Okay, I love doing name design.  So just to clarify for my tired, aging brain:  what are we shooting for here?  Just creating a bunch of synonyms that folks can mix 'n match, or building lists of names to toss to the crowd, or waiting for someone to say "help" and give us their character concept?

As for the purpose of the thread, I think it's intended purpose is like the Costume Request Thread but for folks that need help with names rather than help creating/updating costumes for their character.

Though there are tonnes of helpful tips here too.

Oubli' got it.  My intent was for people to post -requests- for name suggestions based on theme/concept.

But looks like the people who want to help got ahead of the game and just started posting general advice and tips.

Now, if you want rather dramatic, poetic names... Names of the sort you'd find in wuxia fiction, or... well... attached to Exalted characters... Many, many moons ago my friend Voidstate came up with this:

Hate to be the buzzkill here, but giving characters names in languages you don't understand is pregnant with the possibility of going very wrong.  Also, Google Translate is utterly incompetent in Latin.  Please, folks, I'm right here.  I'd be happy if you run it by me first before committing to the Latin name of your supergroup.

 

That said, I'm tempted to look at Outrider_01's list  to figure out what are the worst possible names I can make using it.  "Challenge accepted".

Once upon a time I took to naming some of my gang after opera characters, for instance. There are some fun names to be had there, even if you aren't a particular fan of the music. (I am, so that just added an extra bit of fun for me. And it always made me grin when someone else recognized where Sarastro or Coppelius or Amneris' name came from. XD)  

 

Find an opera character who reminds you somehow of the character you're making, and have at it. "Figaro" was great for a flashy Sonic blaster with a high opinion of their own opinion. "Falstaff" was perfect for a big guy all about the Wine, Women and Song when busting bad guys was done. My "Rosenkavalier" was a handsome, young and slightly daft Broadsword/Shield scrap in formal dress and a domino mask...  There's a lot of inspiration to be had if you go looking for it.

 

 

 

+1. All of my new names are references to avant-garde classical pieces or obscure black metal bands or something else like that. I basically never have a problem with names being taken. People are way too busy running generic names through a thesaurus to even scratch the surface of these sorts of names.

I just came here to say, European black metal bands make great villain names.  I have Opeth Hellhammer and Deathspell Omega.  I might make a Kheldian named Ufomammutt.

By that logic though,  anything could be offensive though.  Don't give them that power.
