Things can come in different shapes/sizes and can be repurposed from their original intent. Maybe this was Dr. Aeon's toaster and he started tinkering.

 

 

I do some bladesmithing on the side (less now than I used to), and found that at 2300° you could cook a frozen pizza in a forge in about 6-7 seconds. After about 15 seconds it's ignited and turns to ash. It took a couple tries to get it right, and I don't recommend blacksmithing while drinking.
