I have fallen in love with this game

Recommended Posts

Im new to city of heroes (not new to old mmorpgs tho, im an old school Everquest player who knows the pain of going down a level  becuz of a death that steals hours and hours of grinding xp in one moment)  but still something about this game has caught my eye in a intense way,

let me explain......

1. god this community may be the best bunch of people iv ever encountered i mean, dam its on another level

2 at first i thought the city backdrop threw me off (me being a strictly a medieval fantasy mmo player) but man iv fallen for it deep

3. the customization that you can on a heroes is bar non the best iv ever seen

4. so many awesome awesome classes and options for powers its crazy crazy

5. travel, somtimes i just run around at high speeds and jump around, its kinda  very relaxing in a nice smooth way

Welcome! I do like the old style EQ as well, pledged towards Pantheon now. This is totally different, the world does not take itself seriously... but it is consistent in that. This is just here to have fun and a power fantasy. While some players will probably tell you about the deep lore in CoH, it's just cheeky comic lore. For me this game is all about having lots of fun and experimenting with power combinations. And yes, the community has only very few toxic players in it. In all my years here i encountered just a hand full.

Welcome to our city.
As someone who's played this game a long time, I have a lot of advice. Most of it is aligned with what everyone else would advice.

But the one thing I would tell you that perhaps not everyone would is - take your time. Don't be in a rush to get to the "end game".
This game has a TON of small details in both game mechanics and lore that you'll miss if you rush through things.

Welcome!

I just love that somebody recently discovers a two decades old "obsolete" game and appreciates it for what it brings to the genre

What really amazes me is that more MMOs didn't look at CoH and say "we need to be more like this"

But I guess that's their loss.

I wish for the OP many countless pleasureable hours of playing one of the best PC games in human history.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

The best commentary about the community was something I remember from an ITF back on live, when we had a woman and her five-year-old son on the team. She said that CoH was the only online game she felt comfortable about letting her son play without supervision, because of the quality of the community. And when I tried playing other MMOs -- Aion, Tabula Rasa (both before NCsoft killed CoH), and SWTOR -- I was severely depressed by how rude, vindictive, and foul-mouthed the chat channels were. Yes, there were still courteous and helpful players, but they were far and away the minority. And I have to wonder if it's the setting itself that brings out the good behavior of the community. Well, that and the complete absence of adversarial loot, which inherently fosters jerk behavior.

Yep, only heard second hand about having to roll for drops in other MMO's and the arguments people would get into about "need vs. greed", etc. and was so happy none of that was ever a part of CoH.

everquest was my first and only mom experience before CoH, so i sed feel ya on the culture shock from playing in a more anachronistic setting 😛

if it suits You, there are 1000 slots to experiment in the low levels to late teens for fun power combinations and the rp community cooks up some very Fun games.

Wow, @Snarky that's great. Have you had a facelift or did a wizard cast a spell to make you look 40 times more attractive than you used to be?

You fell in love?

You fool!  You missed a prime opportunity to fall in a machine that makes plasma balls, or a vat of artificial cat food crunch enhancer, or a secret nuclear facility used for grafting fused quartz into the human genome, and gain superpowers!

Welcome to the City of Heroes! (and sometimes Villains) 🦸

I played EQ with a few friends for three months, the final nail in the coffin was when I was running to catch up with them on one of the transport boats. Just before it set sail they decided to hop off and I hopped on just as it transitioned, leaving me to sink or swim in an endless ocean. Since it was a zone you weren't supposed to be able to access nothing had a visible presence. This was before you could swim from island to island. I didn't want to lose my loot, as meager as it was at the time so after my endurance ran out I'd sink and before I drowned I'd regain enough End to dog paddle some more. This went on for 3 hours.

I'm a crappy slow typist so there were no long conversations with other players other than calling out to anyone that was on a boat and it's LOC to which I'd dog paddle, sink, drown, dog paddle towards. Eventually, to the surprise to those on board, I majikally appeared on deck. While I could not see the boat, it literally ran right over me. That was pretty much the end of my EQ days, gave all my shit away and logged out for the last time.

Dislike certain sounds? Silence/Modify specific sounds. Looking for modified whole powerset sfx?

Check out Michiyo's modder or Solerverse's thread.  Got a punny character? You should share it.

can a person even claim to have played EQ if they didn't end up swimming halfway across the sea due to a boat clipping error??

Definitely a right of passage. That and showing up to the Nexus and missing your portal by 2 seconds.

Welcome!  There's plenty of variety in enemy groups too, and not everything is super-grindy.  Hope you're having fun bopping through the City!

Since I never did play EQ, I'm just picturing the riverboat from Over the Garden Wall.  😄
