The powerset you'd love, but you know will never be implemented
UltraAlt replied to SteelR4t's topic in General Discussion
City of Heroes started with Tanks, Scrappers, Blasters, Controllers, and Defenders. I know that some try to lump those into the Tank, healer, and DPS categories, but that is them impressing their views on the system to make it relatable. Of course, many games are going to "tread the ground most travelled" because that is the easy path to take. Some people expect the "holy trinity of gaming" so at is where their brain set is, so to make a game easily accessible you use what player are used to finding in a game. Adding other elements can be the tricky part for game balance. Rock, paper, scissors is always going to be a standard. The tank distracts and soaks damage to protect the healer and the DPS. The DPS defeats things because the tank and defender don't have enough damage to do so. The healer heals both the tank and the DPS so they can do their jobs. That isn't set to occur in City of Heroes. Some players do impose that upon the game. These days, there seem to be a larger number of players playing solo. There is no "holy trinity of gaming" when soloing, but I will yield to the fact that some are multi-boxing when they are "soloing". -

I can I get a power customization of that for nunchaku? A pair would be great, but I could settle for one-handed. -
PSA if you store items in the auction house

I'm sorry I didn't know you owned this thread. No reason to keep it open to spread your word if that is your stance. The thread will be gone quickly. No one will even know it was here. -
PSA if you store items in the auction house
UltraAlt replied to AboveTheChemist's topic in The Market
What it means is that the bug is insignificant to a majority of the community. I don't think it is worth the time of the DEVs to track down something that happens so rarely. They aren't paid. I would rather them work on thing that they enjoy doing. It's fine if you want to warn people, but I think it also find to tell them that it is highly unlikely that it will happen to them and they don't need to worry about it. I don't know if it was you or one of the others that said that this same thing happened with items that you no longer had in storage? -
My speculation is two fold. One is funneling. With F2P and only one starting zone for Villains and Praetoria, the DEVs seems to want to funnel all the new F2P heroes through Atlas (of course on some servers they just went immediately to the AE to power level and then struggle to figure out how to leave Altas Park). Game size. Back then storage and bandwidth isn't like it is now and the size of a game made a difference. With both City of Villains and Going Rogue being released (and even before then) the were making subtle cuts in existing content here and there. Even downloading updates was very time consuming. Honestly, I probably leveled up 25-30% of my characters in Galaxy. The fighting around the lake in Galaxy is a lot more fun (dangerous) than Atlas. If you get the O-portal from the get-go, you can still go to Shadow Galaxy and level by hunting the lake. Without the contacts, that's all it really is at this point unless you want the explore badges or the nostalgia of looking around the zone. I had a lot of fun times there. if I recall correctly, at least some of the time Tanker Tuesday would assemble in Galaxy City. Was it an emotional impact? I don't really think so so much. It did give them the ability to make the new tutorial that allowed you to pick if you were a hero or villain on the way out versus picking by tutorial or direct zoning to one side or the other. When the F2P AE Babies invades, they all went to Atlas and that made Galaxy look like a ghost town by comparison. If you are going to nix out a zone, it's going to be an old low level one that isn't be used before a newer zone that the DEVs are trying to hype. There is a tutorial about what is going on in Galaxy City now. When enough players are in a zone, a 2nd instance forms. I remember when there were 3 or 4 Atlases up at on one server or another. oh, but it is the only place for Supa Troll Raves https://homecoming.wiki/wiki/Troll_Rave + Babbage shows up there! honestly, it was the first vertical zone. Something that the DEVs strove for with/in CoV.

