That's a big ask. He would have to accept that the reaction comes from insecurity and not mental superiority.

The quality of the forums would greatly improve if the maturity level of most posters advanced beyond that of pre-teens.

You expect far too much from human beings. Your first mistake is believing that they somehow have intelligence to begin with. Most humans are purely reactionary and tribalistic followers who are better at repeating the things they see and hear rather than giving actual thought to anything outside their own bubble. Rational thought is simply too complicated and requires too much energy to actually think. In short, it simply won't happen. Remember, humans are nothing more than evolved upright walking apes; don't expect much.

Haha someone is an optimist to the point of naivety. This sort of thing has been attempted on other forums in the past to great failure.

The responses won't be any less one note for having forced people to type them out. And you don't get to determine if they feel like replying or not, so maybe drop that particular hubris.

But...I like pizza with both, and with ham, bacon, onion, and bell and jalapeno peppers too. And Parmesan to make the cheese flavor moar pungent. Sweet, sour, salty, spicy and umami flavors locked in a post apocalyptic cage match to determine WHO RUNS PIZZA TOWN?!

Take away the reaction icons, I guaran-dam-tee you will start seeing a flood of /jranger replies, and probably a few others will be cooked up and instituted.  

Personally, I'd far rather keep the reaction icons, which at least eliminate that kind of chaff from the actual message streams.  You can always just flat out ignore the icons if you wish. There are no settings to ignore one-word text replies, or forum replies that are just images/meme's, etc.

 

Be careful what you wish for.

There’s a tipping point where one person’s “thoughtful” post becomes someone else’s homework. I’m not sure where that is but, as a secondary teacher of nearly 30 years, I can tell you the distance to that point gets shorter and shorter every year.:-)

 

(Also: one person’s in-depth, detailed discussion is another person’s “nails on a chalkboard” [i’m looking at you, student who talked only about K-Pop boy bands…every day…constantly…and wanted to do research projects on them…and hummed their songs…and-SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!]).

Sometimes I think I'm too cynical, and then I get a post like this to read.

 

Most people I find are just trying to do stuff they're used to and when forced out of it, react poorly.    Most tend toward good, but the exceptions seem to be louder.

I deal with a lot of terrible people nearly daily, but I find focusing on the helpful,  compassionate people is better for my overall mental health.   Granted, it's difficult when I get yelled at by someone who has a different idea on some aspect of rescue where I will have to say, emotions seem to rule a lot.

I also find having a calmer demeanor helps when working with animals, usually works with people too.
