I was hoping for a Player Buff change. If enabled, it will be impossible to buff a player that's not on your team.

Geez, write a better DPS tool that can account for buffs maybe.

In the meantime, people gave you some options.

 

I think blanket turning off buffs from non-teams would cause some issues mainly with league stuff, but there are some other edge cases as well.  There's some other interactions that could be impacted as well.   Null's ability to turn off certain things seem to be power specific (effect specific since speed boost, you turn off the extra movement, but not the recovery), so even there is a bit more code needed.  (and is char specific, not team, etc...)

So while it might be simple to take a hammer to it, it may take more effort to do it right.

 

Not against the idea of some way, since there are a few people who would like this for RPG purposes.  Pretty sure I've seen it asked for in the past.

I can ask away in the game all day and it won't make a difference. First because I can't reach even a majority of players given my server presence and available times for play. Second because I am just a player like you and they have no more reason to listen to me than they do you even if I could reach all players.

 

Also, you keep emphasizing DPS tool, but not specifying what DPS tool. And while I don't use any myself, I do know of one and to the best of my knowledge, it can screen for what it checks. So if you are using a DPS tool made available to players for their use, maybe check with others to see if it can screen out the unwanted data. If you made the DPS tool, maybe add the ability to selectively check data.

 

And finally, no one on this thread has made fun of you. No one on this thread has attacked you. No one on this thread even put much effort into attacking your suggestion. The most negative response was the poster didn't understand the desire for the request, but would prefer it was possible through the options menu rather than being made available through Null the Gull. The joking was between two other posters and not directed at you. And you keep acting like it's you versus the world here. I don't need or want you to "be better and not resort to any more acknowledgements to the lack of intelligence in some folks". I'm not telling you anything on this forum for my sake. I was hoping to convince you to take a moment and see what others are saying rather than immediately jump to a defensive stance, and stop trying to make enemies of everyone. Is the DPS TOOLS data vitally important at the Atlas Park Levels? Back Alley Brawler is also available in Atlas Park of course.

The DPS TOOL is session based. If the timer is running regardless of being in mission or not, the data is collected from the combat log and stored for later observance. The tool places all information into categories buffs included which ultimately effects the entire session. So yes, some times I am not running a test and I don't worry about buffs. But having the option to disable ALL buffs would be a great addition to the game. As far as I know only 3 people currently use this tool for combat calculations. When I run a defender or any toon that can buff? I do not buff outside of teams. There is an outside chance that someone may be doing what I am doing (Crunching numbers etc) so I just don't, its more respectful this way. Lates.

Yep, my 7 year old comes up with the wildest and weirdest name and costume ideas I've ever seen; seeing what their little imaginations do with this game's CC is so fun.

 

As to the OP--while I do think that parsing a DPS tool while standing next to Miss Liberty is kind of a weird choice and seems like a self-inflicted issue you could easily avoid, I suppose there is no technical harm in having an option to decline outside buffs, providing it doesn't bork things with how leagues function.

Well, more options isn't a bad thing per se, but this seems like such a non problem. Level in your base between missions, and right click cancel before you start to fight will take care of the rest. Simply standing by Miss Liberty and being buffed should have zero effects on the DPS tool since you're not fighting at that moment.

Hostile attitude aside, I can understand the OP's desire for a tool to prevent incoming buffs, whether for testing power numbers or just because I want to limit unintended visual effects on a costume. I wouldn't mind seeing a toggle power sold through START that accomplishes this. Personally I'd love to have one for each, one toggle to prevent the numbers, another to prevent the graphics. I usually have no problem with random buffs, but more often might want to not be layered in bubbles visually 😛

Beyond that however, I agree with others that this is a public game where you coexist with other people and you need to be ok with that. Other people buffing strangers isn't an assault, and if that's a point you have a problem with, there's probably more enjoyable games out there.

Regardless, there is literally no reason for anyone to be against this option, unless it is just too hard to implement on the software side of things.

 

Players having the OPTION to turn something like this on and off would allow everyone to play the game the way they like.

 

If you want the buffs, keep the option off. If you do not want the buffs, for whatever reason you have, turn the option on.

What is the very first thing the game asks the player after character creation when you get to Atlas Park?

I mean, there are times I am decidedly anti-social and not looking to team and not really wanting drive-by buffs.

But mostly for those times, I'm either offline and it doesn't matter, or I'm doing story arcs, soloing in an instance, and it doesn't matter.

 

It would only really come up if I was (a) feeling anti-social, AND (b) doing a story arc / mission that requires me to spend considerable time street sweeping in a populated area.  ex, if a mission tells me to kill a bunch of clockwork or council in Boomtown, I'm really not concerned with drive-by buffs, because the place is deserted.  If the mission requires me to kill 50 carnies in Peregrine Island, OK, drive by buffs happen, but I grow thicker skin and don't worry about it. People mean well. I'll just deactivate the buffs a few seconds after they fly off.  It's not like the player who randomly buffed you is going to hang around and babysit you for an hour to refresh their buffs the whole time. Deactivate, and it's a non-issue.

 

Most of the time I don't mind the buffs at all, though.

In my case, the sudden buff surprises me and gives me the impression that the player buffing me thinks I can't manage on my own. I know that is not his/her/their intent, but oftentimes it feels that way. (That's also why if I see a PC struggling fighting on a zone map and heal them, the first thing I do after is send the player an apology to inform him/her/them that I was not trying to imply anything with the heal and hope (s)he/they has a good day.) However, if I am buffed randomly by a passing player, after the moment of shock passes, I just click the buff and then cancel it.

 

Edit: I should add that I don't think all drive-by buffs are bad. If I'm fighting on a zone map and the fight goes sideways because the game decides I shouldn't be allowed to hit except on Streakbreaker despite a 95% chance to hit and I shouldn't be allowed to avoid anything despite a 45% defense, and suddenly I find myself ablaze, iced over, bubbled, or buffed any other way; when the fight is over, I thank the person that gave the drive-by buff. Either by PM if I saw the character name or in broadcast as a to whom it may concern if I have no clue who helped me. Drive-by buffing me while I'm standing nowhere near anything though hits me up the head with a "what the hell" reaction. (Which is why if for some reason the devs decide to implement the OP, I won't be using it. Drive-by buffs are definitely appreciated when needed. Only when needed though.)