Difficulty of adding new models, costume parts, and textures.
UltraAlt replied to Rigged's topic in General Discussion
I used to do a good bit of costume and skin texture mod'ing in another game I played, but it was easy enough to do with with .pdfs. I know that there was a CoH proprietary graphics type and that means that there is limited ability to mod those files, but I have run into groups that have done it, so the programs have to be out there. I'm not sure what the harm is of letting someone know what programs can be used to alter the costumes even if the devs don't want us to self-load costume parts in the game. We could submit them to through support and let the DEVs judge what is allowable or not. I've even done some animating so knowing what animation programs are used for the game might be helpful as well. I know that they may not be a advanced as the animation tools that I used for the game that I mod'ed, but it would be cool to check it out anyway. -
PSA if you store items in the auction house
UltraAlt replied to AboveTheChemist's topic in The Market
I looked at what you posted. I guess you haven't read all the the posts on the threads that you have posed on. I have some items in storage in the AH. The only time they I accidently posted any of those items was due to user error. I was tired and/or clicking too fast. I have never had an item post that I didn't have in storage or I hadn't clicked on. I admit it that I have put things for sale at a price I didn't mean to, or even purchased things at the wrong price, but I have never seen what you are indicating goes on. It seems to be a narrow group of people and may be lag related. You haven't indicated one way or another if you are using a mod to change your cursor shape or size. If you have, then that could have caused some of the issues. Say the cursors click zone is large enough to fall over multiple post buttons at the same time. No telling what kind of havoc that could cause in the auction house. If you are paranoid about it, go for it. This is something that is occuring few and far between. I don't see a large rush of "me too". -
The AH bugs out and charges me fees that I never agreed to
UltraAlt replied to tanglin's topic in Help & Support
well, have fun. That's why most of us play games. If Homecoming isn't fun for you, find a game that is. I quit subscribing and playing City of Heroes almost exactly a year before it shut down because the changes to the game weren't fun for me any more. You have drawn the line, so don't sit on the fence. Find something that's fun for you to do. -

I don't know what game that you will be playing then. I don't think I have ever played a computer game that didn't have bugs in it. -
PSA if you store items in the auction house
UltraAlt replied to AboveTheChemist's topic in The Market
If I'm understanding correctly, you may have been using a game mod that wasn't developed by the Homecoming team that changed your cursor size that has been known to cause such an issue. I consider installing a mod, using it, and getting an error to be caused by the user and, therefore, user error. I don't know for sure if you were using a mod to increase your pointer size or not, but, based on what other people have said, that could cause the issue you are indicating. That is to say, you are clicking where you don't think you are clicking and/or clicking multiple things at the same time due to the cursor size. -

PSA if you store items in the auction house
UltraAlt replied to AboveTheChemist's topic in The Market
There is no chance of this happening. Things will only get posted if you click on them to post them. Be careful when you putting things up for sale if you are using the /ah for storage - which I don't recommend. -

UltraAlt replied to tanglin's topic in Help & Support
I do a huge about of AE trading. I have never seen what you say has occurred happen. I have accidentally posted something for the wrong price. Far too many times than I would like to to admit to. I can promise you that it was user error. We all make mistakes. Try to be more cautious next time. It's easy to misclick when you are tired or rushing. -
Difficulty of adding new models, costume parts, and textures.
UltraAlt replied to Rigged's topic in General Discussion
I can see upgrading textures on costumes, but the faces are pretty much only going to take much scrutiny in close up RP. That is to say, a majority of the player base will be zipping around a majority of the time not looking at other players or their own face. Knowing what programs can be used to adapt and create costume parts (and faces) could be very useful to the community. -
So imagine our Devs decided to go for CoH 2...
UltraAlt replied to Scarlet Shocker's topic in General Discussion
It would fall flat on its face unless people could port over their all their characters, and there was a promise that there would be no microtransactions. -
I would have to say Striga and Steel Canyon. But I also like the Kings Row, the Hollows, and Croatoa. Shadow Shard and Independence port (mainly because of travel issues). I really like the volcano on Striga and that that there is a Giant ROBOT inside of it. I like a mix of terrain type in a zone, but I'm also fine with the more inner city like zones of King Row, Skyway, and Bricks. The concept of "alternate time period" zones like Cimerora is interesting to me. I would have liked to have seen/to see other "alternate time period" zones. Wild west would be cool, middle ages with castes and such, ... and that missing zone that it looked like they would be adding for an techno eastern city (but maybe that was what was used for Going Rouge instead?) Yes. A fog bank moving through the city would probably be the easiest to pull off. There are already fog critters and they could just move in a pack across the city the same way that the ghost ship does. I would also only spawn that at night like the ghost ship. All the zones have day/night cycles as far as I know (other than the Shadow Shard). I don't know about the snow or rain. Both would be cool to see, but I think this would be a lot of work to implement. the fog is all ground level. The rain and snow would both require clouds - that don't necessarily have to be at the zone ceiling, but I wouldn't think too much farther down than that. (partially because flying up through a cloud bank into the area above it would be kind of cool. I would start with the western (wild west) and middle ages/fantasy w/castles zone. Though thinking about it, a Steampunk zone would be cool as well. I know that there was a real push for a space station with outer space, but I'm not sure how well that works in with the rest of the game. Well, the western one would have a city with a saloon, of course, a sheriff's office, doc's place, hotels and some shops. Outside of that main area would be some hilly desert areas, some farm lands with related forest. with some ranch houses out in the areas outside of town. Maybe a river. some railroad tracks (with maybe a train that moves through the like the monorail). Roving groups of bandits. interactive wildlife (bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, cows, sheep, buffalo). non-interactive wildlife (fish in the river, birds flying in formation or circling). A native settlement. Possibly leaning a bit into the steampunk angle in some "neighborhoods". This would be alternate time stream/period like Cimerora. So dealing with some hinge/pivot point in history with some group traveling back in time to try to disrupt the the time period/alter the timeline. So this could lean more for natural but would have some the tech and science thrown in some "neighborhoods" The Middle Ages/fantasy one with castles would probably easier to make. Castles, of course, both on flat and more mountainous terrain. maybe a lake and a river. plenty of forests, some farm lands. Maybe section of underground caverns that are actual part of the zone and not an instance. Wandering bands of bandits. interactive wildlife (bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, cows, sheep, dragons). non-interactive wildlife (fish in the river, birds flying in formation or circling, dragons circling over head.) different levels of tree heights like stacked Perez forest areas with more than one tier with some forest mazes on multiple levels. Of course, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, and whatnot (like the other kind of trolls). This would be alternate time stream/period like Cimerora as well. So dealing with some hinge/pivot point in history with some group traveling back in time to try to disrupt the the time period/alter the timeline. This would be more natural dealing with magic and mutation.

