Hi guys, when you report a thread could you put a description of why you think it needed reporting? Sometimes it's obvious like spambots, other times I'm looking thinking "Why is this reported?". If you think it's in the wrong section, or it's off topic, or you find it outrageous and need smelling salts (or poppers, I'm not judging!!) a quick description would help us immensely. Even one word is better than nothing 🙂

Thanks everyone. This message is brought to you by the letter C and is sponsored by Why_are_you_reporting_this.com

P.S. we do appreciate all the reports people put in 🙂

Referencing Sesame Street at the start and the internet at the end.  This is such a Gen X statement.  😁

(I realize by your own admission elsewhere that you're very slightly older than the commonly held start date for Gen-X, but close enough.)

Back when the term Gen X was all the rage on Madison Ave anyone in the 18-39 age group was considered Gen X, for like 20 some odd years

I've seen your wardrobe. I think most of your threads need reporting! 🤣

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

Look up Generation Jones.    I kinda got both.    My mom was born 1928, my grandfather 1881,  and then was mostly a latch key kid like a lot of gen x.   Most of my friend's parents were a decade or so younger than my mom.

All my generation were latch key kids. I see kids these days and wonder how they survive. 18 and 19 year olds (and I know it's a gross over generalisation) don't seem to be nearly as competent or independent as we were at that age. They also seem to have the survival instincts of a lemming. I've lost count of the number of kids looking at their phones with headphones in who've stepped in front of my car as I'm driving without even looking up. I'm nearly having a heart attack from coming inches away from running them over and they are more offended by the fact I dared interrupt their TikTok 😛

I think it depends on some community, etc... stuff.   I remember in college taking someone to the grocery store for the first time.

I didn't become a parent because I don't think I had the temperament, but I would have probably over corrected from my feral upbringing.

Its always interesting to see older gen talk about younger and vice versa. Im I believe on the tail end of Gen Z(born in ‘97, so I think that was the cutoff year?)

And honestly I have complaints about both. A lot of older generations are surprisingly, or I guess I should really be saying if I were pessimistic unsurprisingly, impatient and incompetent. To the point that most of their whining stems from a projection of their own ineptitude in the matter. I.e blaming phones because no one wants to listen to yet another unfounded and unhinged rant from grandpa about X or Y political topic they didn’t research and are simply parroting from Z news network.

Or in regard to being impatient, I have seen quite a few old heads being very “now now now!” Out in the world, way moreso than younger kids which is concerning. The rudest and most impatient irritating little shits have been old people(boomers and some early Gen X’ers). Yes, we get it, you’re on limited time but being a whiney ass annoying shit won’t make the car in front of you go faster or get you your food quicker. Neither will being rude.

And the opposite, a lot of my generation has this weird ass thing for trauma bragging and kink sharing which makes dating abysmal. No, Susie, I do NOT want to hear about what happened to you at 9 on our first date nor do I want to know your 69 fetishes. Im trying to eat my goddamn steak 🙃

Just my not exactly old person but not super green young rant as a borderline Gen Z adult

97!  You're a baby!  😄   I kid.

I find most generational stuff fairly fascinating.  Each generation has their waypoints and survivor bias and it can be wildly different between individuals.

So mass media is defining a generation as 11 years now, in an era when sex is legally prohibited until 18, at which time a person born to a previous generation could be expected to reproduce?

I have to say, I'm surprised that the guy who thought that up didn't consider that it might not be the best idea to flag 11 years old as "breeding age".

Get busy living... or get busy dying.  That's goddamn right.

Hmm, been awhile since I looked, but I just remember it being one of those edge cases.

I don't think generation labels are that helpful anyway since it's not really set, plus tends to relate to regions as well.

It's like anything, there is a lot of generalisation about different generations. Music was better in my day, when I was a kid we walked to school, Kids these days with their mobile phones and fancy gadgets. I stopped walking as soon as I was able to buy a car. I like Beyonce and Taylor Swift and Arianna Grande as much as I love Dusty Springfield and the Seekers and Steeleye Span. And my house is full of gadgets. Alexa answers from 3 different rooms sometimes. I don't miss ice cold houses with no central heating, being sacked from my job because they found out I was gay, having to eat toast and noodles because I couldn't afford anything else. Kids these days have it a lot easier than we did, and I'm glad. It means I have it easier too. I just wish they would chill and enjoy their youth. I see a generation of beautiful people obsessed with their looks, not realising they are actually perfect. I understand, I was as bad. I look at old photos of me and realise "hey!! I wasn't as bad looking as I remember".

My college tuition was twice as expensive as the last generation's college tuition. And it means less in the degree saturated job market.

And I had to grow up with school shootings.

My house is twice, nearly three times as expensive as the last generation's house.

My food, gas, utilities, insurance, car payment, medical bills, entertainment of any kind - are all twice as expensive as the last generation's.

Of course that wouldn't be a problem if my wage kept up with things.

So I have to work twice as hard, have two jobs, and less free time in order to have the same things as the previous generation.

Oh, and I won't be able to access any social safety nets when I retire because it will be insolvent or pension because no employer offers that incentive anymore.

This is why I play a make believe super hero game 🤪

Edit: And traveling to Europe is way more expensive!!

That's funny.  My experience has been the opposite.  As someone who was born in the 1970s, I've found that younger millennials and Zoomers tend to be more impatient and want everything "now now now," compared to Generation X.  I also found that they are a lot like Boomers in wanting to openly discuss politics.

Just goes to show that very few experiences are universal, I suppose.
