right now at 46 I'm soloing redside content at +2/x5 (bosses, but no AVs) and doing just fine, but I definitely die a lot more than I do on a melee alt.  To be honest, I'm a little disappointed in the damage output.  I guess I was expecting to be one-shotting bosses like mad, and maybe it's my build and maybe it's my lack of skillz but the damage feels kind of like I'm running a controller.

I'm definitely underwhelmed by the melee damage.  I love, LOVE Blackstar as a power, but I find that I spend most of my clean up time using point blank Gloom, Moonbeam, and Life Drain over Negatron Slam and Positronic Fist.  I certainly am happy using the two ranged holds as holds rather than proc bombs.  Umbral Torrent is the MVP of powers, with Blackstar a close second.  Atom Smasher is curiously disappointing, and I'm hoping that will change if I proc it out a little (torn between Fury of the Glad -res or Absolute Amazement -to hit).

So I saw this post and decided a dark/atomic blaster looks like a lot of fun so I started one.

I made my first build idea and would like some feedback. The biggest question I have it does it make sense to put a lot of damage procs into the build like I have seen others do? If so which powers to proc?

I also know I need to focus on a defense type and wonder if 35-40% defense would be enough given all the -accuracy powers in the dark set.

ok this caught my eye and now i am strongly tempted to build up a dark atomic blaster. I rebuilt what you had to modify the defense (at worst during barrier on cd in 5% overcap s/l and 7% undercap e/n vs your 1.5% undercap s/l 7% overcap e and 4% undercap n) and softcap your hitpoints while dramatically upping your dmg and single target holds.

You can probably change tactics for assault (or a travel power) and remove the kismet without issue since you have so much -def. Otherwise life drain is fairly optional as i wanted some form of healing and territary ranged nuke. Otherwise still need to decided where to swap slip defiant barrage in (perhaps negatron slam?) With this you have a nasty melee combo and can keep up pressure at ranged and have a few good aoes to rotate