Luckly, I avoid most of that, but I have been known to speed boost other characters.

Most underrated power sets in game
UltraAlt replied to Scarlet Shocker's topic in General Discussion
I agree. I don't like that the Provoke is the only "pull" in the set now. I like a single target versus a multi-target on any characters but a tank and tanks already have taunt. I like a pacify but I don't use it as much as I should/could. When I take the pool, I usually get both fears. I have only taken the self-rez on one character so far. -
👍 The Repeat Offenders sort of had a way around that. They had multiple themed supergroups that ran at a set night of the week for a set time period. If there was a time that you wanted to run every night, you might be able to find people that play during that time period that would team-up with you in a recurring basis. I'm guilty for some DFB and Yin and other task forces. I don't PI radio or AE Farm. I am somewhat hesitant about recruiting for mission teams as sometimes they turn into hunts. But you are correct there, the "handful of people regularly putting team together" tend to be the same people doing it because other people aren't stepping up to lead. I lead DFBs for 3 reasons : 1) I like playing at level 8+ better than I do getting to level 8. 2) a good number of low level characters are standing around looking for something to do and/or asking for DFBs but don't want to lead 3) I'm against farming, so I can help provide content that players can team on at a low level and participate in, then I'm getting them to a level that they might learn to enjoy leveling with their character at that point as they have some powers to work with + hopefully getting them open to teaming in general. Your example of Yin previously is really no more rewarding at that level than Posi 1 or Pos 2. However, I do think that they take about the correct length of time for a task force and that is part of my consideration. All three take about 30-45 minutes to run. I'm not doing speed runs. If I know something is speed run, I don't join. I'll even quit some if I found out that I'm on a speed run, and it wasn't announced as being one. I'm not concerned about the merits. I like having fun with a PuG because the variables are always changing. Nope. I enjoy a PuG and, if other people enjoy a DFB, then I have no problem helping provide a fun experience for a group of players. I tend to run/lead the DFBs with sub-20 level characters. Sometimes I'll take a higher level bubbler in to help the team survive the vazh boss badge part. Sometimes if I'm playing a character that is a higher level, I'll switch down to a lower level character that I haven't played for a while to help fill a DFB tha someone is recruiting for. When I get to 8, I try to get a Posi 1 going or join one, content that fits my character conception, or helping out on a DFB if someone has the call out. By the time I get done with a Posi 2, I'm trying to get a Posi 2 going or join one, content that fits my character conception, or helping out on a DFB if someone has the call out. By the time I get to 20, I'm looking to lead a Yin or join one, content that fits my character conception, or helping out on a DFB if someone has the call out. after that, it's a mix and match of what is out there because I'm constantly switching alts/servers and making new characters. In the end, I really don't care to much if my level is capped. As for the 50's that run lower level content, I personally would rather not have most of them on teams or to run with them. I've run into too many 50's with behavior that I just don't find enjoyable to deal with for one reason or another. Okay, so I log in with character A for whatever reason. I get to the point that I'm looking for a team and nothing has popped up in /lfg I look through the characters online on the server. I see there are enough people that will probably run a DFB. I switch up to one of my lowest level characters on the server and recruit for it. Next check out the 8+ range for Pos 1. Then for Posi 2. Then for Yin. Most of the time there isn't enough characters free from level 30-40 to try to form anything at those levels. That is to say, they appear to be already on a team. That team may or may not recruit. If none of that pans out, I figure out missions to run (I have some sol projects) or alt-jump to log characters on the server before switching up servers. I have a couple of 50's parked. I don't intend to level any other characters past 49 at this point. I'll turn off the xp on any character that gets to that level (except maybe for one, because I want to slot a contagious confusion proc)

