Hello, mainly for my future info question.

At start of winter event I visited the new winter island area and then logged out.

I just remembered and have now moved to a regular zone.

I wonder what happens if I had not remembered and left alt in the event zone when the event ends?

Does the alt get trapped there till it reopens next year?

Does it get moved to a random zone?

Have been trying to remember what happened to alts left in the ski chalet area back on live when it got closed up?

I am also assuming that any instanced area like the Lord of Winter zone is treated like a mission so if I did the fight and then logged out still in the fight zone I would be logged in near the entrance  (where ever that is in this case!) next time time I used that alt?

Thanks

I think if the zone's unavailable and you log in, either (a) you're still there, the zone's inactive and you have to move or (b) you get moved to the starter zone (Atlas or Mercy.) Not sure where the winter zones fall on that. If the zone's available again and you haven't logged in all year on that character? (possible with a winter themed one, for instance,) it'd still be a legit zone so you should just ... be there.

The servers don't go and scan each and every character and move them if they're offline, though. I seem to recall, after the RWZ was created, I still had a character in the Rikti Crash Site (the old, no-raid no-mission zone) for a while, since the map itself wasn't removed - the zone was just inactive. I don't recall what happened with Galaxy - I think they moved them, but I can't say with 100% certainty.

Having an alt character on Legacy/Retail who logged out in Paragon Dance Party back when -that- zone was eventually "removed," I discovered that the map was still in the game even years later.  While the doors in the public zones no longer pointed to the Dance Party map, at least the Steel Canyon door inside the Dance Party still worked.

I don't know what would happen if a map is entirely removed from the game, a character parked there might before corrupted, but I think a petition to a GM could forcibly move said character to another Zone for you.  But that shouldn't be a problem here; even after the Winter Event is over, the seasonal zone still exists in the game.  You'd just talk to Null the Gull to get there all year around.

The winter forest hasn't actually gone anywhere. You can still access it if you know the secret way in (the bird is no longer the word in this case). Inside, the base portal and TUNNEL entrance are still there, so it's easy to leave.

I don't actually know what would happens should the zone be removed - I'm sure this happened with Galaxy City. I kind of remember characters in the ski chalet just getting booted to the main area of Pocket D.

I know earlier-on because zones were replaced/superseded rather than actually recreated (which is why we have the Echo zones now) characters who happened to log out in them would be able to stay there until they left; IE: If you had a toon logged out the Rikti Crash Site when Issue 10 landed, you'd still have a character inside the RCS (which was a neat pointless thing lol) they just had nothing to do and if they left could never get back in. 😄

I want to say much later they weren't so passive about things like that and when Galaxy City was destroyed if you were logged out there they moved you to Atlas Park; But that's mostly anecdotal recollections on my part. 🤔

Galaxy City definitely kicked you to Atlas after a few seconds. I remember this distinctly because it took them a few patches to realize the arcane Galaxy beacon still pointed to Old Galaxy and not Echo: Galaxy, so until they fixed it my way of SG transporting to Atlas was to go to Galaxy and get kicked over.

Back on live if you stayed in the winter zone and logged there then came back after it closed I want to say you emerged at the door in Pocket D.  Same as if you logged out in a mission.  You emerge at the door.  Dim memory though.  Like so many others.

What @Lines said. The zone is still available, even if they remove it from the Tunnel Network. I'm surprised so few have asked to be "sent elsewhere."

Okay, fine. I'll say it.  (I'll hide it for folks who like surprises.)

Spoiler

The Winter Island map is accessible from the Ski Chalet in Pocket D.  Head to the 2nd Floor below the fire pit, and instead of taking the Catwalks away from the Chalet, keep looking at the bottom.  You'll find a ramp leading to a cave door.  That's the entrance.
