Building a Melee Fender

I know it's a bit of a meme but I have been wanting to make a Melee Defender/Corrupter build for a while, and I am not sure what powers in the very short list of those that will work with such a build to start work with. On top of that I would like some advise on how to build/play this kind of character. To be transparent, I already have a Rad/Sonic Defender (My main actually) and I did try making a Meleefender before as a Kin/Sonic which didn't work out. I am also going to want the character to be more than Just a build I wam going to want to build them into a Character so the more the powers "Fit" together the better.

 

Help me Forums your my only hope!

Play in melee I am fine having ranged attacks, in fact I prefer to have them just in case. My favorite melee sets or Kinetic Melee and Spines after all.

I suggest my Kintank build on the corruptor forums then. I am constantly in melee destroying mobs.

I am looking into it, but I would prefer a build that actually uses melee attacks. I am fine with having ranged attack powers but I'd PREFER if they where not my primary means of attack.

Ok, how about a rad/kin Corr then, it has pbaoes (those count right? They are really big melee AOEs...yeah...) and then you'll take energy transfer from the epic pools in order to have a good melee attack, and then I guess we go with boxing, kick, and cross punch for the rest. It's tight, but a build that caps melee/ranged def can be done and you'll have good s/l resists. You'll still do decent damage and you'll not have to worry as much about recharge due to FS and siphon speed respectively.

That sounds pretty good.

I think your best bet for melee is to go for PBAoEs, I think your best bet for primaries would be Kinetics and for secondary it would be Rad. You get two PBAoEs ,and the first you get at level 4 and is your spammable bread and butter. My second choices for primary would be Traps for Mortar, the mines are there but wont be as useful on fast-moving teams, and Cold, as heatloss will bring you into melee every so often. My secondary choices for blasts would be either Fire or Psychic Blast. Fire because its just a solid set and has a cone and Inferno, Psychic for similar reasons.

Consider taking a look at Kin/Rad or Traps/Rad

Radiation Blast sort of forces this. It's not, strictly speaking, a top performing set. But to do your AoE damage, you will need to get right in the middle of things.

 

I suggest a build like Time/Radiation/Soul. Time is probably the safest PBAoE Buff set because it has a -ToHit aura with 25ft range (bigger than the hold auras in Rad or Nature), has a good +Defense buff in Farsight, and a heal. In fact, it's the only buff set that has both +Defense and a reliable heal.

 

Time/Dual Pistols can also be played at close range and is probably stronger than Radiation Blast due to better proc options. 

 

FWIW I do think -Defense is a somewhat underrated secondary effect. Since most teams these days consist of 2 or 3 50s carrying underleveled sidekicks, any source of +Accuracy or -Defense likely has a very high impact on overall team performance because otherwise teammates constantly miss.

Hmm... I do have neat name for a time Toon, though last time I tried it I found it a bit dull (on Mastermind) this would be a melee toon howver so odds are it will be a bit more exciting. I do know Duel Pistols will probably be a HARD pass for me, it may or may not have good DPS, but it just FEELS like your firing wet macaroni, and that's on a blaster!

I would go Time/Rad/Force or Rad/Time/Force. (Both are the same, former is a defender, latter is a corruptor) Time gets a PBAoE debuff which is perfect for a melee Oriented build, Time is incredibly tanky to boot. So you should have no issues surviving. Rad has 2 stellar PBAoEs and after those two picks it’s up to personal preference. Force gives you Total Focus, which will be your bread and butter melee attack, stuns, which would pair very well with Cosmic Burst. It also gives you Power Build Up which will boost all of your secondary effects, but more importantly, will boost Farsight to insane levels.

On a side note, all of my Defenders/Corrs play in melee range. I’ve just always been super aggressive and typically take Soul Master for Soul Drain, so once I Soul Drain I kind of plant my feet 😛 maybe not the safest, but very fun!

Time/ is awesome for Tankiness. Bubbles and Rings would do also cuz there is no mez worries.

 

For offense, there are lots of choices. /elec, /dp, /rad, even /h2o all can have the feeling of melee with good aggressive play.