yeah. Both of these could be simply power customizations -
I can only speak from my own feelings and what I have observed. The game is City of Heroes. City of Villains was added to City of Heroes. Even though it was technically listed as a separate game originally, you couldn't have a base in City of Heroes unless you bought and installed City of Villains along with it. Also City of Villains gave you additional character slots for CoH. CoV was a way to try to get more money out of the players. Was it to explore villainy? Yeah, sort of, but they knew they had to give something to the heroes to get them to buy it and maybe play it. CoH hadn't been released 20 years ago, let alone CoV, but I guess that's just a fudge on the timing. It is true that you couldn't play the villain archetypes as heroes until 5 years after City of Villains was released when City of Heroes: Going Rogue was released and the alignment system was added to the City of Heroes. By that point, City of Villains had been merged into City of Heroes and City of Heroes: Good and Evil edition had been released and everyone that had City of Heroes or City of Villains that did not have the other were grandfathered in to the other game. From my point of view, the merger of the two games and the alignment system were added because there were alway far, far fewer villain characters than there were hero characters. Even back then, people that were playing villain characters were complaining about having no one to team with. I played CoV for a while because I bought it. I randomly played villains at other times because was in the RO (Repeat Offenders Global supergroup that had multiple supergroups - maybe even across multiple servers... I can't remember that much for sure at this point) or a friend wanted to run villains for the night. I think I had one villian make it to level 50 before I stopped subscribing almost exactly a year before the sunset. Honestly, I never really enjoyed City of Villains for multiple reasons, but I didn't dislike it as much as Going Rogue/Praetorian content. I purchased City of Heroes in order to play superheroes. If I was designing one, I would start having morality tracking from the get go. Do what you want, but other people and other "groups" in the game will react to you based on your behavior. Even if you start as a hero, if you behave in a villainous manner, you become known "in the City" as a villain. It depends upon the game environment, and the way that Homecoming is now, you can go change your alignment as soon as your character zones into the game for the first time if you want to. But your point was taken by Going Rogue. You don't choose your alignment until you get to level 14 or something, so that option is there if you want it. Go Rogue. nothing like that from my standpoint.

Yes. If you mean that the DEVs should double the XP (boosted or not) for simply playing villain content, then I agree with that statement. If you meant that you didn't word it so it meant that, so again, I agree. There is no reason that the DEVs should reward villains simply for playing villain content. I haven't checked recently, but Planetside 2 still does this as far as I know. You get a percentage increase of XP based on the percentage imbalance to the other sides. it isn't a cut-and-dry double xp boost if your faction has less than 33% of the population on that continent. Also, there is no need for faction-balance in City of Heroes. It isn't Heroes vs Villains vs Praetorians PVP where you want a relatively equal number of players battling against each other. If you want to go for some kind of PVP reward bonus in PVP zones for actively fighting in a PVP zone, I wouldn't support that either because multiboxing is allowed. There is no reason for force players to play one side or the other. The incentive used to be the archetypes that you had access to, but we know that many players simply got around that once the alignment system was introduced by making a villain and then moving them along the alignment spectrum to some degree or another to be able to have a character with a villain archetype on the hero side. I think Homecoming was correct in simply opening up all the archetypes to all characters during character creation. Being a villian is "good" makes no sense. It is one of the arguments that villains players have been using since before the Sunset. If being a villain is so "good", then it wouldn't be villainy would it? "a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot." - google it. Villains are by definition "evil" Calling it the "red" side - instead of what it is (villain) - is intentional obfuscation of that fact, imo.
