I've played COH on Linux since 2004, never been glitchy for me, but maybe the dev side...

The discussion is MiDs.

I've seen your build in the wild, you don't need Mids, you need a hail mary and a few gin and tonic

(no but generally the way i handle mids is when they tell you to use the in-app updater, wait a week, then reinstall from the website. when they tell you to reinstall from the website, wait a week, then use the in-app updater)

As Luminara gave a detailed explanation about, and I will sum up my understanding...

They had a Working MiDs.  They made major changes.  ALL OF WHICH MADE IT WORSE.

Yes, they are volunteers.  Hooray?!?

Again, harsh tone, and assuming they did it for funsies or maliciously, but no point arguing. Carry on.

I doubt this is your issue, but you never know. Are you opening MIDs via clicking on one of your build files using Explorer each time? And if so does a dialog box appear, even just for a second? If it does, it's likely that somewhere in your registry it's still has a file association for MDB to an old version (and is installing, or trying to reinstall that version). Change the file association for MDB files to the latest version, or start MIDS via the exe each time.

Just mentioning it as someone else was doing the same thing and having the same issues.

I'll always be thankful of those that have worked on Mids, past and present. Ever since learning about it, the program has always been with me as my trusty sidekick. It really made the game that much more fun for me. 🥳

I hope the issues you are encountering are reolved sooner than later. I know I wouldn't be as invested in my characters without it.

@Snarky old boy, I know exactly why you are having so much trouble now with Mids. It's because you, as a crusty old Snaggletoothed Vampire, you have LONG nails!!! And every time you type on the keyboard or use your mousey mouse, they are either getting in the way or stabbing into them. After all, 3" or longer nails would get in the way for everyone most times. So cut your damn nails ol' boy! That will solve your problem... 😁

I occasionally get that update loop, whereas I agree on the update, which it then does. And then wants to update to the same version again.

And all the while it keeps heckling me that my build is of a older patch, even when I check on the 'Don't notify me on this anymore'.

And yeah, it sounds like I'm licking boots, but without Mids we would have no alternative.

... wouldn't we? Or would someone else say "We don't have this sort of thing" and make it, versus "Well, we have MIDS?"

Snarky's complaint is as valid as "oh these steps were easy and worked for me." Volunteer or not, if they're getting complaints like this, the folks maintaining MIDS should pay attention to them and remember *not everyone's computer savvy.* I have to provide support for folks and I get the whole range from "knows everything" to "Click the Windows button? I don't know what you're talking about, I'm not computer savvy" and walking through how to change a password is a 20 minute process.

Yes, ideally the fix for this is "have the installer do everything" so that it's a one - well, two - click solution for folks like Snarky (not saying that to put him down.) But if they need extra steps or some workaround, they've got to present it in the simplest, hand-holdiest terms possible. (Yes, they can say "If you're computer savvy, find this, unzip and run it, then run the update" as well for the folks who are, sure.)

Appreciating a program doesn't make it immune from criticism if there's an issue with it. And that Snarky's trying to run it and continually having problems (instead of just saying "F it") should, frankly, be seen as appreciation as much as "oh it's wonderful I wouldn't run the game without it." If he didn't appreciate it or its functionality... he wouldn't be trying to install it and update it *even after having repeated problems with it.*

But his problem is... I don't want to say rare, or unique, but at least not *common*. Sure, some people are complaining and their discord has some people chime in saying they haven't managed to install or re-install which they or the community there helps troubleshoot. But the vast majority is saying nothing because nothing is wrong. Like many in this thread my Mids is giving me no problems. I had a brief moment where it would open a window for a second and then close again but deletion and re-installing fixed it without even having to check their discord.

And while I agree with how it should not make them immune to criticism what I really chided on was the tone of it. A free something handed out built on sweat and tears (because I've read the dev's comments and it's not easy to keep the program going) being sneered at because it doesn't work perfectly? C'mon.

I already admire them by still being puttering over it for so many years. In the meanwhile I've played the game, got bored, dropped out, played other games, returned after months, played some more, got bored, left, went to do other things, returned. And the Mid's devs aren't even taking those breaks. They just keep on puttering at it and keeping things running, and we still have a working Mids with some niggles and problems but mostly correct, and when not they correct the bugs we present to them.

User has problem.

Options?

  1. Do nothing and wait till issue self resolves.
  2. Seek guidance directly from developers who are openly accessible.
  3. Go to a platform where the developers aren't present and insult them.