 

 

I've been toying with the idea of a poison/h2o that I would play very aggressively and spend most of his life either in melee or short range.

 

Make a theme and have some fun is what I say.

If rolling Time, I'd favor Defender over Corruptor. Defender base Defense values are too good to pass up and leave more spots for damage procs.

 

Here's a quickly put together Time/Rad/Soul build. I didn't fully vet it for perfection. I aimed for procs wherever they'd go. Global recharge has Chrono Shift 8 seconds from perma.

I've tanked quite a bit with my proc'd out Time/DP/Soul defender. DP takes the Force Feedback +Rch proc in all its AoE powers and it fires for me often. It helps get Chronoshift to Perma. Power boosted Farsight is a cheat code as it makes your teams unhittable while allowing them to hit anything. I use macros on my location AoE powers (bullet rain, distortion field) to treat them as target AoEs (but you could make them PBAoEs). Often I'll jump in with my Slowed Response, then pop off Soul Drain, Hail of Bullets, rain of bullets, and distortion field. With my Times Juncture and Distortion field, everything stays close, basically stuck, in my AoE of terror.

I'll be another one to echo: If you're going for a melee Defender, go with Time. Kinetics will help with DAMAGE (outgoing damage, heal incoming damage, debuff enemy damage), but it won't help with mezzing or debuffing. You'll have to make definite design concessions to handle the mezzing and debuffing. With Time, you will still have to worry about them, but with slower incoming attacks and most of them missing, you won't get mezzed nearly as much. You can't meleefend when you're meleedazed instead.

 

Electric is another PBAoE option other than Rad and DP, allowing you to stack Holds with Time's Hold... with two Holds, you don't need to slot them up much as Hold, so you're free to put 4-5 damage procs in them.

There's always Kick / Boxing / Crosspunch too.  If you take all three, they DO boost up quite nicely.  And if you were already planning to get Weave, you're already dipping into that pool some.  And, Kick becomes a VERY reliable Knockdown vehicle (40% chance), which is mitigation along with damage.

 

If I was gonna do it I'd say Kin/Sonic, but it depends how much you plan to do this as a solo feat vs if you'll be teaming a lot. 

Dark/, Rad/, and Time/, are all very solid choices too.

Ok, so I only took melee attacks and pbaoes if I could help it. In that vein, Greater Fire Sword is the best epic melee power because its recharge is still decent and its dpa is pretty good. So you can run boxing->kick->GFS as your ST attack chain. You could go the total focus route, but the recharge is too high to be a part of a good chain. Anyway, this will work for you I think as a melee attacking corruptor, but it is by no means min/maxed as your strongest attacks as a def/corr are ranged. At the damage cap, your boxing and kick are doing 300+ damage and your GFS is doing 600+, I'm hoping this is enough to make you still feel effective. You also have maxed s/l resist, softcapped melee and ranged def, and perma hasten with two siphon speeds. I wouldn't run repel without Ageless.

So I have a request. I was looking to do something similar, except my dream is to stand next to tank and laugh mercifully as the mobs forever sit on there butts. Would it be feasible to go Time/ENG and slot KB to KD in all AOE's and in ALL power slot FF+ recharge? I think I can get my recharge low enough to spam AOE's and KD and never see my END again lol. So I figure procs in ST (and FF+) and in AOE's Proc and KB to KD(and FF+). 

 

Any idea's how this would be built, and what epic to take for another fast AOE KD or would SOUL be better for another ATT and boost?

 

I am pretty certain this is a lost cause lol, but I am leveling it and its fun, but no sure how to ever go about maximizing it.

If you're looking to leverage the FF + Rch proc without having to pay a KB tax by slotting KB->KD IOs, you could play as Dual Pistols and switch to an ammo that does do KB. The procs still work

It was more of the keeping enemies planted on there butts for fun play style. I have a DP FF+recharge..I took it from you 😄 lol. Just trying toi figure out how to go about making a perma KDtype toon that sets next to tank or heck, can Tank himself if need be.

I don't know..... maybe? It's not going to be perma, but it will be a lot. It'd probably be easier to go with an Force Fielder.
